In the U.S., it is the 2026 Audi S5 sedan—not an S5 Sportback—and it combines a sharper design with more power, a new platform and considerably more cabin technology.
The spy photos were right about the direction, but not quite about the name. Audi’s camouflaged prototype previewed a sleeker, more modern successor to the old S5 Sportback; the production car is now part of the new combustion-powered A5 family. In the United States, Audi sells it as the 2026 Audi S5 sedan, not the S5 Sportback.
It is still effectively the old Sportback idea evolved: a fastback-shaped luxury performance car with a liftback-style rear opening, a turbocharged V6, quattro all-wheel drive and considerably more technology. Whether it is “way sexier” is personal taste, but the new S5 has the cleaner surfaces, sharper lighting and more purposeful stance to make that argument.
What the 2023 spy report got right
Motor1’s first report appeared on June 14, 2023, when the next-generation car was still hidden beneath camouflage. The prototype was identified as an S5 Sportback and appeared to have a production-style body, final-looking lighting units, flush door handles and a tailgate-like rear opening.

The photographs also suggested a smaller upper grille framed by separate lower air intakes. Quad exhaust outlets remained visible beneath the rear bumper, preserving one of the S5’s most recognizable performance-car details. The roofline looked broadly familiar, but the body appeared more tightly sculpted and less dependent on the outgoing car’s soft, rounded surfacing.
A second Motor1 report, published on November 28, 2023, showed a similar prototype near the Nürburgring. It appeared to have production body panels and final lights fitted, reinforcing the idea that the spy car was close to the finished design.
Those reports were visual readings of camouflaged prototypes—not a road test and not confirmation of every piece of equipment. Still, the broad prediction held up well when Audi revealed the production A5 family in July 2024.
The biggest correction: it is not officially an S5 Sportback in America
Audi reorganized its combustion-powered midsize range around the A5 name. The production family includes the A5 and S5 Sedan as well as the A5 and S5 Avant. That means the outgoing S4 sedan and S5 Sportback formula was replaced by a new A5-based lineup rather than continued under exactly the same names.

In Europe, Audi’s official materials distinguish the S5 Sedan and S5 Avant as separate body styles. In the United States, Audi currently markets the car as the 2026 S5, a performance-oriented luxury midsize sedan. Calling it an “S5 Sportback” in a headline would therefore be inaccurate for the final U.S. vehicle.
The distinction does not mean the new sedan has become an ordinary three-box car. It retains a sweeping roofline and a liftback-style trunk opening, giving it much of the practicality that made the old Sportback appealing. Audi also says the new car has a 4.83-meter body, a 2,900-millimeter wheelbase and substantially more cargo flexibility than a conventional sedan.
Why the production car looks more expensive—and arguably sexier
The new S5’s design is not a revolution, but it is a more coherent interpretation of Audi’s current styling language. The front end is cleaner and more integrated, while the lower bumper has larger, more aggressively shaped air inlets. The grille is visually less dominant than before, allowing the headlights and lower aerodynamic treatment to do more of the work.

Flush door handles make the sides look smoother, and the roofline flows into a more muscular rear section. Audi offers a panoramic glass roof in the U.S., while available 20-inch wheels and black-optic trim give the car a darker, more aggressive appearance. The black-optic package can also include dark chrome exhaust tips.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe lighting is another major step forward. Audi offers Matrix-design LED headlights, and the S5 can be equipped with second-generation digital OLED rear lights. Audi says the rear lights can display communication-light functions, adding a technology feature that was not part of the old car’s visual identity.
Put together, those details make the new S5 look more deliberate than the outgoing B9/B9.5 Sportback. It has fewer of the rounded, conservative cues that made the old car easy to overlook beside a BMW M340i or Mercedes-AMG C43.
The design trade-off: framed windows
One detail from the spy photos did not point toward a more overtly coupe-like car. The prototype appeared to have conventional framed side glass rather than the frameless windows used by the outgoing S5 Sportback.
That may reduce some of the old car’s coupé-like visual sophistication. It may also bring practical benefits, but Audi has not officially stated why the design changed. It would be speculation to claim that the framed windows were chosen specifically for better sealing, refinement or manufacturing efficiency.

More power, a different transmission and mild-hybrid hardware
The outgoing U.S. S5 Sportback is a useful baseline. Audi’s 2025 U.S. lineup information listed it with a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 producing 349 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

The current U.S. S5 moves to a turbocharged V6 rated at 362 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It uses standard quattro all-wheel drive and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. Audi lists a claimed 0-to-60-mph time of 4.3 seconds and a starting price of $63,300 for the 2026 model in the United States.
Those figures are market-specific. They should not be mixed with European specifications, where Audi describes the S5’s 3.0-liter V6 TFSI as producing 270 kW/367 PS. European versions also use Audi’s 48-volt MHEV-plus system.
Audi says the MHEV-plus system can provide additional electric assistance, recover energy during deceleration and make stop-and-go operation smoother. Those are Audi’s system claims rather than independent performance-test results. The U.S. specification should be checked separately because power ratings, equipment and drivetrain details can vary by market.
The chassis is more than a cosmetic update
The new S5 is based on Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture. Audi’s European product information also identifies a quattro sport differential with torque vectoring and an adjustable all-wheel-drive clutch. Available adaptive damping is intended to broaden the car’s range from comfortable daily transportation to more controlled driving on a winding road.
That hardware matters because the new S5 is not simply the old Sportback wearing a sharper body. The platform, body structure, powertrain electronics and cabin technology all move the car into a new generation. The result is a more consequential redesign than the camouflage initially suggested.
At the same time, the S5 remains positioned below Audi’s full RS models. Its appeal is the combination of everyday usability, six-cylinder power, all-weather traction and a relatively discreet shape—not the extreme track focus of an RS5.

The exterior is only half of the change. The U.S. S5 offers a 14.5-inch MMI touch display, with an available 10.9-inch passenger display. Other available technology includes adaptive cruise assist, a head-up display and an 810-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with 20 speakers and headrest speakers.

The equipment list is substantially more ambitious than the old Sportback’s cabin technology. Buyers should pay close attention to packaging, however: “available” equipment is not necessarily standard on every U.S. S5, and Audi can revise packages, pricing and inventory during a model-year run.
How the new S5 compares with the old S5 Sportback
| Item | Outgoing U.S. 2025 S5 Sportback | Current U.S. 2026 S5 |
|---|---|---|
| Market name | S5 Sportback | S5 sedan |
| Engine | 3.0-liter TFSI V6 | Turbocharged V6 |
| Horsepower | 349 hp | 362 hp |
| Torque | 369 lb-ft | 406 lb-ft |
| Transmission | Eight-speed Tiptronic | Seven-speed S tronic |
| All-wheel drive | quattro | Standard quattro |
| Body concept | Sportback liftback | Fastback-shaped sedan with liftback-style practicality |
The table shows why the new model should not be dismissed as a styling exercise. It adds 13 horsepower and 37 lb-ft of torque in U.S. specification, changes transmission families and introduces a new platform and expanded electrical architecture.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the spy shots could not reveal
Camouflage made the original prototype seem like a relatively straightforward evolution. The production car reveals several changes that were impossible to evaluate from the roadside:
- Platform: The new S5 moves to Audi’s Premium Platform Combustion architecture.
- Electrification: European versions add a 48-volt MHEV-plus system.
- Practicality: The sedan has a liftback-style rear opening and more flexible cargo usability than a traditional sedan.
- Lighting: Digital OLED rear lights and available Matrix LED headlights add new functionality as well as a different appearance.
- Cabin technology: The large MMI display, passenger screen, head-up display and upgraded audio system move the interior substantially beyond the previous generation.
- Body lineup: Audi now offers Sedan and Avant versions rather than simply carrying forward the old A4/S4 and A5/S5 naming structure.
Should old S5 Sportback owners upgrade?
The answer depends on what attracted you to the old car. If you wanted a discreet, fast, all-weather daily driver with a hatchback-like rear opening, the new S5 preserves the essential formula while adding power, torque and technology.
If the frameless windows and slightly understated coupe character were central to the appeal, the new car is more complicated. The framed glass may make the S5 look more like a conventional sedan, even though the roofline and liftback practicality remain. It is a newer and more technically advanced design, but not a perfect visual continuation of the old Sportback.
Before ordering, verify the exact equipment and pricing for the intended model year. Readers ready to move from the spy story to a real car can check 2026 Audi S5 inventory or use Audi’s build-and-price tools, but availability and installed options can change by dealer and region.
Ownership extras worth checking
The new body and model-year change make fitment especially important for practical accessories. If you are protecting the cabin or cargo area, look for Audi S5 accessories through Audi’s Genuine Parts and Accessories channel and confirm compatibility by model year, body style and VIN. An accessory listed for the outgoing S5 Sportback should not automatically be assumed to fit the 2026 S5 sedan or the S5 Avant.

Verdict: sexier, yes—but more importantly, substantially new
The 2023 spy reports correctly anticipated the new S5’s broad visual direction: a sweeping roofline, cleaner bodywork, flush handles, more assertive air intakes, finished-looking lights and retained quad exhausts. They also exposed the important compromise early: the new car appears to abandon the outgoing Sportback’s frameless windows.
Audi’s production car adds the missing context. This is no longer officially an S5 Sportback in the U.S.; it is the 2026 S5 sedan, positioned within a reorganized A5 family. Yet its fastback profile, liftback-style opening, V6 power and quattro system keep it closely connected to the car it replaces.
“Way sexier” remains an opinion, not a measurable specification. But the new S5 has a strong case: the design is sharper, the lighting is more distinctive, the cabin is more advanced, the U.S. car makes more power and torque, and the underlying vehicle is genuinely new. The camouflage did not hide a routine facelift. It hid a much more substantial evolution of Audi’s sportiest midsize daily driver.
