What happens in “The Californians: Malibu Beach”
The official SNL video description identifies the returning characters and actors: Devin (Bill Hader), Karina (Kristen Wiig) and Stuart (Fred Armisen). The setup sends Devin and Karina on an adventure with Stuart in his new Volkswagen ID. Buzz. The video was released on February 14, 2025. See SNL’s official video and description.
This is a branded SNL collaboration, not a separate regular episode installment. Its full official title is “The Californians: Malibu Beach (in Partnership with Volkswagen).”
How the commercial fits SNL50
Volkswagen of America said it partnered with NBCUniversal on the collaboration for SNL’s 50th anniversary. The company announced that the spot was scheduled to air during the SNL50: The Homecoming Concert on February 14, 2025, on Peacock. That announced broadcast schedule is distinct from the official video’s release date, even though both fall on the same day. Read Volkswagen’s campaign announcement.

Why the ID. Buzz features in the sketch
The ID. Buzz is the vehicle at the center of Stuart’s new-car premise. Volkswagen described it in its campaign announcement as “Volkswagen’s all-electric reimagining of its classic Microbus.” That wording is the automaker’s characterization of the model, rather than an independent assessment.

The California Fire Foundation message
Volkswagen said it pledged a monetary donation to the California Fire Foundation to support first responders and their families following California wildfires. The company announcement does not state the donation amount. The official SNL video description also points viewers to Volkswagen information about supporting firefighters and California communities. Neither source establishes that buying an ID. Buzz contributes to the donation.
