The Subaru Crosstrek has three broad North American generations: 2013–2017, 2018–2023, and 2024 onward. The biggest confirmed turning points are the 2018 move to Subaru’s Global Platform, the 2024 redesign, and the 2026 U.S. addition of a hybrid alongside a 2.5-liter engine standard on conventional trims. This guide focuses on those verified milestones rather than claiming a complete equipment changelog for every year.
How the Crosstrek generations break down
For U.S. and Canadian model-history purposes, the useful high-level divisions are first generation (2013–2017), second generation (2018–2023), and third generation (2024 onward). Subaru’s announcements identify the 2018 and 2024 models as all-new redesigns. The 2013–2017 span is broad model-history context, not a year-by-year equipment record.
The XV Crosstrek name was used in North America before the Crosstrek name was adopted for the 2016 model year, according to the model-history reference. This naming detail is secondary-source context, not a complete factory archive.

2013–2017: First-generation North American models
This period is commonly grouped as the first generation. The available manufacturer announcements cited here do not establish a reliable list of annual changes across these years, so equipment, safety features, and powertrain details should be checked against the specific vehicle’s original brochure or window sticker.

2018: Second-generation redesign
Subaru introduced an all-new Crosstrek for 2018, built on the Subaru Global Platform. The U.S. manufacturer announcement described a direct-injection 2.0-liter BOXER engine, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard Active Torque Vectoring, and X-Mode on CVT-equipped trims. Subaru also highlighted revised safety and chassis engineering. It reported that the new body structure was over 70% more rigid and absorbed 40% more crash energy than the outgoing model; those are Subaru’s comparisons, not independent test findings. The announcement also described roof rails. Subaru’s 2018 announcement
2019–2023: Second-generation period
These years remain within the second generation, but the sources cited here do not verify a complete annual list of trim, engine, safety, or technology changes. Do not assume that every year or trim was identical; use documentation for the exact model and market.

2024: Third-generation redesign
The 2024 Crosstrek brought another substantial reset, with revised chassis tuning, all-wheel-drive response, steering, seating, cabin refinement, safety, and multimedia. Subaru Canada described the chassis as 10% stiffer than before. Subaru of America said the model used a version of the WRX’s dual-pinion electronic power-steering rack, characterizing it as more direct and responsive. Both are manufacturer claims. 2026: U.S. engine update and hybrid introduction
For the 2026 U.S. model year, Subaru made the 2.5-liter engine standard across conventional Crosstrek trims and introduced a series-parallel hybrid using a 2.5-liter engine, electric motors, and a lithium-ion battery. Subaru quotes 194 combined horsepower for the hybrid. Its current model page claims up to 38% better city fuel economy than conventional Crosstrek models; that is Subaru’s comparison, not an independent real-world test. Subaru also announced new standard features on selected trims, but the cited information does not provide a complete feature-by-feature annual changelog. Europe uses different naming and specifications
Subaru launched the all-new Crosstrek in Europe in October 2023 as the successor to the XV. Subaru Europe described a 2.0-liter e-BOXER mild-hybrid configuration. That European powertrain and equipment information should not be applied to U.S. or Canadian models. Subaru Europe said the XV represented more than 40% of its sales mix from January through August 2023; this is a European sales-mix measure, distinct from U.S. unit sales. - Generation: The 2018 and 2024 redesigns mark the clearest platform and feature transitions in the verified timeline.
- Market and trim: Engine assignments and trim names differ between countries and can change across model years.
- Safety and infotainment: Availability depends on year and trim; verify the specific vehicle rather than assuming a feature is standard across a generation.
- Roof setup: Rails and crossbar mounting provisions vary. Before buying Subaru Crosstrek roof crossbars or a cargo carrier, verify the model year, trim, factory configuration, accessory fit, and load limits.
- Original documentation: For a used Crosstrek, compare the exact vehicle against its original brochure, window sticker, or equipment list.
This is a guide to key generation changes and documented milestones, not a complete year-by-year equipment changelog for every Crosstrek sold from 2013 through 2026.
