SHM later discontinued development and launch of both vehicle models on March 25, 2026, then announced a structural scale-down on April 21, 2026.
The press conference was held from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. Pacific time at SHM’s AFEELA booth in Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth 20800. SHM had announced CES public-show dates of January 6–9, 2026, and described the January 5 presentation as its first independent CES press conference.
This article treats the event as a historical live-update and retrospective story. The January presentation explains what Sony Honda Mobility promised; the March and April corporate announcements explain why AFEELA’s launch roadmap is no longer current.
Key takeaways

What happened at the Sony Honda Mobility CES 2026 press conference?
Sony Honda Mobility’s CES 2026 press conference presented AFEELA as an electric-vehicle program built around software, artificial intelligence, driver assistance, and entertainment rather than only conventional vehicle hardware.

The event took place on Monday, January 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. Pacific time at the AFEELA booth in Central Hall, booth 20800, at the Las Vegas Convention Center. SHM described the event as its first independent press conference at CES. CES public-show dates listed by SHM were January 6 through January 9, 2026. The presentation was carried on the official AFEELA YouTube stream, which remains the most direct record of the presentation.
The January announcements need to be read as a dated snapshot. SHM presented AFEELA 1 and AFEELA Prototype 2026 as part of a launch roadmap in January, but the companies later announced that the vehicle programs would not proceed.
| Date | Announcement or event | What it means now |
|---|---|---|
| January 2, 2026 | SHM announced AFEELA 1 trial production in Ohio and a new Quality Gate inspection facility. | The program had progressed beyond a static auto-show concept, but trial production was not the same as customer delivery or full-scale production. |
| January 5, 2026 | SHM held its CES press conference, showed AFEELA 1 pre-production vehicles, and world-premiered AFEELA Prototype 2026. | The presentation is now a historical account of the company’s planned product and software strategy. |
| January 6–9, 2026 | SHM planned public CES booth demonstrations and displays. | The dates have passed; they do not represent an ongoing AFEELA sales or reservation event. |
| March 25, 2026 | Sony, Honda, and SHM announced the discontinuation of development and launch of AFEELA 1 and the second AFEELA model. | The announced vehicle launch roadmap was canceled, and current California reservation holders were promised full refunds. |
| April 21, 2026 | The companies announced a review of SHM’s structure and a scale-down of operations. | SHM’s operating framework was being reduced rather than advancing toward the CES vehicle launches. |
What did SHM show at CES 2026?
SHM showed AFEELA 1 as a pre-production version of its first intended production model and introduced AFEELA Prototype 2026 as a separate concept intended to expand the AFEELA idea.
| Model | CES 2026 status | Plan announced in January | Status after March 25, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| AFEELA 1 | Pre-production vehicle; SHM displayed vehicles in multiple color variations. | California deliveries during 2026, expansion to Arizona in 2027, and Japan deliveries in the first half of 2027. | Development and launch were discontinued. SHM said current California reservation holders would receive full refunds. |
| AFEELA Prototype 2026 | World-premiere prototype building on the AFEELA 1 concept, with greater spatial flexibility and accessibility. | A production model based on the prototype could launch in the United States as early as 2028. | The 2028 plan is no longer current. The companies also discontinued the second AFEELA model under development. |
The delivery dates in the table were company-announced targets, not independently verified delivery dates. The later discontinuation announcement superseded every one of those targets.
Some searches describe AFEELA Prototype 2026 as an SUV. SHM’s CES announcement called it the AFEELA Prototype 2026 and described its spatial flexibility and accessibility, but the supplied company material does not establish an official SUV classification. Calling it a prototype is more precise.
What was AFEELA 1 supposed to be?
AFEELA 1 was supposed to be SHM’s first production vehicle, combining an electric powertrain with a large software and entertainment layer. At CES, SHM presented AFEELA 1 as a pre-production vehicle rather than an already delivered consumer car.
SHM’s January plan placed California first, followed by Arizona in 2027 and Japan in the first half of 2027. Those plans were meaningful because SHM had also announced trial production and quality inspections, but they never became completed customer deliveries. The March 25 announcement specifically said development and launch had been discontinued.
Was AFEELA 1 actually in production?
AFEELA 1 had entered trial production, but the available evidence does not show that AFEELA 1 reached mass production, completed every regulatory approval, or was delivered to customers before the program was canceled.

On January 2, 2026, SHM announced trial production runs at Honda’s East Liberty Auto Plant in Ohio. SHM also announced a Quality Gate facility for additional checks before vehicles advanced further. The announced inspection categories included:
- Infotainment operation
- Sensor performance
- Connectivity stability
- Exterior surface continuity
- Reflection uniformity
- Color accuracy
The official SHM trial-production announcement supports the distinction between an advanced pre-production program and a vehicle already available to buyers.
“We will ensure that all integrated functions installed in the vehicle operate completely as designed to deliver the experience promised by AFEELA.” — Susan Dulik, Product Quality Manager, Quality Control, Sony Honda Mobility of America Inc., January 2, 2026.
SHM’s manufacturing release also stated that AFEELA 1 integrated 40 sensors. According to Sony Honda Mobility of America (2026), the 40-sensor specification described the planned vehicle; the specification did not prove that AFEELA had achieved Level 4 autonomy or reached customers.

How was AFEELA supposed to use AI and driver assistance?
SHM described AFEELA’s AI and driver-assistance technology as a development roadmap: AFEELA Intelligent Drive was moving toward an end-to-end artificial-intelligence model incorporating a vision-language model, while the company described Level 2+ as a starting point and Level 4-equivalent capability as a future goal.
| Technology | SHM’s CES description | Accurate interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| AFEELA Intelligent Drive | Enhancement toward an end-to-end AI model incorporating a vision-language model. | A driver-assistance roadmap, not proof that the CES vehicle achieved Level 4 autonomy. |
| Driver-assistance capability | Company-described Level 2+ starting point and a future Level 4-equivalent aim. | Level 4-equivalent was a future development goal, not an achieved capability. |
| AFEELA Personal Agent | Interactive conversational AI using Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service. | A planned in-car assistant intended to personalize interaction with drivers and passengers; not evidence of a currently available consumer service. |
| Vehicle sensing | SHM reported 40 integrated sensors for AFEELA 1. | A company-reported hardware specification that does not, by itself, establish autonomous-driving performance. |
SHM’s CES 2026 announcement used the language of goals and planned enhancements. The distinction matters: “self-driving AFEELA” is not an accurate unqualified description of what SHM demonstrated or had achieved at CES.
The AFEELA Personal Agent was intended to make the vehicle a more conversational partner. SHM presented the assistant as a way for the driver and passengers to interact with the vehicle more naturally, with personalization based on preferences and context. The announcement did not establish a consumer release date for the assistant independent of the canceled vehicle program.
Why did Sony call AFEELA a Creative Entertainment Space?
SHM called AFEELA a “Creative Entertainment Space” because the company wanted travel time and cabin space to support software, content, applications, and personalized interaction in addition to transportation.

“Mobility as a Creative Entertainment Space” — Sony Honda Mobility, CES 2026 announcement.
SHM’s broader brand description said, “AFEELA represents the fusion of intelligence and emotion in motion.” That language was corporate positioning, not an independently measured product capability. SHM said vehicles should evolve from driver-centric machines into intelligent partners that understand user preferences and emotions, with vehicle AI helping make better use of time and space during travel.
The concept reflected the strategic combination behind Sony Honda Mobility. Honda brought automotive development and manufacturing expertise, while Sony’s role was associated with sensors, entertainment, software, artificial intelligence, and creator ecosystems. The division of strengths explains why the CES presentation spent as much time on software and content participation as on the vehicle itself, but it should not be read as proof that every Sony technology was a production feature.
What was the AFEELA Co-Creation Program?
The AFEELA Co-Creation Program was SHM’s proposed developer and creator framework for building in-vehicle entertainment, themes, and applications.
SHM said it was developing cloud APIs and an Android application development environment for the vehicle’s infotainment system. The intended model would give creators and developers access to information needed to design experiences for AFEELA rather than limiting the cabin to software created solely by the automaker.
SHM also described a proposed open, on-chain mobility-service platform using a token-based incentive model under an “X-to-Earn” concept. The stated idea was to connect ideation, development, and user experience or evaluation, with the possibility of opening the ecosystem to other automakers and service providers. The X-to-Earn system was a proposal or development concept, not a launched consumer service.
Which technology and entertainment partners were connected to AFEELA?
SHM named Qualcomm Technologies, Microsoft, and Sony Interactive Entertainment in connection with different parts of the CES technology and entertainment strategy, but the announcements did not make every named partner a standard consumer feature or bundled product.
| Organisation or platform | Announced connection | What readers should not infer |
|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm Technologies | Planned use of the Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions in SHM’s future electrical/electronic architecture. | The announcement did not establish a retail Qualcomm product for AFEELA owners or prove that every planned component reached production. |
| Microsoft | Azure OpenAI Service was identified as the technology used for the AFEELA Personal Agent. | Azure OpenAI Service is an enterprise cloud technology in this context, not a consumer AFEELA accessory or standalone recommendation. |
| Sony Interactive Entertainment | Sony Interactive Entertainment was included among the guest speakers, consistent with SHM’s emphasis on gaming, entertainment, and creator participation. | SHM did not establish that a PlayStation console was included with AFEELA or that a specific PlayStation integration was available for purchase. |
The partner announcements help explain AFEELA’s intended identity: a vehicle platform with automotive hardware underneath and a software, content, and services ecosystem around the occupants. They do not establish that Qualcomm, Microsoft, or Sony Interactive Entertainment had delivered a finished consumer feature in a vehicle that reached market.

How much interest did SHM report before CES 2026?
SHM reported substantial event engagement, but the company’s figures were visitor and demonstration counts rather than sales, orders, reservations, or deliveries.
| Figure | Owner and date | What the figure measured | What it did not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| More than 100,000 visitors | Sony Honda Mobility, 2026 | Visitors to AFEELA Studios and exhibition events during the first year of reservations and events. | It was not a published order total, paid-sales figure, or independent measure of market demand. |
| More than 24,000 in-vehicle demonstrations | Sony Honda Mobility, 2026 | In-vehicle demonstrations conducted during the same period. | It was not a delivery count or proof that 24,000 people purchased AFEELA vehicles. |
| 40 sensors | Sony Honda Mobility of America, 2026 | Company-reported integrated sensor count for AFEELA 1. | It was not an autonomy rating or an independent test result. |
According to Sony Honda Mobility’s 2026 CES announcement, more than 100,000 visitors attended AFEELA Studios and exhibition events and more than 24,000 in-vehicle demonstrations took place. The figures show the scale of SHM’s public engagement effort, not the number of cars ultimately sold.
What happened to AFEELA after CES 2026?
AFEELA’s planned vehicle launch ended after CES: Sony, Honda, and SHM announced on March 25, 2026, that they had discontinued development and launch of AFEELA 1 and the second AFEELA model under development.
Why did Sony Honda Mobility cancel AFEELA 1?
The companies attributed the decision to Honda’s reassessment of its automobile-electrification strategy and the resulting loss of access to certain technologies and assets originally planned for SHM. SHM said it no longer had a viable path to bring the models to market as originally planned.
The March 25, 2026 corporate announcement said current California reservation holders would receive full refunds. The announcement did not say that AFEELA 1 had been delivered to customers; the official outcome was discontinuation of development and launch.
What did SHM announce on April 21, 2026?
On April 21, 2026, Sony, Honda, and SHM announced that it would be difficult to bring products and services aligned with SHM’s founding purpose to market in the short to medium term under the existing framework.
The companies announced a review of SHM’s structure and a scale-down of operations. Employees were expected in principle to be reassigned to the parent companies and related entities. Sony and Honda said they remained committed to contributing to the evolution of mobility and expected to continue discussing ways to create new value in the user experience through software, particularly as advanced driver-assistance systems become more mainstream.
The April 21 announcement on SHM’s future business direction does not revive the canceled AFEELA 1 or Prototype 2026 launch plans. It points instead to possible future software and mobility discussions outside the January vehicle roadmap.

Is AFEELA 1 still coming out?
No. AFEELA 1 is not still scheduled for release based on the latest official announcements in the supplied record. Sony, Honda, and SHM discontinued its development and launch on March 25, 2026, and current California reservation holders were promised full refunds.
The same update means that the California 2026, Arizona 2027, Japan first-half 2027, and United States 2028 targets should not be presented as current plans. SHM’s January CES presentation remains important for understanding what the companies intended to build, but it is not evidence of a vehicle that buyers can now order or receive.
What should readers remember about Sony AFEELA at CES 2026?
Sony AFEELA at CES 2026 was a technology and product-roadmap presentation rather than a completed launch. SHM showed a pre-production AFEELA 1, introduced AFEELA Prototype 2026, and outlined an ambitious software ecosystem built around AI, driver assistance, entertainment, APIs, and creator participation.
The presentation also had some tangible readiness evidence: SHM reported trial production in Ohio, a Quality Gate inspection process, and a 40-sensor vehicle. But those details did not overcome the later business decision. The definitive current-status story is that AFEELA 1 and the second AFEELA model were discontinued on March 25, followed by SHM’s structural review and operational scale-down on April 21, 2026.
