A spark plug lights a small charge in a cup-like chamber; expanding gases shoot through openings into the cylinder to help ignite its larger air-fuel charge. Stellantis calls it the industry’s first high-volume TJI application, and names the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee as its first vehicle application.
What is turbulent jet ignition?
TJI is a way to initiate combustion using a small pre-chamber above the main cylinder chamber. In Stellantis’s description, fuel in the cup-like chamber is ignited by a spark plug. The expanding, burning gases then pass through openings as jets into the main chamber, helping ignite the larger air-fuel charge. Stellantis says this promotes a faster, more complete burn; that explanation is not, by itself, proof of a particular fuel-economy or performance gain in every driving condition.

The Hurricane 4 uses a passive TJI system. It also has a second spark plug in each cylinder, associated with the main combustion chamber. The two plugs serve distinct parts of the combustion arrangement rather than representing a single plug firing into the whole cylinder.
How does TJI work in the Hurricane 4 Turbo?
Two ignition points and two fuel-injection systems
Each cylinder has one spark plug for the TJI pre-chamber and another for the main chamber. Fuel delivery combines port injection, which sprays fuel into the intake ports, with high-pressure direct injection into the cylinders. Stellantis says the engine controller can use either system or both, depending on operating conditions.

- Helps force air into an internal combustion engine
- Helps increase the amount of air entering your vehicle's engine to create more power with each piston stroke
- Designed, engineered, tested, and warranted for GM vehicles
- Precise fit for ease of installation
- For proper installation, locate your nearest GM dealer, independent service center, or body shop
- Cold start: Stellantis says both injection systems operate.
- Idle and low loads: Port injection is used.
- Typical and peak power: Both systems operate; at peak power, direct injection supplies most of the fuel.
Miller Cycle and regular gasoline
Stellantis says early intake-valve closing implements a Miller Cycle operating strategy. The company describes that strategy, together with TJI, as supporting a 12:1 compression ratio while allowing the engine to use regular 87-octane gasoline. These are the manufacturer’s design statements, not independent findings about fuel economy or emissions.
What power and turbo specifications has Stellantis published?
Stellantis lists 324 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 332 lb-ft from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm. It also says 90% of peak torque is available from 2,600 to 5,600 rpm, and 100% from 3,000 to 4,500 rpm. These are published manufacturer specifications; the launch announcement is not a road-test report.

The engine uses a variable-geometry turbocharger with active vanes and up to 35 psi (2.4 bar) of boost, according to Stellantis. Charge air is cooled by a liquid-to-air cooler. Separately, turbo supplier BorgWarner announced that it would supply a 50 mm variable turbine geometry turbocharger for the engine.

Stellantis says the Hurricane 4 uses 10% less fuel while delivering 20% more power than its current 2.0-liter DOHC I-4. The reviewed launch announcement does not state a test cycle or protocol for that comparison. It should therefore be read as a Stellantis claim, not as an independently verified real-world result or a guarantee for every vehicle or driving pattern.

The announcement provides no independent comparative road-test results, real-world fuel-economy figures, long-term reliability data, failure rates, service intervals, or repair costs. A meaningful comparison with another vehicle or engine would require like-for-like figures, including certified fuel economy on the same test cycle and comparable vehicle configurations.
What does Stellantis mean by “industry first”?
Stellantis describes TJI as a technology used in top-tier racing engines and calls the Hurricane 4 its first high-volume application. The related Grand Cherokee announcement calls it the industry’s first high-volume TJI application. The claim is specifically about a high-volume application; it should not be broadened into a claim that this is the first production use of any pre-chamber ignition system.

Which vehicle gets the Hurricane 4 Turbo first?
Stellantis identifies the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee as the engine’s first application. BorgWarner’s October 30, 2025 announcement described it as a late-availability offering at that time. That timing statement is not a current order or trim guide, so buyers should check current Jeep availability for the configuration and market they want.
