Slate’s unusual idea is to sell a deliberately simple electric pickup first, then let buyers add equipment or convert it into an SUV. That may make the entry price more accessible, but it does not yet prove the finished vehicle will be inexpensive to build, own, or configure. Slate is still in preproduction, and there is no established single reason the rest of the industry has not offered this exact combination.
What Slate is building
Slate describes a two-door electric vehicle that starts as a two-seat pickup and can be equipped or converted as a five-seat SUV. The company calls the base vehicle the Blank Slate. Its pitch is less “a fully equipped truck for everyone” than “a basic vehicle you can adapt to your needs.”
Slate’s current FAQ lists the Blank Slate at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. Its June 24, 2026 release says SUV forms start at $29,950. These are company-announced prices, not evidence of delivered vehicles or final transaction prices; accessories and conversion equipment add to the cost.
Slate says first deliveries are expected in late 2026, also described as Q4 2026. The company says the vehicle remains in preproduction and that specifications may change.

What the announced specifications do—and do not—tell buyers
| Item | Slate’s announced figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | 65 kWh pack; 63 kWh usable | Slate’s June 24, 2026 release |
| Motor and output | Single rear-drive motor; 135 kW | Slate’s June 24, 2026 release |
| Pickup range | 205 miles projected | Slate says this approximates the EPA test cycle; it is not an official EPA estimate |
| Payload and towing | 1,550 lb payload; 2,000 lb towing | Slate projections; final specifications and independent testing are not established |
| Acceleration and top speed | Estimated 0–60 mph in 8 seconds; 90 mph top speed | Slate estimates and specifications, subject to change |
| Charging | NACS; 11 kW onboard charger | Slate’s June 24, 2026 release; it also lists 120V, 240V, and Tesla Supercharger charging options |
| Pickup dimensions | 174.6 in long; 70.6 in wide; 108.9 in wheelbase | Slate’s current FAQ |
| Bed and frunk | 5-ft bed, 35.1 cu ft; 7-cu-ft frunk | Slate’s stated dimensions and capacities; the company says the bed can take full sheets of plywood or sheetrock |
Range in daily use will depend on conditions including temperature, speed, load, accessories, charging behavior, and battery condition. Towing is especially important to evaluate against the actual trip: the announced 2,000-pound capacity is not a promise of a particular range while towing. Buyers with demanding hauling or towing needs should wait for final ratings and independent tests.
Why this approach is unusual—and where the risk sits
A lower starting price through a simpler vehicle
Slate says the truck uses tactile controls rather than a touchscreen and has fewer than half the parts of a typical truck. That is the company’s cost thesis: start with a simpler base vehicle, then avoid making every buyer pay upfront for features they may not want. The public specifications do not include audited manufacturing costs, expected margins, or achieved production volumes, so they cannot show whether that thesis works at scale.

Personalization moves some spending to later
The company describes optional pickup, Squareback SUV, Fastback SUV, Open Air, and Cargo configurations. It advertises more than 200 accessories and says over 80% cost less than $500. That makes the concept flexible, but the advertised base price is not necessarily the price of the vehicle a particular buyer wants. A useful comparison is the base price plus destination, the chosen body kit and accessories, and any charging or installation expenses that apply to that buyer. Without selecting specific products at their current prices, there is no sound basis for quoting a final equipped total.
Slate CEO Peter Faricy said in the company’s June 24, 2026 release: “Slate gives customers the freedom to buy only what they need today and personalize their vehicle as their needs change tomorrow.” The model therefore depends not just on the starting truck, but on the availability, price, installation, and support of the options customers later choose.

The unproven part is execution, not a documented industry prohibition
The available company material explains why Slate wants to build a modular, minimally equipped vehicle. It does not establish why other automakers have not pursued this precise mix of a small electric pickup, later SUV conversion, and broad accessories business. Nor does it show that Slate has resolved the challenges that may make the model difficult: delivering the base vehicle at its announced price, producing options customers value, and supporting conversions and repairs over time.
Slate reported more than 180,000 reservation holders in its June 24, 2026 release. That is a company-reported reservation count, not a count of completed purchases, deliveries, or proven demand at the final configured price.

What to check before treating it as a practical truck
Price the configuration you would actually use
Start with the $24,950 Blank Slate price and the separately listed $1,450 destination charge, then identify the exact SUV conversion or accessories you need. Slate lists SUV forms starting at $29,950, but the available information does not establish one universal price for a fully equipped build. Compare that total with other vehicles only after including the necessary equipment and fees.
Match range and charging to your routine
Slate lists 120V and 240V charging as well as Tesla Supercharger access, and its announced connector is NACS. A home Level 2 setup may be relevant for regular charging, but installation requirements and final production compatibility should be confirmed when the production vehicle details are available. The projected 205-mile pickup range should not be treated as an official EPA figure or as a guarantee for every route.

Separate capability claims from validated use
The 1,550-pound payload and 2,000-pound towing figures are projections. Payload, trailer weight, passengers, and cargo all matter to a real trip, while towing can reduce an EV’s range. Wait for final ratings and independent testing before relying on the truck for frequent heavy loads or long towing journeys.
Look for an awarded safety rating and proven service access
Slate lists traction control, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver and passenger airbags, side-curtain and seat-side airbags, a backup camera, pedestrian identification, and automatic high beams. The company says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP crash rating; that is a design goal, not an awarded rating.
Slate’s June 2026 release also says its warranty covers the battery and powertrain for 10 years or 110,000 miles, and that owners will have access to more than 3,000 RepairPal shops, including over 100 high-voltage EV service centers. Those are company statements; they do not establish independently audited network coverage or service outcomes in a particular owner’s area.
Who should be interested—and who should wait
The idea is most compelling for a buyer who wants a compact electric utility vehicle, can live with a basic two-seat starting configuration, and values adding only selected features over time. Its bed dimensions and the stated ability to carry full sheets of plywood or sheetrock point to local, practical tasks rather than proving suitability for every work-truck job.

It is harder to recommend today to someone who needs a certified range for a regular long commute, dependable towing range, a final crash rating, a particular five-seat layout, or a confirmed local repair option. Those questions depend on production vehicles and final information that Slate has not yet supplied. Once vehicles are delivered, the important comparison will be the actual configured price, usable range, capability, safety results, and service experience—not the novelty of the concept alone.
