Suzuki introduced the GSX1300R in 1998 and began selling it in Europe and North America in 1999 as a powerful road-going sport motorcycle—not a track-only bike. Suzuki’s own history describes its handling as nimble.
Which motorcycle does the title refer to?
It is the first-generation Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa. Suzuki unveiled the model at Intermot in 1998, then brought it to European and North American markets for the 1999 sales year, according to the company’s 2023 25th-anniversary announcement.

The Hayabusa arrived amid a contest among high-performance motorcycles to claim the fastest-production-bike title. Suzuki’s company history says that the Hayabusa was recognized almost immediately as “the world’s fastest production motorcycle.” That is Suzuki’s account of its place in the contest, not an independent test result. The available sources do not establish a precise independently measured top speed for the unrestricted 1999 model.
What made the 1999 Hayabusa so fast?
Suzuki’s 1999 export-model archive lists a 1,298 cm³ liquid-cooled inline-four producing 175 PS at 9,800 rpm and 138.2 Nm of torque at 7,000 rpm. Those are manufacturer specifications for that model, not independent measurements.

The design was meant to unite high performance with road use. Suzuki’s digital archive calls the concept “The Ultimate Sport Bike,” and presents the Hayabusa as a road-going flagship. Its streamlined bodywork and substantial engine suited the high-speed ambitions of the period; the sources do not provide a controlled comparison that quantifies the benefit of any individual design feature.
Was the first Hayabusa really hard to handle?
The assertion that “nobody could handle” it goes beyond what the cited evidence supports. Suzuki’s own history describes the bike as nimble-handling, while the archived specification lists a dry weight of 215 kg. That weight is a manufacturer figure for the 1999 export model; it does not, by itself, establish how manageable the motorcycle felt in real-world riding.

The available sources contain no period test or named rider account demonstrating that the Hayabusa was uncontrollable, or that riders generally could not manage it. Its speed and power made it an exceptionally serious performance motorcycle, but that is not proof of a universal handling problem. The title’s wording is best read as provocative shorthand, not a documented consensus.

What changed after the Hayabusa’s arrival?
The National Motor Museum in the UK says manufacturers adopted a voluntary agreement limiting top speed to 300 km/h (186 mph) starting in 2000. This was a reported industry agreement, not a law. It helps explain why the late-1990s speed contest is often discussed as a distinct period, but it does not supply a verified top-speed figure for the original Hayabusa.
