But the available evidence supports five examples—not a defensible top 10—and a vehicle’s maximum rating does not mean every trim can tow that much. This comparison uses a clear price rule: the listed starting MSRP plus any destination or delivery charge stated by the manufacturer must be below $50,000, before taxes, dealer fees and optional equipment.
Which SUV under $50,000 can tow the most?
Among these verified 2026 models, the Toyota 4Runner leads with a manufacturer-published maximum of 6,000 pounds. The Honda Passport follows at 5,000 pounds. These are maximum ratings, not guarantees for every trim or loading condition; consult the exact vehicle’s owner’s manual and equipment details before towing.
The title asks for a top 10, but the available manufacturer information establishes only five useful examples. Rather than fill the remaining places with unsupported ratings, this guide compares those five and identifies the limits of the price and towing figures.
How the five verified SUVs compare
Prices below follow the stated rule where the manufacturer provides the relevant charge. “Before destination” means the listed MSRP does not include that charge; the model may still fit the cap on the stated figures, but taxes, dealer fees, options and transaction pricing can change the final cost.

What the $50,000 price limit means
A price cap can mean base MSRP, MSRP plus destination, or the final out-the-door price. The comparison above uses MSRP plus the published destination or delivery charge when one is provided; it does not claim these vehicles will cost less than $50,000 after taxes, dealer fees or optional equipment.
The Honda Passport TrailSport illustrates why that distinction matters: its $48,450 MSRP plus the stated $1,450 destination charge totals $49,900, leaving only $100 below a pre-tax sticker ceiling. Honda’s listed TrailSport Elite price is already above $50,000 before destination. Toyota likewise lists $1,450 in delivery processing and handling in addition to the 4Runner’s $41,570 MSRP. Confirm current pricing, the window sticker and dealer charges for the specific vehicle you are considering.

How to choose for the trailer you actually tow
Start with the trailer’s loaded weight, then check the vehicle-specific limits in the owner’s manual—not just the headline maximum tow rating. Passengers and cargo use payload capacity, while tongue weight also counts against the vehicle’s available payload. Trailer brakes, hitch equipment and configuration can affect what is allowed or required.
- For the highest verified maximum: the 4Runner leads this comparison at 6,000 pounds, subject to its exact configuration and manual.
- For a 5,000-pound rating near the cap: the Passport TrailSport’s stated MSRP plus destination is $49,900 before other charges; an RTL Towing trim is listed with an integrated Class III hitch.
- For a 3,500-pound rating at a lower listed price: Subaru lists the Outback Wilderness at $41,710, while Mazda’s rating applies to CX-50 Turbo models properly equipped with Mazda genuine towing accessories.
- For occasional lighter towing: Chevrolet lists the Equinox at up to 1,500 pounds; compare that limit with the trailer’s loaded weight and the vehicle’s manual.
Why this is not a definitive top 10
The verified manufacturer figures support five examples, not a complete ranking of ten SUVs. A reliable top 10 would require comparable official 2026 data for additional eligible vehicles, including trim-specific prices, destination charges, towing equipment and maximum ratings. The five listed here should not be read as a ranked top five across the full market.
