Protests appeared outside showrooms, some owners added anti-Musk bumper stickers to their cars, and the #TeslaTakedown and #TeslaTakeover campaigns spread to at least 100 cities by late February.
The reaction was tied to Elon Musk’s endorsement of Donald Trump, his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), support for controversial political figures overseas, and other highly divisive public activity. Critics began describing Musk’s politics as “toxic,” although that is a value judgment rather than an objective designation.

The backlash damaged Tesla’s brand and coincided with a sharp 2025 sales decline. But the latest delivery figures complicate any claim that the protests are still accelerating everywhere: Tesla reported a substantial global sales rebound in the second quarter of 2026.

Tesla was once widely associated with clean technology, innovation, and the transition away from gasoline-powered cars. Musk’s personal profile was always closely connected to the company, but his political activity made that association more difficult for some customers to separate.
#1 Best Overall
His endorsement of Trump and his work with DOGE moved him from being a polarizing technology executive to a prominent political participant. He also backed right-wing or far-right political actors in Europe and published public comments and gestures that generated further controversy.
That created an unusual problem for Tesla. A customer can reject a celebrity’s views without abandoning a product, but Musk is not merely a celebrity spokesperson. He is Tesla’s chief executive and its most recognizable public face. For some buyers, owning a Tesla began to feel like making a political statement whether they intended to or not.
What the Tesla protests looked like
The organized campaign was generally branded #TeslaTakedown or #TeslaTakeover. Demonstrators gathered outside Tesla showrooms and other company locations, often calling for Musk to lose influence over the automaker or for consumers to stop buying Tesla vehicles.
Some owners used bumper stickers to distinguish themselves from Musk. Others traded in their cars or publicly explained that they liked the vehicles but no longer wanted to be associated with the CEO.
Peaceful demonstrations should be separated from criminal incidents. Reports during the protest wave included vandalism, arson, gunfire, and attacks involving Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and charging equipment. Those incidents were not evidence that the entire protest movement organized or carried out violence. They were separate criminal acts that increased the danger around Tesla facilities and employees.

By April 2025, Tesla acknowledged the risk in a Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company said criticism of Tesla and its management had “incited protests,” with some incidents escalating to violence targeting its operations, products, and personnel. Tesla warned that negative perceptions could hurt its brand, sales, business, and ability to raise funds.
The 2025 sales slump
Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles in the first quarter of 2025, compared with 386,810 in the same quarter of 2024. That was a decline of about 13%.
The company delivered 384,122 vehicles in the second quarter of 2025, down 13% from 443,956 a year earlier. Those numbers made the political backlash look commercially significant, but they do not prove that protests alone caused the decline.
| Period | Deliveries | Year-over-year comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 2024 | 386,810 | — |
| Q1 2025 | 336,681 | Down about 13% |
| Q2 2024 | 443,956 | — |
| Q2 2025 | 384,122 | Down 13% |
| Q2 2026 | 480,126 | Up from Q2 2025 |
Other explanations were operating at the same time. Tesla had an aging model lineup, faced stronger competition, and experienced production disruption during the Model Y changeover. Some buyers may also have delayed purchases while waiting for the refreshed Model Y.
That combination matters. It is reasonable to say Musk’s politics contributed to a hostile brand environment and may have discouraged some buyers. It is not reasonable to assign the entire sales decline to the protests without separating the political effect from product-cycle and production factors.

How much did the brand suffer?
Brand measurements show that the damage was more than anecdotal. In the 2025 Axios Harris Poll 100, Tesla fell from eighth place in 2021 to 95th place. It ranked last in the poll’s character category, and the results showed a pronounced partisan divide: Republicans viewed Tesla more favorably than Democrats.

A peer-reviewed 2026 study, “Tesla Takedown: Brand Politicization and Partisan Consumerism in the Trump Era,” found that Democrats’ evaluations of Tesla became more negative after Musk’s endorsement of Trump and his early-administration political role, while Republican evaluations improved. The study supports the existence of a partisan brand effect. It does not show that politics alone determined Tesla’s sales.
One Yale-linked summary of a 2025 working paper estimated that Musk’s “partisan effect” may have cost Tesla between 1 million and 1.26 million U.S. vehicle sales from October 2022 through April 2025. That is a model-based estimate, not a Tesla accounting figure. Analysts quoted in the summary questioned the size of the estimate, so it should not be treated as settled fact.
Is the backlash still spreading fast?
The wording “spreading fast” best describes the protest surge in February through April 2025. During that period, demonstrations expanded across multiple countries, the campaigns gained visibility, and Tesla formally added protest-related brand and operational risks to its SEC filing.
The more current picture is mixed. Tesla reported 480,126 global deliveries in Q2 2026, including 467,762 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. It also produced 451,758 vehicles and deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage. Q2 2026 was the company’s second consecutive quarterly sales gain, according to reporting by The Washington Post.

That rebound does not mean the brand problem disappeared. Cox Automotive estimated that Tesla’s U.S. sales were still down about 20% year over year in that quarter. Tesla does not include regional delivery totals in its quarterly delivery release, so that U.S. figure is an outside estimate rather than a Tesla-reported number.
The latest figures therefore argue against describing the backlash as uniformly accelerating worldwide. They do support a narrower conclusion: Musk’s politics caused measurable brand deterioration, contributed to a difficult 2025 sales period, and left Tesla more politically polarizing than it was before. The company can still sell large numbers of cars, but it is doing so with a more divisive brand attached to them.
What this means for Tesla owners and buyers
- The car and the CEO are difficult to separate. Tesla’s corporate identity remains unusually dependent on Musk’s public image. Buyers who dislike his politics may still like the vehicles, but they cannot completely avoid the association.
- Political identity can influence resale and ownership decisions. A buyer may reject a Tesla because of the company’s image, while an existing owner may use a sticker or another public signal to distance the vehicle from Musk.
- Sales data needs context. A weak quarter can reflect brand damage, but also incentives, competition, production changes, model age, and customers waiting for a new version.
- A sales rebound does not erase reputational damage. Tesla’s Q2 2026 deliveries were much stronger than a year earlier, yet polling and U.S. estimates still indicate a weaker or more divided brand in important markets.
The bottom line on Tesla’s political backlash
Tesla’s backlash was real, organized, and commercially relevant. It spread rapidly in early 2025, produced protests at dealerships and other facilities, and forced Tesla to warn investors that negative perceptions could affect sales and financing.
But the strongest version of the claim—that Musk’s politics alone caused Tesla’s sales collapse or that the backlash is still rapidly expanding everywhere—is not supported by the available evidence. Tesla’s 2025 decline had several causes, and its global deliveries rebounded sharply in Q2 2026.
The durable problem is polarization. Musk’s political behavior has turned Tesla ownership into a more visible cultural and political choice, potentially shrinking the brand’s appeal among some environmentally minded or politically moderate buyers even as it improves the company’s standing with others.

FAQ
What started the Tesla backlash against Elon Musk?
The backlash accelerated in early 2025 after Musk endorsed Donald Trump, became involved in the Trump administration through DOGE, supported controversial right-wing political figures overseas, and made other divisive public statements and gestures.
Did Tesla protests cause the company’s 2025 sales decline?
They may have contributed, but the evidence does not establish that they were the sole cause. Tesla also faced an aging lineup, stronger competition, production disruption during the Model Y changeover, and buyers delaying purchases for the refreshed Model Y.
What were the #TeslaTakedown protests?
#TeslaTakedown and the related #TeslaTakeover labels were used for organized demonstrations and consumer activism targeting Tesla, its dealerships, and Musk’s influence. Peaceful protests should be distinguished from separately reported crimes such as vandalism, arson, gunfire, and attacks on Tesla property.
Are Tesla sales still falling because of the backlash?
Not globally according to Tesla’s latest reported figures. Tesla delivered 480,126 vehicles in Q2 2026, up from 384,122 in Q2 2025. However, outside estimates indicated that U.S. sales were still down about 20% year over year, and the brand remains politically polarized.
The Bottom Line
Tesla’s anti-Musk backlash spread quickly in 2025 and damaged the company’s reputation, but it was only one factor behind the sales slump. Tesla’s Q2 2026 global delivery rebound shows that the company can still sell vehicles at scale; the unresolved issue is whether Musk’s politics permanently narrowed the brand’s customer base.
