Solar Hyperion E-Scooter Was Claimed to Reach 65 mph—But Is It Highway-Legal?

Solar’s original Hyperion was reported to reach a claimed 65 mph, but that figure is not an independent test or proof of highway legality. Its 70-mile range claim was tied to cruising at 30 mph.

The original Solar Hyperion was reported in 2024 to have a manufacturer-claimed top speed of 65 mph (104.6 km/h), an extraordinary figure for a stand-up electric scooter. That is a reported claim, not an independent test result—and “highway speeds” does not mean the scooter is approved or legal for highway use.

How fast was the original Solar Hyperion claimed to go?

In a July 2024 launch report, New Atlas attributed a 65 mph (104.6 km/h) top-speed claim to Solar Scooters. The article did not report an independent speed test, so the figure should be understood as a manufacturer claim rather than a verified road-test result. New Atlas’s launch report describes the Hyperion as a dual-motor, full-suspension stand-up e-scooter.

The report listed two motors rated at 3,500 W each, with 4,500 W peak per motor. It also specified a 72 V, 40 Ah battery—2,880 Wh in total—using Samsung 21700 cells. These are launch-era specifications reported by New Atlas from Solar Scooters, not independently verified performance figures.

What range was reported, and under what conditions?

Solar’s reported range claim was up to 70 miles (112 km) per charge while cruising at 30 mph. That qualification matters: the 70-mile figure was not presented as range at the claimed 65 mph top speed. The sources do not provide an independent real-world range test or a range estimate at top speed.

Does “highway speeds” mean the Hyperion can legally use a highway?

No. A claimed maximum speed does not determine where a vehicle may be ridden. Federal vehicle classification and certification questions are separate from state and local rules governing road use.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a motor scooter capable of at least 20 mph and equipped with components needed for on-road use may be regarded as a motor vehicle for federal importation and certification purposes. NHTSA also notes that states may regulate vehicle use and that marketing labels such as “motor scooter” do not determine which federal standards apply. Its Importation and Certification FAQs do not establish that the Hyperion is federally certified, can be registered, or may be ridden on any particular road.

The launch report mentions lights and turn signals, but that alone does not establish the vehicle’s certification status or legality in a particular jurisdiction. A specific answer requires the applicable state and local rules and verified documentation for the scooter. NHTSA identifies FMVSS No. 218 as the motorcycle helmet performance standard; that reference does not, by itself, establish a universal helmet requirement for Hyperion riders.
