Suzuki unveiled it alongside the supermoto DR-Z4SM at EICMA on November 5, 2024. The “15 years” in the original headline should be treated as approximate: Suzuki says the DR-Z400S was introduced in 2000, and the available dates do not establish a precise 15-year model-cycle interval.
When did Suzuki introduce the new DR-Z4S?
Suzuki introduced the DR-Z4S and the related DR-Z4SM at EICMA in Milan on November 5, 2024. The DR-Z4S is the dual-sport; the DR-Z4SM is the supermoto variant. Suzuki’s Japanese announcement, dated October 1, 2025, says sales in Japan began October 8, 2025. Meanwhile, Suzuki’s US site presents the motorcycles as 2027 models, so model-year labels and launch timing depend on market. Suzuki’s global announcement and Japanese release provide the respective dates.
Suzuki’s US model material says the DR-Z400S was introduced in 2000. That supports describing the DR-Z4S as a substantial update to a long-running lineage, but not treating “15 years” as a verified interval between model generations. Suzuki’s DR-Z400S page provides that company history.
What changed on the DR-Z4S?
Engine and throttle
The DR-Z4S retains a 398cc single-cylinder engine, redesigned for the new model. The old DR-Z400S used a carburetor; the new bike adds electronic fuel injection and a ride-by-wire throttle. Suzuki says its engine changes reduce mechanical loss by up to 20% versus the prior-generation DR-Z400S. That is a manufacturer engineering claim, not an independently measured result, and it should not be read as a fuel-economy or power-improvement figure.
#1 Best Overall
- Clean tail for the new DR-Z: Trims the bulky stock rear fender into a short, streamlined tail with your plate and factory lights still in plain view. Made for the 2025 and newer Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM only. It will not fit the older DR-Z400.
- Bolts on in your garage: Reuses your factory bolts, isolation bushings and lights. No drilling, no cutting, no soldering and no wiring changes. Basic hand tools, and it's fully reversible if you ever want the stock fender back.
- Bends instead of breaks: Made from an industrial grade flexible polymer. Drop the bike or catch a log and it flexes and springs back instead of cracking like plastic or bending like metal. Holds up to trail vibration.
- Tested the hard way: We tried to tear it in half with pliers, hung a 190 lb rider from the installed tail, ran it over with a car, and dropped our own DR-Z4S more times than we can count. Frame plugs included.
- Rider made, and we replace it if you break it: Designed and made in the USA by a retired firefighter who rides his DR-Z4S on the trail every week. If it ever breaks, send us a photo and cover shipping, and we'll send you a new one.
Frame, suspension and running gear
Suzuki specifies an all-new twin-spar steel frame and aluminum subframe. The DR-Z4S has adjustable KYB suspension, a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, fitted with IRC GP-410 dual-purpose tube-type tires. Its equipment also includes LED lighting, an LCD instrument panel and electric starting. Suzuki describes the design as retaining the DR-Z400S’s dual-sport character while adding new technology; the published material does not establish independent handling or comfort comparisons. Suzuki’s technical page lists the model’s equipment and systems.
Rider aids
Suzuki’s S.I.R.S. (Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) includes three drive modes, traction control with a Gravel mode, and switchable ABS. Riders can switch ABS off at the rear wheel or at both wheels. These are selectable systems, not a substitute for choosing tires, speed and riding technique appropriate to the surface.

- FITMENT: The crash bar compatible with 2025 2026 Suzuki DR-Z 4S/ DR-Z 4SM. [ !!Not compatible with the factory skid plate]
- ENHANCES PROTECTION: Protect vulnerable areas such as the engine and frame, acting as a barrier to absorb impact and minimize damage to critical components in the event of a fall or collision
- PREMIUM CRAFTSMANSHIP: Satin-black powder-coated steel that is scratch-resistant, rust-proof, and corrosion-resistant. Suitable for long-term use in all weather conditions, maintaining its clean appearance and structural integrity
- EFFORTLESS INSTALLATION : Bolts directly for the DR-Z 4S frame after assembly, no drilling, cutting, welding or other modifications required. It will not interfere with any components, including the engine, pedals, or exhaust system.
- MATERIAL: Steel pipe 25×2 mm wall thickness, sheet metal 6.0 mm, can withstand enormous forces or loads without breaking or deforming. When reversing or skidding, the crash bar makes contact with the ground first, significantly reducing repair costs
Published dimensions
Suzuki lists a 920 mm (36.2 in) seat height, 151 kg (333 lb) curb mass and an 8.7 L (2.3 US gal) fuel tank for the DR-Z4S. The company’s 2025 DR-Z400S page lists a 935 mm (36.8 in) seat height, making the stated difference 15 mm. Seat height alone does not determine whether a motorcycle will fit a particular rider, and the listed curb mass is not an independent weighing.
DR-Z4S versus DR-Z400S: how to compare them
The clearest documented changes are the fuel system and throttle, the frame and subframe, the electronic rider aids, and the lower published seat height. Both models are described with 398cc displacement. Specifications and equipment establish what changed on paper; the manufacturer material cited here does not supply independent comparative data for power, real-world fuel economy, comfort, reliability or overall superiority.

If you are deciding between a new DR-Z4S and a used DR-Z400S, compare the actual motorcycles rather than assuming either one is automatically the better buy. For a used bike, condition and modifications can matter as much as its age or odometer reading.
- Fuel and controls: the DR-Z4S has electronic fuel injection and ride-by-wire; check the exact specification of the older motorcycle you are considering.
- Chassis and suspension: compare the new twin-spar frame and adjustable KYB suspension with the older bike’s condition, maintenance history and any suspension changes.
- Equipment: decide whether the new model’s drive modes, traction control and switchable ABS are useful for your riding.
- Fit and load: consider seat height and curb mass alongside your reach, intended luggage and the surfaces you ride.
- Total cost: compare the new bike’s local out-the-door quote with the used bike’s price plus any maintenance, repairs or accessories it needs.
Is the DR-Z4S+ worth the extra cost?
On Suzuki’s US site, the 2027 DR-Z4S has a base MSRP of $7,999 and the DR-Z4S+ has a base MSRP of $8,299—a $300 difference in listed base price. The Plus trim adds a rugged aluminum skid plate, handguards, and front and rear brake rotor guards as standard equipment. Suzuki’s 2027 DR-Z4S listing and DR-Z4S+ listing show the US pricing and equipment.

Whether the upgrade is worthwhile depends on whether those are accessories you would buy for the standard bike and what they cost for your intended model year. Check exact fitment before buying separate parts; the published trim equipment does not establish compatibility for every older DR-Z.

- 【SECURE 3-SCREW LOCKING】: Three M3 screws firmly secure the original kickstand foot inside the enlarger, helping prevent loosening, shifting and unwanted movement during daily use.
For a separate market reference, Suzuki’s Japanese release dated October 1, 2025 lists the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM at ¥1,199,000 including Japan’s 10% consumption tax, with sales starting October 8, 2025. That Japan-specific price is not directly comparable to US MSRP because the markets and included charges differ.
