Slate’s compact electric pickup has completed a demanding hot-weather development test near Davis Dam in Nevada, giving engineers evidence that its battery-cooling and cabin-air-conditioning systems can handle a steep, loaded climb. The result is encouraging—but it is not an EPA test, a consumer road test, an independent towing evaluation, or proof that production trucks are ready for every condition.
The summer 2025 run is best understood as a preproduction validation exercise. Slate drove early road-going prototypes up roughly 14 miles of climb near Laughlin, with grades reaching about 6 percent, extreme desert temperatures, a loaded truck, and a trailer attached. The company says the prototypes completed the climb as expected.

What Slate was actually testing
The headline visual is simple: a tiny electric truck climbing through Nevada desert heat while carrying a load and pulling against trailer resistance. The engineering objective was more specific. Slate wanted to see whether the truck’s battery thermal-management system and cabin air conditioning could keep temperatures under control during a sustained uphill run.

That distinction matters. Slate was not attempting to establish a towing record or demonstrate that the truck can haul at its maximum rating indefinitely in hot weather. Company comments reported by InsideEVs described the vehicle as being loaded to approximately its development limits, with the trailer and grade adding further resistance. The test therefore created a meaningful thermal challenge, but it should not be presented as a formal heavy-hauling endurance test. [c001][c005]

The prototypes reportedly completed the climb without an obvious thermal failure. That supports a measured conclusion: Slate has subjected early vehicles to a difficult real-world hot-weather scenario and obtained a successful development result.
Why finding problems is part of the point
Development testing is supposed to expose weaknesses before customers receive vehicles. Slate’s vehicle-integration lead said that discovering issues during testing is useful because engineers can identify the cause and correct it before production. [c001]
That is a more realistic way to interpret the Davis Dam run than treating it as a victory lap. A successful test is valuable, but it is one data point in a much larger validation program. Engineers still have to repeat testing across different temperatures, loads, battery states of charge, road surfaces, charging conditions, and production-intent components.

Every number in that table is a manufacturer estimate or specification subject to change. The 205-mile figure should be called projected or estimated range—not EPA-rated range. Slate’s documentation says the projection is based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle rather than an official EPA estimate. [c002][c003]
What the $24,950 Slate price includes
Slate’s FAQ lists the Blank Slate at $24,950 before destination charges, taxes, registration, documentation fees, and optional equipment. The stated destination charge is $1,450, which puts the vehicle at $26,400 before the other applicable costs if that charge remains unchanged. [c002][c004]

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →That headline price describes the base vehicle, not necessarily the version many buyers will ultimately configure. Slate’s strategy is to sell a deliberately minimalist platform that owners can personalize with accessories and body-style components.
The truck uses tactile controls instead of a central touchscreen. Slate also says the platform can be converted from a two-seat pickup into a five-seat SUV. Its June 2026 materials described a marketplace with more than 200 accessories, including roof racks, stereos, seat covers, and light covers; more than 80 percent were said to cost less than $500. [c002]
Charging considerations for prospective owners
The truck’s listed NACS connector and 11-kW onboard charger make home charging a practical ownership question, not merely a specification-sheet detail. Buyers considering a NACS EV charging cable should wait for final production-vehicle compatibility information and verify the cable’s amperage, connector configuration, and intended use. A generic cable should not be described as Slate-approved simply because the truck is listed with NACS charging.
Likewise, a home EV charger could make sense for an owner with suitable electrical service and overnight parking, but installation requirements depend on the home, the circuit, local rules, and the final vehicle’s charging specifications. The listed 11-kW onboard charger is the truck’s maximum AC intake—not a guarantee that every household installation will deliver that rate.

Modular design could be Slate’s real differentiator
Slate is not positioning the truck as a conventional, feature-heavy electric pickup. The company’s pitch is closer to a configurable vehicle platform: start with a small two-seat pickup, then add accessories or convert it into a five-seat SUV as needs change.

That approach could appeal to buyers who prefer physical controls, a compact footprint, and the ability to personalize a vehicle over time. It also creates questions that the company will need to answer in production: how much do conversion kits cost, how long does installation take, how do they affect payload and range, and which modifications can be performed by owners versus approved installers?
Slate’s planned accessory ecosystem includes Slate roof racks, wraps, seat covers, light covers, and SUV conversion kits. These are Slate’s own planned products or marketplace categories, not interchangeable proof that any third-party accessory will fit the production truck. Final mounting points, weight limits, software requirements, and warranty terms will matter.
Production is the next major test
Slate says its vehicles are designed in California and Michigan, engineered in Michigan, and intended to be assembled in Warsaw, Indiana. The production site is a repurposed former printing plant. According to Slate’s Warsaw materials, the company is tooling the facility so trucks can roll off the line later in 2026. [c007][c008]

Reservations, preorders, and the late-2026 target
Slate’s current preorder process is different from its earlier reservation program. The official preorder page says a $300 non-refundable preorder deposit secures a delivery-timing slot and is applied to the vehicle purchase price. Customers who previously paid the $50 reservation fee pay $250 toward the preorder instead. Slate says customers will select accessories and finalize the purchase as their delivery window approaches. [c010]
That deposit should not be confused with a refundable reservation. Prospective buyers should read the cancellation, refund, pricing, delivery, and configuration terms carefully before committing money.

Slate says first deliveries are expected or slated for late 2026, with its release materials specifying the fourth quarter of 2026. That is a company target, not a guaranteed delivery date. New-vehicle programs can encounter delays involving supplier readiness, regulatory approval, manufacturing validation, software, or quality control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety claims still need independent results
Slate’s safety materials describe intended safety technology and testing goals, but the dossier does not identify an independently awarded crash-test result. The truck should therefore be discussed in terms of its planned equipment and engineering objectives until results from an independent testing organization are published. [c006]
That caveat belongs alongside the thermal-test caveat. A prototype completing a hot-weather climb is encouraging evidence of development progress, but it does not certify the vehicle for sale or answer how the final truck will perform in a crash, after years of use, or under every operating condition.

What to watch before buying
- Final EPA figures: Look for official range and efficiency results rather than the current 205-mile projection.
- Production specifications: Confirm battery capacity, charging power, payload, towing capacity, curb weight, and dimensions on the final vehicle.
- Independent safety results: Check for published crash-test ratings and details of standard versus optional safety equipment.
- Real-world charging performance: Compare cold-weather, hot-weather, highway, and accessory-equipped range once customer vehicles are available.
- Conversion pricing: Determine the installed cost and weight, range, and warranty implications of the SUV kit and other accessories.
- Service coverage: Confirm where repairs, collision work, battery service, and software support will be available.
- Delivery terms: Distinguish a reservation from a non-refundable preorder and verify what happens if production timing or pricing changes.
Service and ownership support
Slate says it is building its service network with RepairPal certification and onboarding. That could help create repair access beyond a small number of company-operated locations, but the availability, geographic coverage, pricing, and final scope of the network still need to be established. Prospective buyers should treat RepairPal-certified Slate service as a planned support pathway rather than a guarantee that a qualified shop is already available nearby. [c011][c012]

Did Slate’s Nevada test prove the truck can tow 2,000 pounds in extreme heat?
No. The Davis Dam run placed the prototype under significant thermal stress with a load and trailer resistance, but Slate described it as a thermal-management test rather than a towing-endurance demonstration. It does not independently verify sustained towing at the truck’s 2,000-pound listed capacity.
Is Slate’s 205-mile range EPA-rated?
No. Slate’s materials describe 205 miles as an estimated or projected pickup range based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle. It is not an official EPA range rating.
How much does the Slate Truck cost?
Slate lists the Blank Slate at $24,950 before the $1,450 destination charge, taxes, registration, documentation fees, and optional equipment. Pricing and specifications are subject to change.
When will Slate deliver the first trucks?
Slate says first deliveries are expected or slated for late 2026, with its June 2026 materials pointing to the fourth quarter. That is a target, not a guaranteed delivery date.
Can the Slate Truck become an SUV?
Slate says its modular platform can be converted from a two-seat pickup into a five-seat SUV. Buyers will need to confirm final kit pricing, installation requirements, availability, weight, range, and warranty effects.
The Bottom Line
Slate’s Davis Dam test is a meaningful sign of engineering progress because it put preproduction trucks through real desert heat, a sustained climb, a load, and trailer resistance. It showed that the prototypes completed one demanding thermal-validation run without an obvious failure. It did not certify the final truck, establish EPA range, prove long-term durability, or guarantee towing performance.
The larger question is now execution. Slate still has to convert its $24,950 minimalist concept into a certified, serviceable production vehicle, complete factory tooling in Warsaw, publish final specifications and safety results, and begin customer deliveries on schedule. Late 2026 remains the company’s target—not a promise.
