A reported Nürburgring sighting has revived speculation about a new Porsche 911 GT2 RS, but it does not confirm that the camouflaged car is a production-bound 992 GT2 RS—or that it will arrive for 2026. The available report describes a minimally camouflaged prototype; Porsche has not announced a new-generation GT2 RS in the sources available here. A separate Porsche project called the 2026 Flachbau RS is real, but it is a one-off conversion of an older 991.2, not the rumored 992.
What was reportedly spotted?
A May 15, 2025 TopSpeed article by Chris Chin is indexed as reporting that spy photographer SHProShots caught a minimally camouflaged prototype at the Nürburgring. The indexed excerpt establishes that a sighting was reported; it is not the full story or the underlying photographic evidence. The car’s identity, production status and specifications therefore remain unconfirmed. Muck Rack’s listing of the article provides the headline and excerpt.
A separate CarSpyMedia video, dated May 29, 2024, is titled as a 2026 992 GT2 RS test mule filmed at the Nürburgring. Its description calls the car a potential test mule and presents a 2026 launch and powertrain claims as expectations or rumors—not as Porsche-confirmed information. Watch the CarSpyMedia video.
What is—and is not—confirmed about a 992 GT2 RS?
The available sighting reports do not establish that the car is a GT2 RS, that it is intended for production, or that it will launch in 2026. They also do not confirm an engine, power output, price, production volume or final design. No official Porsche announcement for a production 992-generation GT2 RS is identified in the available sources.

Why the 2026 Flachbau RS is easy to confuse with a new GT2 RS
Porsche announced a car it calls the Flachbau RS in August 2026, but it is not a new 992-generation GT2 RS. Porsche says it is a customer-commissioned, road-legal one-off created from a like-new 2018 Type 991.2 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach Package. The work involved Porsche’s Sonderwunsch team, Style Porsche, development engineers from Weissach, Porsche Motorsport and Manthey. Porsche says the drive was left unchanged at the customer’s request. Porsche’s Flachbau RS announcement documents the conversion.
The name and date can mislead: “2026” refers to the announcement, and “GT2 RS” identifies the older car used as the base. Neither makes the Flachbau RS evidence of a production 992 GT2 RS.

What Porsche changed on the one-off
The bespoke bodywork takes inspiration from the 935/78 “Moby Dick.” Porsche lists lower-profile front wings with louvres, a redesigned front bumper, tiered LED headlights, rear-wheel aerodiscs and an adjustable rear wing on S-shaped mounts. The wing draws inspiration from the Type 992 911 GT3 R rennsport and sits about five centimetres higher than the donor car’s. Manthey Kit-based underbody components include a rear diffuser. These are Flachbau RS details, not confirmed features of a future 992 GT2 RS. Porsche’s official account describes the design and development.
What its performance figures describe
Porsche says lightweight measures removed 31.6 kg from the Flachbau RS. It reports three manually selectable rear-wing positions. Compared with a 911 GT2 RS fitted with the Manthey Kit at corresponding wing settings, Porsche reports rear-axle downforce increases of two percent in High Downforce and three percent in Low Downforce. At 340 km/h in the High Downforce setting, Porsche reports 554 kg of rear-axle downforce. These figures apply to the bespoke 991.2 conversion; they are not estimates or specifications for a 992 GT2 RS.

Porsche’s accompanying brand story identifies the donor car’s 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine as producing 700 PS. That figure belongs to the 2018 Type 991.2 GT2 RS used for the Flachbau project, not to a confirmed 992 model. Porsche’s Flachbau RS brand story gives further details about the donor car and project.

The reports are worth watching, but they are not enough to call this a confirmed 2026 GT2 RS. A prototype sighting can prompt a plausible identification; without official confirmation, it cannot settle the car’s name, production plans or specifications. Keep the reported Nürburgring prototype separate from Porsche’s documented Flachbau RS: one is the subject of spy reports, while the other is a customer-specific conversion of a 2018 991.2 GT2 RS.
