Small Toyota Cars That Defined the ’90s and 2000s

From the Starlet and Tercel to the Vitz/Yaris and US-market Scions, Toyota’s small-car story shifted by market and purpose in the 1990s and 2000s.

Toyota’s small-car story changed at the turn of the century: the Starlet and Tercel gave way to the globally developed Vitz/Yaris family, while the 2000s brought different compact-car identities in different markets. The Corolla, US-market Scions, and sporty or versatile Celica, MR2, and Yaris Verso broaden the picture—but they served different purposes and were not all the same size or sold everywhere.

Which small Toyotas mattered in the 1990s?

The Starlet and Tercel were the key small-car nameplates in Toyota’s 1990s story. Both offered alternatives to the larger Corolla, but with different body styles and roles.

Toyota Starlet: the small hatchback predecessor

The 80-series Starlet reached Japan in December 1989 and Europe in 1990. Its fifth-generation 90-series arrived in Japan in January 1996 as a two-box hatchback with a roomy interior. Toyota UK gives its wheelbase as 2,300 mm and turning circle as 4,600 mm; those are figures for that model, not a comparison with today’s small cars. Production ended in July 1999, as Toyota introduced its successor, the Vitz/Yaris. Toyota UK’s Starlet history and Toyota’s Vitz lineage identify the Starlet as the Vitz’s predecessor.

Toyota Tercel/Corsa: another small-car line

The fifth-generation Tercel/Corsa launched in Japan in September 1994. Toyota’s history lists three-door hatchback bodywork, front-wheel drive and full-time four-wheel drive, with 1.3- and 1.5-litre petrol engines and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel in the Japanese-market range. Toyota called the Tercel the Corolla’s “little brother,” explaining that “The name was intended to identify this car as the Corolla’s ‘little brother.’” The Tercel/Corsa and sister models ended production in 1999 as the Vitz debuted. These details describe Toyota’s Japanese-market history, not a single specification shared by every country. Toyota’s Tercel/Corsa lineage provides the chronology and specifications.

Was the Toyota Echo the same car as the Yaris?

Echo, Yaris, and Vitz were regional names for the first-generation car in the same family. Toyota developed the Vitz as a compact for global use, unveiling it as the Yaris at the 1998 Paris Motor Show before releasing it in Japan as the Vitz in January 1999. Toyota’s lineage account says the platform and major components were designed anew for that global purpose. Toyota identifies the Vitz as the Starlet’s successor.

Market or event Name and timing Body or market detail
Japan Vitz, released January 1999 Three- or five-door hatchback; Toyota lists a 1.0-litre engine and a 1.3-litre four-wheel-drive variant added in August 1999.
Europe Yaris, launched April 1999 Three- or five-door hatchback.
Australasia Echo, from October 1999 Toyota UK’s history records the regional name and timing; it does not provide a single Echo specification here.
North America Yaris; arrival in late 2003 The regional launch came later than in Japan and Europe.
Other market derivatives Names and timing varied The platform also produced sedan and coupe versions for other markets.

The dates and market distinctions in the table come from Toyota UK’s Yaris history and Toyota’s Vitz lineage; they should not be combined into one global launch date or specification.

Why the first Yaris stood out

Toyota reports that the first-generation Yaris won both European Car of the Year and Japanese Car of the Year in 2000. Toyota UK also reported more than 1.1 million units sold worldwide by March 2002, and more than 1.2 million sold in Europe by the time its successor arrived. Those are manufacturer-published figures with different geographies and time points, not independent rankings. Toyota UK’s history and Toyota’s lineage page document the awards and reach.

The second-generation Yaris in the UK

Toyota UK says its second-generation Yaris launched there in January 2006 on a larger platform, with more storage, sliding rear seats, and three engine options. The UK account gives boot capacity as 272 litres, rising to 363 litres when the rear seats were adjusted; a 1.8-litre SR followed in 2007. These are UK model details, not universal equipment or capacities for every market. The account also records a 1.3-litre VVT-i option in 1999, a 1.5-litre T Sport in 2001, a diesel added to the UK range in 2002, and a 2003 facelift. Toyota UK’s Yaris history gives the regional chronology.

How did Toyota’s small-car range diversify in the 2000s?

There was no single small Toyota for every buyer or market. The Yaris continued as a hatchback, the Corolla served as a compact family car, and the US-market Scion brand added distinctive subcompacts. Toyota also put compact styling and packaging into sporty coupes, a roadster, and a versatile mini-MPV.

Scion xA, xB, and xD: a US-market strand

Toyota established Scion in the United States in 2003 as a brand aimed at reaching younger buyers and testing products. Toyota’s fact sheet describes the xA as a subcompact sold from 2003 to 2008, and the xB as the distinctive box-shaped model introduced in 2003. A second-generation xB arrived in 2008; in August of that year, the xD replaced the xA. Scion later transitioned back to Toyota in 2016. Toyota’s Scion fact sheet and the transition announcement give the model and brand timeline.

Toyota said more than one million Scions were sold from 2003 through 2015. In the same announcement, it reported that 70 percent of Scions had been purchased by customers new to Toyota and that 50 percent of buyers were under 35. These are Toyota’s figures for the stated period and customer populations. Toyota’s 2016 announcement also quoted Jim Lentz, then CEO of Toyota Motor North America: “This isn’t a step backward for Scion; it’s a leap forward for Toyota.”

Celica, MR2, and Yaris Verso: compact, but for different jobs

Toyota’s 1999 Frankfurt announcement shows how far the idea of a small Toyota could stretch beyond a hatchback. The redesigned Celica was a compact sports coupe with a 1.8-litre VVT-i engine; the new MR2 was an open-body, mid-engine two-seater with rear-wheel drive; and the Yaris Verso paired compact-car dimensions with rear seats that stowed under the floor. Toyota projected European releases for the Celica and Yaris Verso in fall 1999, and for the MR2 in spring 2000. Toyota’s Frankfurt Motor Show announcement describes these models and intended release timing.

Corolla: compact family car, not the smallest Toyota

The Corolla belongs in the story as a compact-family-car reference point, not as a synonym for the Starlet or Yaris. Toyota dates the seventh generation to June 1991 and describes it as growing in dimensions and taking on a more substantial, higher-grade character. The ninth generation launched in Japan in August 2000 as a four-door sedan and five-door wagon, with 1.3-, 1.5-, and 1.8-litre petrol engines among the options. Toyota’s Corolla generation history and its ninth-generation lineage show how the model differed in size and role from the smallest Toyotas.

How to make sense of the “small Toyota” label

“Small Toyota” is a useful umbrella, but it covers several categories rather than one class of car. The best way to compare the names is by what each was built to do, where it was sold, and how it was packaged—not by treating every model as a direct rival.

  • Small hatchback: Starlet, then the Vitz/Yaris family; Echo was a regional name for the first generation.
  • Other small-car line: Tercel/Corsa, with hatchback and drivetrain variations in Toyota’s Japanese-market history.
  • US subcompact and box-shaped car: Scion xA and xB, followed by the xD as the xA’s replacement.
  • Compact family car: Corolla sedan and wagon, larger in role and dimensions than the smallest hatchbacks.
  • Sporty or versatile formats: Celica coupe, mid-engine MR2 two-seater, and Yaris Verso with stow-away rear seats.

This is a selective history, not a complete global catalog or a measured popularity ranking. The model descriptions and company-reported milestones are drawn from Toyota’s histories and announcements, which are useful for chronology but should be understood as manufacturer accounts.
