It is designed to be personalized and can be converted into a five-seat SUV with optional kits. Slate expects first deliveries in Q4 2026, but whether Gen Z will buy it is still an open question: the available reservation figure has no age breakdown and is not a count of completed sales.
What is the Slate Truck?
Slate Auto’s Blank Slate is a rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with two seats, a single 135 kW rear-mounted motor and an interior Slate describes as deliberately simple. Its “retro” appeal is best understood as a design impression, not a measured consumer preference: Slate emphasizes tactile controls, a spare cabin and ways to change the vehicle’s appearance rather than a large built-in infotainment system.
Slate promotes using a phone or tablet as the primary controller. Buyers who want built-in Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, or who prefer a conventional touchscreen-centered cabin, should check the current equipment details and decide whether that trade-off suits them. Slate’s pitch is functional simplicity and customer customization, not a promise of a fully equipped mainstream interior.
Jeff Bezos’ family office backed Slate, according to TechCrunch’s launch coverage. That supports calling Slate Bezos-backed; it does not establish that Bezos runs the company or directs vehicle development. At its 2025 reveal, CEO Chris Barman said, “We are building the affordable vehicle that has long been promised but never been delivered.” The company’s business model pairs a lower listed starting price with a marketplace of customization options customers can add over time.

What is the Slate Truck price?
Slate’s 2026 FAQ lists the Blank Slate at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. That is not an all-in price: optional equipment, taxes and certain fees can add to the total. A pickup-to-SUV conversion and chosen accessories would also affect the configured cost. Check Slate’s live terms before placing an order because prices and options can change.
Slate says customers can order online rather than through traditional dealerships. Its FAQ distinguishes a $50 refundable reservation from a $300 preorder deposit, or $250 for an active reservation holder; the preorder deposit counts toward the purchase. These are separate steps and amounts, so confirm the current refund and ordering terms before paying.

When will the Slate Truck be available?
Slate says first deliveries are expected in Q4 2026. The company’s FAQ describes them as slated for late 2026. The truck remains preproduction, so timing, specifications and equipment may change; a reservation or preorder is not a delivery guarantee.
How far can the Slate Truck go?
Slate lists 205 miles of projected range. This is a company projection, not an official EPA estimate, and Slate says actual range varies with conditions and specifications. Treat it as an early planning figure rather than a verified result for a production vehicle. Whether it works for you depends on daily distance, access to charging and how often you need to make longer trips.

- Powder-Coated Steel for Long-Term Use: Black powder-coated finish helps resist rust, scratches and daily wear. Protective end caps help keep water, dust and debris out of the tubes, making this truck bed ladder rack durable for jobsite, farm, warehouse and outdoor hauling use.
Can the Slate Truck turn into an SUV?
Yes. Slate offers Squareback, Fastback and Open Air options that create five-seat SUV configurations. The company says a vehicle can be delivered already converted or changed later. The pickup starts with two seats; the five-seat layout depends on selecting a conversion option, not on the base configuration.
What can owners customize or install themselves?
Slate’s customization offer goes beyond choosing a paint color. Its site and FAQ describe wraps, decals, wheels, lighting and other accessories, as well as the body-style conversion kits. In its June 2026 announcement, Slate said its Marketplace would have more than 200 accessories, with more than 80% priced under $500, and that full vehicle wraps would cost under $500. These are company-published counts and prices, and inventory or pricing may change.

DIY wraps and accessories
Slate says owners can install a pre-cut wrap using a kit, tools and Slate U video instructions, order it pre-installed, or take the kit to a professional. The company cautions that its wraps use materials designed for its vehicles; wraps made for painted surfaces may not be compatible. A generic wrap or tool kit should not be treated as Slate-approved just because it is sold for DIY use.

Slate’s June 2026 announcement gives maximum towing capacity as 2,000 lb and payload capacity as 1,550 lb. These are company-published specifications for a preproduction vehicle. Buyers should compare them with the loads, trailer, passenger capacity and work use they actually need, and confirm final production specifications before relying on them.

Slate says the battery and powertrain warranty will be 10 years or 110,000 miles. It also says customers will have access to more than 3,000 RepairPal shops, including more than 100 service centers capable of high-voltage EV service. Those are company statements; coverage near a particular owner and the exact warranty terms should be verified before purchase. A projected service network is not, by itself, proof of local repair availability or future repair costs.
Will Gen Z buy the Slate Truck?
There is not enough public evidence to say. Axios reported on June 24, 2026, that Slate said it had more than 180,000 reservations. That is a company-reported reservation count, not completed purchases, and it is not broken out by age. It therefore does not show how many Gen Z buyers have reserved the truck or how many reservation holders will complete a purchase.
The design may appeal to buyers who value customization, hands-on projects and a comparatively spare interior. Those are plausible reasons someone might be interested, not evidence that Gen Z as a group prefers the truck. Slate’s 2025 launch materials said the company wanted to put customers ignored by the auto industry back in control; the product now expresses that idea through optional kits and a direct online sales model. Whether that proposition reaches younger buyers will depend on the final vehicle, full configured cost, delivery experience and ownership support as well as its style.
Quick Recap
How to decide if the Slate fits your needs
- Calculate the configured price. Start with the $24,950 listed vehicle price and $1,450 destination charge, then account for taxes, fees, any SUV kit and the accessories you would actually buy.
- Match the projected range to your driving. The 205-mile figure is not an EPA estimate. Consider daily mileage, charging access and how you handle longer journeys.
- Check the layout and carrying capacity. Decide whether a two-seat pickup meets your needs or whether a five-seat conversion is essential. Compare the company’s towing and payload figures with your real cargo and trailer requirements.
- Choose your preferred cabin experience. Tactile controls and phone- or tablet-based operation may suit someone seeking simplicity; a buyer who expects standard built-in infotainment may prefer a different approach.
- Verify support where you live. Read the final warranty and ask which nearby shops can service the vehicle before treating the announced network as a practical ownership advantage.
