A generic car OBD-II reader is not automatically compatible with a BMW motorcycle. Confirm the exact model and function in the tool maker’s current support list before buying or connecting equipment.
How BMW motorcycle diagnostics fit together
Think of diagnostics as a compatibility chain, not a single plug-in standard. Identify the motorcycle and its socket first; then verify that the interface works with your chosen software, that the bike’s control unit is supported, and that the software offers the specific function you need.
- Motorcycle and socket: Check the model, model year, market and physical diagnostic connector. BMW motorcycles may have a round 10-pin connector or a 16-pin socket; older systems may use a different method.
- Interface and app: Make sure the adapter is explicitly supported by the diagnostic app or platform. A connector that fits is not proof that the electronics communicate correctly.
- Control unit and task: Check support for the system you intend to access—such as engine or ABS—and the action you want to perform. Reading fault codes, clearing them, viewing live values and carrying out a service reset are distinct capabilities.
Vendor compatibility pages are the best available guide, but a general coverage statement is not a guarantee that every module or function works on every bike.
MotoScan: Android app and compatible interfaces
MotoScan describes itself as an Android app for BMW motorcycle diagnostics. Its accessory guidance recommends the UniCarScan UCSI-2000, OBDLink LX and OBDLink MX+. It warns that many other ELM327-compatible adapters work only with limitations and does not recommend Wi-Fi-connected adapters. Check its required accessories guidance before choosing an interface.

OBDLink separately lists the LX for use with MotoScan on BMW motorcycles. That does not mean the OBDLink app included with the adapter is a BMW motorcycle diagnostic app: OBDLink says its app is for OBD-II-compliant cars and light trucks. The adapter’s use with MotoScan and the OBDLink app’s vehicle coverage are separate compatibility questions. See OBDLink’s motorcycle support page.
Do you need a 10-pin adapter?
If your motorcycle has the older round 10-pin diagnostic socket, you may need a 10-pin-to-16-pin adapter cable to connect a 16-pin interface. MotoScan’s accessories page describes this need for relevant pre-2017, non-Euro 4 motorcycles with the older connector. Its FAQ gives a broader year-based summary: BMW motorcycles through 2016 need the cable, while 2017-model-year motorcycles use a 16-pin OBD-II socket.
Those summaries are not interchangeable fitment guarantees. Check the actual socket on your bike and verify it against MotoScan’s current accessory guidance and motorcycle support listing. Many motorcycles with a 16-pin socket do not need the 10-pin adapter. See the MotoScan adapter FAQ.
Check model and module support
MotoScan’s general compatibility page says it supports BMW models from around 1998 onward when they have a round 10-pin connector or a 16-pin OBD-2 socket. It also notes that some older motorcycles use blink-code diagnosis and that some older FTE ABS modules have limitations. A separate supported BMW motorcycles list names series and modules but warns that the list may be incomplete. Use both the compatibility notes, updated September 26, 2025, and the current list to check your particular bike and required function.

GS-911: versions, connections and function limits
GS-911 offers versions for motorcycles with round 10-pin and 16-pin diagnostic sockets, with cables available to adapt between connector types. Its product materials describe Wi-Fi versions that connect by Wi-Fi or USB and a USB version with more limited connectivity. Confirm the current device variants and supported motorcycle list in the GS-911 comparison and support page.
The vendor distinguishes emergency functions from service functionality. For the Enthusiast version, service functions are limited to 10 motorcycles identified by VIN; the vendor says emergency functions are not subject to that limit. Examples of emergency functions include reading ECU information, reading and clearing fault codes, and viewing real-time values. Check the GS-911 functionality details and live comparison for the exact version and operation you need.

Choosing between MotoScan and GS-911
Neither product can be declared a universal winner from the available compatibility information. Compare them against your bike and intended job:
- Exact fit: Match model, year, region, connector and supported control modules against each vendor’s current list.
- Required operation: Verify whether you need ECU identification, fault-code reading or clearing, live data, a service reminder reset or another model-specific service action.
- Interface and cable: Confirm the interface is supported by the software and whether the bike requires a connector adapter.
- Connection and device: MotoScan is Android-based. GS-911 connection options depend on the version.
- Use pattern: Consider whether you need occasional owner checks, roadside emergency diagnostics or repeated workshop service work, and check any version-specific limits on service functions.
For MotoScan, the recommended interfaces include UniCarScan UCSI-2000, OBDLink LX and OBDLink MX+. For GS-911, choose among the currently supported versions only after checking the connector and feature chart. In either case, verify the specific control unit and action rather than inferring full support from a device’s connector or brand.

A diagnostic reader can help identify or monitor systems it supports; it does not replace factory diagnosis, repair instructions or safety-critical service. BMW Motorrad owner manuals are model-specific. In a malfunction context, the BMW Motorrad owner manual reviewed refers to the diagnostic connector and recommends arranging a BMW Service appointment. Follow the manual for your motorcycle, and use a qualified workshop if a fault affects safe operation or the required procedure is outside your tool’s supported functions.
