2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata: the open-air, two-seat choice
Mazda lists a 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 181 hp. Sport and Club are manual-only, while Grand Touring can be ordered with a manual or six-speed automatic. Car and Driver places the Miata first in its 2026 affordable sports-car ranking and displays 29 mpg combined. The ranking’s price and fuel-economy figures are publisher-listed figures; confirm the exact trim and destination with Mazda before building a purchase budget. 2026 Toyota GR86: a rear-drive coupe with a small back seat
The GR86 gives you a fixed-roof coupe and 228 hp from a gasoline engine, with power sent to the rear wheels. Car and Driver praises its driver-focused, lightweight approach, but notes highway noise and rear seats too small for regular adult use. It lists cargo capacity at 6 cubic feet. 2026 Mazda3: the practical candidate, with a driving caveat
Mazda offers the Mazda3 as a sedan or hatchback, with a six-speed automatic or an available six-speed manual. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available on select trims. Mazda’s page records a May 2026 price revision: $24,650 for the sedan and $25,650 for the hatchback, excluding destination, taxes, and fees. Those figures supersede the earlier starting prices initially announced on the page. The configurations make the Mazda3 worth considering if you need compact-car practicality, but the available evidence does not establish that it belongs in a ranked list of the most fun cars. The title promises ten affordable gasoline cars, but current, model-specific evidence here does not support ten entries. An older Associated Press comparison published through Edmunds offers useful contrasts among previous versions of the Miata, GR86/BRZ, Civic Si, Volkswagen Golf GTI, and Ford Mustang. It characterizes the Civic Si as a manual with grip and precise handling alongside roomier rear seats, and the GTI as an entertaining hatchback with practical space. How to compare prices before you buy
- Check the exact model year and trim. A displayed entry price may describe different equipment from the car on a dealer’s lot.
- Add destination and other costs. Mazda’s revised Mazda3 figures explicitly exclude destination, taxes, and fees. The cited starting-price displays for the sports cars are not enough to calculate an out-the-door total.
- Match the powertrain to how you drive. The Miata’s Sport and Club trims require a manual; Grand Touring offers an automatic. Mazda3 buyers can choose an automatic or, where available, a manual.
