The Teal Tail Feather MINI 8.4 was a compact, assemble-yourself camper kit designed to turn a separate 4 × 8 ft utility trailer into a low-profile sleeping space for two. New Atlas reported a US$2,500 launch-era kit price in July 2014, plus freight; that price did not include the trailer and is not a current offer. The MINI was a simple shelter, not a fully equipped camper.
What the Tail Feather MINI 8.4 was
Teal International’s MINI 8.4 adapted the company’s modular Tail Feather concept to a standard 4 × 8 ft (1.2 × 2.4 m) utility trailer. Wood wall panels and an ABS roof attached to the trailer’s side rails. For towing, the hinged walls and clamshell roof folded down; at camp, they opened into an enclosed sleeping area. New Atlas described the design in its July 7, 2014 report, attributing product details to Teal.
The camper kit itself weighed 175 lb (79 kg), according to that 2014 report. It comprised about a dozen pieces, none weighing more than 35 lb (16 kg), which could be nested together for storage after disassembly. The opened interior offered roughly 4.5 ft (1.4 m) of headroom, with the actual clearance depending on the trailer’s side-rail height. A screen in the door and two 8-inch roof vents provided ventilation.
What the launch price included—and left out
New Atlas reported a 2014 price of US$2,500 plus freight for the MINI kit. The utility trailer was an additional purchase: Teal’s reported estimate for a basic trailer at the time was US$250–700. Those are historical figures, not current prices or evidence that the product can still be ordered. The report also gave an expected 30–45-day delivery window for hand-built orders, with a full production run planned later; that was a launch-era expectation, not a present delivery estimate.

Teal’s reported typical combined weight for the camper and trailer was under 500 lb (227 kg). That figure describes the company’s typical configuration as reported in 2014, not every trailer, add-on, or loaded setup. The trailer’s own capacity and the tow vehicle’s limits still matter when assessing a real combination.
A place to sleep, not a complete camper
The MINI was deliberately pared back. Unlike the original Tail Feather, the MINI omitted the dinette and sink. Its interior walls were bare, and owners could stain, paint, panel, or insulate them. It could carry gear as well as provide a sleeping enclosure, although its shorter body limited cargo height compared with the full-size Tail Feather.

Teal offered an optional convertible lounge seat/bed platform. The 2014 report also described using an air mattress or sleeping bags directly on the floor. Those arrangements were optional or separately sourced; they were not included sleeping equipment in the base kit. Cooking gear and other amenities likewise had to be handled separately.
What to weigh before comparing it with other camping setups
The MINI’s appeal was a small, fold-down shelter that used a utility trailer rather than a dedicated camper chassis. Whether that trade-off made sense depended on what the owner already had and how they camped.

- Minimal amenities: There was no sink or dinette in the MINI configuration described by New Atlas; sleeping and cooking equipment required separate planning.
- Weight figures need context: The 175 lb specification was for the kit, while the under-500-lb figure was Teal’s reported typical combined camper-and-trailer weight. Neither should be treated as the loaded weight of every setup.
- Setup and storage: The modular panels were designed to come apart and nest, but owners had to assemble and disassemble the structure rather than simply use a fixed, fully outfitted camper.
The available report documents the MINI’s 2014 design and specifications; it does not provide a side-by-side test against tents, roof tents, or current small campers. Those alternatives are best compared by actual usable headroom, setup effort, storage, sleeping capacity, included equipment, tow-platform needs, and loaded weight—not by the kit weight alone.

Current availability, a successor model, present-day pricing, and replacement-parts support are not established by the available reporting. A New Atlas reader comment dated September 2, 2015 quoted a Teal notice saying campers and shelters would no longer be available for purchase because the company’s production capacity was committed to an exclusive order. Because that information appears in a reader comment quoting a company notice, it should be treated as a reported historical availability update—not proof of the company’s current status or of any present resale market.

Accordingly, the US$2,500 figure is useful as a record of the MINI’s launch-era price, not as a shopping price. Anyone considering a used example would need to verify the unit’s condition, completeness, compatible trailer, and any parts or assembly documentation directly with its seller.
