Tesla announced in April 2024 that it planned to cut more than 10% of its global workforce. The company cited cost reduction and productivity; the announcement came after a weak delivery quarter and amid a reported decline in U.S. buyer consideration. Those facts do not establish that Elon Musk alone caused Tesla’s sales weakness—or that he had alienated nearly every potential buyer.
What Tesla announced—and what the figure means
On April 15, 2024, Reuters reported that an internal memo from CEO Elon Musk announced planned layoffs affecting more than 10% of Tesla’s global workforce. That was an announced threshold, not a verified final count of employees dismissed. Reuters’ report on the announcement described the cuts as coming amid falling sales and an intensifying electric-vehicle price war.
Why Musk said Tesla was making cuts
Musk’s memo framed the layoffs as a cost and productivity measure. As quoted by Reuters, he wrote that “it is extremely important to look at every aspect of the company for cost reductions and increasing productivity.” That is the company’s stated rationale; the memo does not establish how many positions would ultimately be eliminated or how much the cuts would save.
What Tesla’s delivery figures showed
Tesla reported 386,810 vehicle deliveries worldwide in the first quarter of 2024. In its SEC-filed quarterly discussion, the company said combined cash deliveries of the Model 3 and Model Y were down by approximately 27,000 year over year. The figures indicate a weaker quarter, but deliveries alone do not identify why demand or output changed. Operational issues Tesla said contributed
Tesla said several operational factors partially contributed to the Model 3 and Model Y delivery decline: the early production ramp of the updated Model 3, factory shutdowns associated with shipping diversions in the Red Sea, and an arson attack at its Berlin-Brandenburg plant. These are Tesla’s stated explanations, not a quantified breakdown of how much each factor affected deliveries.
Did Musk’s public persona affect buyer interest?
Reuters reported that Caliber’s U.S. Tesla consideration score was 31% in February 2024, down from a high of 70% in November 2021. Caliber attributed part of the decline to Musk’s polarizing persona. This is a dated survey measure of consideration in the United States—not a count of people who bought or rejected a Tesla, and not proof that Musk was the sole cause of the change. What the evidence does—and does not—show
The layoff announcement, weak Q1 deliveries, operational disruptions, a competitive and price-pressured EV market, and the drop in buyer consideration all form relevant context. The available figures do not quantify their separate effects or demonstrate that Musk’s conduct caused Tesla’s delivery decline. And a 31% consideration score does not support the claim that “pretty much everyone” who might buy a Tesla had been alienated: it measures a specific U.S. survey result at a specific time, not the views of every prospective buyer.
