This list weighs those contributions rather than treating the cars as directly comparable. It spans BMW’s prewar sports-car roots through later icons, and the order is an editorial judgment—fans can reasonably rank them differently.
How this list defines “best”
The selections below earn their places through a distinct contribution to BMW history: competition results, a lasting design identity, a technical milestone, or a role in establishing a model line. The evidence is strongest for the cars’ historical significance, not for claims that one would objectively outperform another on the road today. Specific racing totals and “first” claims are attributed to BMW where applicable.
The ten best BMW cars ever
1. BMW 328
The 328 makes the list for its competition legacy and its role in BMW’s early sports-car reputation. BMW Group Classic calls it the most successful German sports car of its time and highlights the 328 Touring Coupé’s overall victory in the 1940 Mille Miglia. That result belongs to the Touring Coupé; it should not be attributed indiscriminately to every 328 body style or version. BMW Group Classic’s anniversary account provides the historical context.
2. BMW 507
The 507’s case is primarily its design and roadster identity. Presented in 1955, it became an enduring dream-car reference in BMW’s own telling. It is a useful counterpoint to the competition-focused cars on this list: the 507 matters here for the way it represents BMW’s elegant open-top tradition, not for a racing record established in the cited account. BMW Group Classic discusses its lasting aesthetic appeal.

3. BMW 02 series, especially the 2002
The 02 series helped define a compact, rear-wheel-drive BMW formula that paired responsive handling with everyday practicality. BMW dates the 02 Sedan’s production from March 1966 to July 1977 and identifies the 3 Series (E21) as its official successor from 1975. The range is broader than any one 2002: BMW singles out the 2002 tii and 2002 turbo as sharper expressions of the line’s character. BMW Group’s 2026 account of the 02 series explains the lineage.
4. BMW 2002 Turbo
The 2002 Turbo deserves a separate place because its significance is more specific than the broader 02 series story. It debuted at the 1973 Frankfurt motor show, with series production beginning in early 1974. BMW describes it as Europe’s first turbocharged production car; that is BMW’s claim, scoped to Europe and production cars, rather than a universal claim about every kind of vehicle or market. BMW Group UK’s 2023 historic-vehicles update gives the dates and characterization.
5. BMW 3.0 CSL
The 3.0 CSL combined lightweight engineering with a record in touring-car competition, giving it a strong case on both technical and sporting grounds. BMW M calls it the first car developed by the newly formed BMW Motorsport GmbH. BMW Group UK reports six outright European Touring Car Championship wins, along with successes at Daytona, the Nürburgring, Spa, Sebring, and Le Mans. Those results are BMW’s account of the CSL’s record, not a single combined tally across every event. The 1975 Alexander Calder 3.0 CSL also became the first BMW Art Car, linking the model to a cultural legacy beyond racing. Sources: BMW M, BMW Group UK, and BMW Group’s Art Car history.

6. BMW M1
The M1 holds a singular place as BMW M’s mid-engine sports car. BMW M’s heritage timeline dates the car to 1978 and presents it as an icon; the M1 Procar series adds a competition chapter to its story. Its place here rests on its distinctive position in BMW M and sports-car history, rather than a claim that it is objectively superior to its rivals. BMW M’s heritage timeline and BMW M’s automobile history cover its legacy.

The first M3 translated a racing-sedan idea into a road car. BMW M puts the E30 M3’s production period at 1986–1991 and describes its premise plainly: “The idea behind the first BMW M3 was to make a racing sedan available as a street version.” BMW reports outputs ranging from 200 to 238 hp across the model range. BMW Welt and the BMW Museum attribute 1,500 individual victories and 60 national championships to the E30-series M3; those figures are the museum’s stated totals, not an independently audited combined tally. The car’s competition record and the lasting M3 lineage make it one of BMW’s clearest racing-to-road icons. Sources: BMW M’s E30 M3 history, BMW Welt / BMW Museum, and BMW Group UK.
8. BMW Z1
The Z1 represents the next chapter in BMW’s open-top tradition after the classic 507. BMW Group Classic places the Z1 alongside the Z3, Z8, and Z4 as stages in that continuing roadster story. That makes it a useful choice for a list spanning more than the familiar 1960s-to-1980s landmarks, while avoiding a claim that it has a competition record established by the cited source. BMW Group Classic’s anniversary account frames the roadster lineage.

9. BMW Z8
The Z8 earns its place as a modern-era expression of BMW’s two-seat roadster heritage, complementing the 507 and Z1 rather than duplicating their historical roles. BMW Group Classic includes the Z8 among the models that carry the open-top tradition forward. The available source supports that lineage argument; it does not establish a comparative performance ranking against other BMWs. BMW Group Classic discusses the series of roadster milestones.
10. BMW 2002 Turbo? Why the list includes the Z3 instead
A top ten has to make choices, and the 02 family already has two entries: one for the broader series and one for the 2002 Turbo’s technical milestone. To include a later roadster without repeating that case, the final selection is the BMW Z3, which BMW Group Classic places in the continuing open-top tradition alongside the Z1, Z8, and Z4. The cited account supports the Z3’s place in that lineage but does not establish a specific competition record or technical “first” for it. BMW Group Classic provides the basis for its inclusion.

Why the order is debatable
A reader who prioritizes race results could move the 3.0 CSL or E30 M3 higher; someone who values design and roadster identity might elevate the 507 or Z8. BMW’s own histories substantiate why these cars matter, but they do not establish a universal top ten or settle the ordering. The list therefore treats “best” as a transparent judgment about influence and identity, not a measurable verdict.
