The Subaru BRAT deserves a comeback because it offered something more distinctive than a smaller version of a conventional pickup: a compact, car-based 4WD vehicle with an open bed and an unmistakable identity. That makes a persuasive case for revisiting the idea—not proof that Subaru plans to build one or that buyers would flock to it.
What made the Subaru BRAT different?
Subaru says it introduced the BRAT in 1977 as a small, dual-range four-wheel-drive vehicle. Its defining detail was two bucket seats fixed to the open bed, an unusual arrangement that made the vehicle instantly recognizable. Subaru’s heritage account describes it as an export recreational vehicle designed for North America, based on the Leone 4WD, with a two-seat cabin and cargo bed behind it. Subaru of America’s history and Subaru Corporation’s heritage page frame the BRAT as a blend of passenger-car roots, 4WD capability and pickup form.
That combination—not any claim that it could replace a full-size work truck—is the point worth reviving. The official history cited here does not give payload, towing, fuel-economy or safety specifications, so those capabilities should not be assumed.
Why the BRAT concept still makes a case for itself
A specific idea, not just a retro name
The BRAT had a clear identity: a small 4WD vehicle with an open cargo bed and a layout unlike an ordinary pickup. A revival could draw on that recognizable package rather than rely on a heritage badge alone. Its historic bed-mounted seats are part of that identity, not a recommendation for carrying passengers in an open bed today; current safety and legal requirements are not established here.

A useful middle ground to explore
As an editorial argument, a modern BRAT could be imagined for drivers who want an open bed and four-wheel-drive utility without choosing a conventional full-size pickup. Its passenger-car foundation and compact character give the idea a coherent proposition: everyday usability paired with a bed for gear. That is a design possibility, not evidence of measured buyer demand, and no current competitor specifications are established here for a direct comparison.
Heritage that Subaru is already using
Subaru Motorsports USA’s November 4, 2025 release introduced the Brataroo 9500 Turbo, a bespoke Gymkhana car based on a 1978 BRAT and developed with technical partner Vermont SportsCar. Subaru describes it as a purpose-built motorsport machine. The build shows that the BRAT name and styling still have a role in Subaru’s official storytelling; it is not a consumer vehicle announcement or proof that a road-going revival would sell. Has Subaru announced a production BRAT?
The official sources reviewed here do not substantiate a consumer production comeback. Subaru Corporation’s production and sales release index, current through August 2026 in the reviewed result, does not establish an announced production BRAT. That is a careful limit on what these sources show, not proof that no announcement exists elsewhere. Subaru Corporation’s production and sales releases
What a credible modern revival would need to prove
A new BRAT would have to translate its memorable format into a practical modern vehicle. Until Subaru announces one, any proposed specifications or business case remain hypothetical. A meaningful evaluation would need verified details such as:

The strongest case is that the BRAT represents a distinctive Subaru idea: compact 4WD utility packaged with passenger-car roots and a genuinely memorable design. Subaru’s modern motorsport tribute gives that heritage fresh visibility. Whether the concept fits today’s buyers, and whether Subaru will build a consumer model, remain unanswered. The BRAT deserves consideration as a revival idea; the evidence does not yet make a production return a fact.
