Bike2 was presented in 2016 as a series-hybrid drive for electric bicycles: the rider pedals a generator, and an electric motor drives the wheel. That differs from a conventional chain-drive e-bike, where the rider’s pedal force reaches the wheel mechanically. What is Bike2?
Bike2 is an electric-bike powertrain developed by Bike2 ApS, described in a 2016 EE Times interview with co-founder Nils Sveje. The article characterizes it as a series hybrid, a term for a drivetrain in which a mechanical input generates electricity that then powers a motor. In Bike2’s bicycle application, the rider’s pedaling is converted into electrical power for the drive motor rather than being transmitted to the wheel through a conventional chain.

EE Times framed the architecture as relevant beyond bicycles, noting that series-hybrid powertrains also appear in boats and aircraft. Its broader examples—including renewable-energy combinations and small flying machines—were potential applications, not evidence of deployed Bike2 products in those fields.
How does a series-hybrid e-bike work?
- The rider pedals. Instead of driving the rear wheel directly through a chain, pedaling supplies mechanical input to the system.
- A generator converts that input into electricity.
- An electric motor turns the wheel. The motor, rather than the rider’s chain, provides the wheel’s propulsion.
This electrically mediated path distinguishes the concept from both a conventional chain-drive e-bike and a typical hub-motor e-bike, where the rider still pedals through a mechanical drivetrain while a motor adds assistance. The 2016 account explains the architecture but does not provide enough technical detail to establish its exact components or how the rider controls the motor’s response.

The article’s suggestion that standardizing parts across vehicles might reduce costs is an expectation, not a reported cost reduction. Likewise, its idea that the drive could appeal to less-fit riders or make new bicycle types possible is not backed by user testing or production data in that account.
Is Bike2 more efficient than a chain drive?
The available published account does not establish that. A series hybrid converts mechanical energy into electricity and then back into motion at the wheel, but without measured losses for the generator, electrical system, and motor—and a directly comparable chain-drive test—there is no sound basis for ranking the systems’ efficiency. EE Times published no controlled efficiency results, so claims that Bike2 is more or less efficient would go beyond the evidence.

Can you buy a Bike2 system today?
The 2016 EE Times account does not establish present-day availability, production, a retail channel, or a Bike2-compatible electric bike conversion kit. It discusses potential licensing if the company had strong patents, but does not verify an active licensing program, patent portfolio, or route to contact the company. Treat Bike2 as a described powertrain concept unless a current manufacturer source confirms a product and its specifications.
What the 2016 article does—and does not—show
EE Times’s account is useful for understanding the concept and its proposed applications, but it is an interview published on June 3, 2016, not a current product specification or independent test. The article’s reference to “150 million people” was editorial commentary about the scale of e-bike adoption in Europe or the Americas, not a sourced market measurement. It should not be read as a measured market size or forecast.
