Yes—but the confirmed plans are Japan-focused, and they do not yet establish a U.S. WRX STI launch. Subaru says three manual-transmission models are in development for delivery by 2027, including a five-door hatchback developed from its Performance-B STI concept. Separately, the company announced a limited Japanese-market WRX STI Sport♯ with sales planned around spring 2026. Those plans are not proof of current dealer availability or deliveries.
What Subaru has confirmed about future STI models
Subaru’s Japan WRX S4 page describes three manual-transmission vehicles in development, with delivery planned by 2027: a WRX with a TY85 transmission, a BRZ complete car based on the STI Sport TYPE RA, and a five-door hatchback. Subaru identifies the hatchback as the production version of the Performance-B STI concept. The page does not provide final specifications, all final model names, prices, or export plans. That is a concrete development program, but “in development” and “planned by 2027” are not the same as a confirmed showroom date. Nor do Japanese product plans establish when—or whether—the vehicles will be offered in the United States.
Performance-B and Performance-E point to different futures
Performance-B: the combustion-based hatchback
Subaru introduced the Performance-B at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show as an internal-combustion concept built around the company’s horizontally opposed engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Subaru now says the five-door hatchback in its development program is the production version of that concept. It has not published final production power, dimensions, equipment, or a retail name. Performance-E: an electric concept, not a production announcement
Performance-E is separate from the hatchback program. Subaru Corporation described it as “A battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept model that represents the future of the Performance Scene, spearheading Subaru’s new generation.” That is concept language; the cited announcement does not say Performance-E is entering production. What the WRX STI Sport♯ announcement means
In January 2026, Subaru announced a prototype WRX STI Sport♯ as a Japanese-market STI complete car, pairing a turbocharged boxer engine with Symmetrical AWD and a six-speed manual. Subaru said limited sales were planned around spring 2026 in Japan. Its published 275 PS and 350 N·m figures are prototype development targets, not final certified production specifications. Subaru also listed the WRX STI Sport♯ among vehicles displayed at Tokyo Auto Salon, held January 9–11, 2026, in Chiba, Japan. The cited announcements establish the prototype and sales plan, but do not establish that retail deliveries occurred or that cars are currently in stock. Check Subaru Japan or a local dealer for present availability rather than treating the earlier plan as proof of sale. Does this mean a WRX STI is returning in the United States?
Not on the evidence Subaru has published in the cited sources. Subaru of America said in March 2022 that it would not offer the anticipated internal-combustion WRX STI on the then-current platform, citing electrification, emissions, and fuel-economy requirements. The company also said it would look to incorporate STI’s essence into next-generation vehicles. For the U.S. 2026 lineup, Subaru lists the WRX at 271 horsepower and describes the WRX tS as having features tuned by STI engineers. The tS is a WRX trim with STI-engineered equipment, not a model Subaru identifies as a WRX STI. The 271-horsepower figure applies to the U.S. 2026 WRX, not to the developing hatchback. The distinction matters: a concept, a production vehicle in development, a prototype with planned limited sales, and a current market trim are different stages. Likewise, “STI-tuned” describes engineering or equipment; it does not by itself make a car an STI model.
