The Autavia returned as a full TAG Heuer collection in 2019, but the hands-on review covered here is specifically the three-hand Autavia Isograph—not the later flyback chronographs. Reviewer Dan-Andrei’s 2019 account describes a 42 mm watch with strong legibility and a surprisingly comfortable fit for him, alongside a proprietary quick-change strap system. Its movement, size and function should not be confused with those of later Autavia references.
What “Autavia returns” means
Autavia began as a dashboard timer in 1933; its name combines “Automobile” and “Aviation.” In 1962, Jack Heuer recreated it as a wristwatch chronograph. TAG Heuer’s official history says the wristwatch used a hand-wound Valjoux 72 and a rotating bezel. The collection’s return as a full line came in 2019, not 1962: TAG Heuer introduced seven COSC-certified Calibre 5 models, five in steel and two in bronze. In 2022, the brand marked Autavia’s 60th anniversary with three further watches. These are separate milestones, not one relaunch. TAG Heuer’s history of the Autavia and its US collection page describe that evolution.
This review focuses on the 2019 three-hand Isograph family, which was available with blue, black or grey dials. It is distinct from later Autavia chronographs, including flyback models.
What the 2019 Isograph offers
Watch I Love’s 19 September 2019 hands-on review lists a 42 mm stainless-steel case, automatic Calibre 5 Isograph movement with a carbon-composite hairspring, chronometer certification and a 38-hour power reserve. It also lists a date at six, bidirectional bezel and water resistance of 100 m. These specifications describe the Isograph reviewed, not every watch carrying the Autavia name. How it wears, according to the reviewer
Although the reviewer generally preferred watches in the 39–41 mm range, he found the 42 mm Isograph comfortable on his wrist. He credited the slightly curved lugs in part for the fit. That is a useful counterpoint to the diameter alone, but it cannot establish how the case will sit on another wrist: lug shape and personal fit matter, and the review does not provide a wrist measurement.

Straps and bracelet options
The hands-on review describes the strap-and-bracelet change system as proprietary and quick to use. TAG Heuer’s collection page names calfskin leather, rubber NATO and stainless-steel bracelet options for the interchangeable system. That does not establish compatibility with third-party straps; check fit against the exact reference before buying an alternative.
Don’t mix the Isograph with later flyback specifications
A later example, reference CBE5150.FC8280, is a flyback chronograph, not the three-hand Isograph. TAG Heuer lists it with an in-house automatic Calibre HEUER02 COSC Flyback movement, an 80-hour power reserve, a 42 mm diameter, 15.68 mm thickness, 21 mm lug distance and 100 m water resistance. The brand’s page marks this reference discontinued. Its 80-hour reserve and thickness do not apply to the 2019 Isograph. TAG Heuer’s CBE5150.FC8280 product page gives the reference-specific details.
| Model or milestone | Function and movement | Published specifications | Status or context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 Autavia Isograph | Three-hand automatic; Calibre 5 Isograph, chronometer-certified | 42 mm; 38-hour reserve; 100 m water resistance (Watch I Love, 2019) | Full-collection return; three dial colors reported in the hands-on review |
| CBE5150.FC8280 | Automatic flyback chronograph; Calibre HEUER02 COSC Flyback | 42 mm diameter; 15.68 mm thick; 21 mm lug distance; 80-hour reserve; 100 m water resistance (TAG Heuer product page, accessed 2026) | TAG Heuer marks this reference discontinued |
| 2022 60th-anniversary releases | Three new Autavia watches; the cited history describes design features rather than a single shared movement specification | Not stated in the cited history | Anniversary milestone, separate from the 2019 full-collection return |
What the return gets right—and what to check
The 2019 Isograph makes Autavia a three-hand watch as well as a chronograph lineage. That choice prompted debate among enthusiasts who felt Autavia should remain a chronograph, a point noted in the hands-on review. The watch’s appeal instead rests on its legible dial, rotating bezel, date and everyday-oriented 100 m water-resistance rating, as reported for this model.
Before comparing or buying an Autavia, identify the exact reference. Confirm whether it is a three-hand watch or chronograph, then compare movement, reserve, case dimensions, material, bezel, dial, lume, strap configuration and water resistance for that reference. TAG Heuer’s product pages can change, and the cited flyback page is discontinued; neither current stock nor current price is established here.
