The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide names the Kia Niro FE hybrid as the fuel-economy leader in its small sport utility vehicle class, at 53 combined mpg. That is an EPA estimate for a specific version—not a promise of what every driver will get.
Which small SUV gets the best gas mileage in 2024?
In the guide’s small-SUV class, the 2024 Kia Niro FE hybrid leads with an estimated 53 mpg combined. The guide is published by the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Its small-SUV category covers vehicles under 6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), so this result follows a defined vehicle class rather than every model a shopper might casually call a small SUV.
The guide ranks vehicles by combined city and highway fuel economy, using an assumed mix of 55% city driving and 45% highway driving. It notes that engine size and trim can produce different ratings within a model. Check the exact model year, trim, engine and drivetrain before comparing vehicles; the Niro FE figure should not be generalized to every Niro configuration.
How the Niro compares with larger hybrid SUVs
An Associated Press-hosted Edmunds comparison gives useful context for two larger alternatives. The figures below are cited model-family maximums, not a trim-by-trim audit.

| 2024 hybrid SUV | Combined fuel economy | Drivetrain context |
|---|---|---|
| Kia Niro FE | 53 mpg, listed in the DOE/EPA small-SUV class guide | No AWD available, according to the AP/Edmunds comparison |
| Kia Sportage Hybrid | Up to 43 mpg, AP/Edmunds cited model-family maximum | Exact configuration should be checked |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | Up to 39 mpg, AP/Edmunds cited model-family maximum | Every RAV4 Hybrid has AWD, according to the comparison |
The Niro’s higher cited rating comes with a practical distinction: it does not offer AWD, while the AP/Edmunds comparison says all RAV4 Hybrids have it. If AWD is a requirement, compare the particular vehicle configurations available to you rather than choosing by the highest single mpg figure. Cargo needs and the kind of powertrain you want also matter.
What combined mpg does—and does not—tell you
Combined mpg is a standardized estimate that helps compare vehicles under a common driving mix. It is not a forecast of an individual driver’s mileage. Traffic, speed, weather, terrain, maintenance and driving habits can all affect the fuel economy a vehicle returns in use. A listed rating is most useful when comparing the same type of measure for the exact versions under consideration.

For perspective, the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends report highlights put average real-world fuel economy for all model-year 2024 new vehicles at 27.2 mpg. That fleet-wide average is context, not a direct small-SUV benchmark and not a prediction for a Niro or any other individual model.
Keep gasoline mpg separate from MPGe
MPG measures distance per gallon of liquid fuel. MPGe is an energy-equivalent measure used on labels for vehicles that do not use liquid fuel in the same way as conventional vehicles. It expresses how far a vehicle travels using energy equivalent to one gallon of gasoline; it is not gasoline mileage. The EPA explains the distinction in its electric-vehicle label guide. If you compare a plug-in or electric vehicle with a gasoline hybrid, keep the measures clearly labeled rather than treating MPGe as mpg.

How to check fuel economy on a used 2024 SUV
For a used vehicle, look up the label rating for its exact model year, make, model, engine and transmission using the EPA’s fuel-economy label guidance. The EPA says the original estimate remains the best indicator of average fuel economy over a typical 15-year vehicle life when the vehicle is properly maintained. The lookup helps avoid carrying a rating from one trim or powertrain over to a different one.
