The Brataroo is a one-off Gymkhana race car based on a 1978 Subaru BRAT—not a production model or a performance package for sale. Subaru of America and Vermont SportsCar built it for Travis Pastrana’s third Gymkhana film, Gymkhana: Aussie Shred, which premiered on December 9, 2025.
What is the Brataroo?
The Brataroo 9500 Turbo takes the shape of a 1978 Subaru BRAT and reworks it as a purpose-built stunt car. Subaru says its bodywork is carbon fiber over a Vermont SportsCar-engineered chassis, with a custom widebody and roll cage. The name nods to its engine’s ability to rev beyond 9,500 rpm.
Subaru of America and technical partner Vermont SportsCar developed the car. Travis Pastrana drove it in his third Gymkhana film. The project was revealed by Subaru on November 4, 2025; the finished film followed on December 9. Subaru’s reveal and film announcement describe the build and its role in the production.
How much power does the Brataroo make?
Subaru publishes 670 horsepower and 680 lb-ft of torque for the Brataroo’s rallycross-derived turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine. The company says it revs beyond 9,500 rpm. These are Subaru’s specifications for this custom car, not independently verified test results.

The published setup also includes all-wheel drive and a six-speed sequential SADEV gearbox. Subaru lists a 2,857-pound weight and a 175-mph top speed; those figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent test.
What does the Brataroo’s active aero do?
The Brataroo’s standout aerodynamic feature is a set of adjustable components intended to let the team change the car’s balance and behavior for different stunts.
Rank #2
- Pivoting front fender louvers: Subaru says these adjust front-end balance.
- Interchangeable rear wings: Both wings have adjustable angles of attack. The larger wing expands as it rises to add surface area; the smaller wing is intended for more general tire-shredding.
- Adjustable ride height: Subaru also lists this among the car’s features.
The design is built around changing the car’s aerodynamic setup rather than relying on one fixed wing configuration. Subaru’s Brataroo specifications describe the aero hardware.
What else is in the Brataroo’s specification?
Subaru lists custom 18-inch forged KMC wheels and two tire options: Yokohama ADVAN A052 or ADVAN Apex, selected for the stunt and surface conditions. The listed cockpit and fluid specifications include:

These details belong to the Brataroo’s custom motorsport build; they are not equipment specifications for a production BRAT.
What happens in Gymkhana: Aussie Shred?
The film takes Pastrana across Australia, with scenes in the Outback, at Sydney Harbour and on Bathurst’s Mount Panorama. Subaru says the Brataroo made a 160-foot jump across a canyon gap over a road train. That distance is Subaru’s account of the film stunt, not an independently measured performance claim.

Subaru also names Dakar champion Toby Price, Subaru WRC driver Chris Atkinson, Nitro Circus riders, V8 Supercars drivers, and Moog and Marty of Mighty Car Mods among the film’s appearances.
“The Brataroo is hands down the craziest Gymkhana car we’ve ever built.”

Pastrana’s statement in Subaru’s film announcement goes on: “Every part of this car was designed to take the abuse we threw at it while making this film. From hanging two tires off a pier to flying 160 feet across a 10-story deep canyon gap over a road train. Skimming across a deep lake and scaring myself every step of the way.”
At the car’s reveal, Pastrana also called it “completely unhinged – in the best way possible,” and said, “It’s got the soul of a vintage Subaru with the tech to do things no Gymkhana car has ever done.”
