UNSW Sydney’s student-built Sunswift 7 covered 1,000 km in 11 hours 52.08 minutes in 2022, averaging nearly 85 km/h. UNSW reported that Guinness World Records confirmed it in the category “Fastest EV over 1000km on a single charge.” Here, “speed record” means the average pace over the full distance—not the car’s top speed.
What Sunswift 7’s 1,000 km record measures
The attempt took place at the Australian Automotive Research Centre in Wensleydale, Victoria. UNSW said experts analyzed and confirmed the timing information and vehicle telemetry before the Guinness certificate was conferred. The result combines a distance, a single-charge condition and the time taken: 1,000 km in 11 hours 52.08 minutes, or nearly 85 km/h on average. UNSW’s account of the 2022 record identifies the category as “Fastest EV over 1000km on a single charge.”
Is Sunswift 7 the fastest solar-powered car?
Not by every measure. A car’s average speed over a 1,000 km endurance run is different from its peak speed. Guinness’s page for fastest speed by a solar-powered race or motorsport car lists 91.332 km/h, achieved by Kenjiro Shinozuka on 20 August 2014. That is a separate category from Sunswift 7’s single-charge distance record. Guinness’s solar-powered car speed listing also cautions that records change and are not immediately published online, so its page should be read as the listing currently shown, not as proof that a category can never change.
How the other solar-car claims differ
Agoria Solar Team says its BluePoint Atlas traveled 1,051 km in 12 hours using solar energy. That is a team-reported result framed around distance within a fixed 12-hour window. The reviewed team page does not establish it as a Guinness single-charge record, so it should not be treated as a replacement for Sunswift 7’s separately defined and Guinness-confirmed category. Agoria Solar Team’s announcement attributes the result to the team.

Why the result is not a production-EV benchmark
Sunswift 7 is a purpose-built student competition car, not a road-going production EV. UNSW’s 2025 report gives its World Solar Challenge configuration as weighing 500 kg, with a drag coefficient of 0.095. Those are details for that specified competition configuration, not a like-for-like comparison with a consumer car. For the 2022 record vehicle, team principal Richard Hopkins noted that it lacked road-car features including airbags and air conditioning. He told UNSW: “Sunswift 7 isn’t a production car of the future, since we’ve compromised on comfort and the cost is prohibitive.” UNSW’s 2025 report on Sunswift 7 and the World Solar Challenge provides the later configuration details.
Keep the record separate from the World Solar Challenge result
The 1,000 km Guinness-confirmed attempt was a 2022 endurance result, not the outcome of the World Solar Challenge race. UNSW says Sunswift 7 competed in the event. In 2023, strong winds prevented all cars from completing the full 3,000 km route; Sunswift was subsequently awarded victory under a points system that considered energy use, practicality and stage times. That race outcome is a separate achievement, judged under different conditions and criteria.

What the result says—and does not say
The record demonstrates that Sunswift 7 completed a long single-charge run at a sustained average pace in its competition-car configuration. It does not show that a road-going EV can match that result: the vehicle’s purpose, weight and equipment differ substantially. Hopkins called the achievement “validation of all the effort everyone in the team has put in,” according to UNSW.
