Slate says owners can add accessories or convert it into a five-seat SUV. The contrast with Tesla is clearest in those product choices—not in a claim that the two brands’ vehicles are direct substitutes.
What Slate is selling—and what it costs
Slate announced a starting price of $24,950 for the base pickup on June 24, 2026. That advertised figure does not include taxes, title, license, registration, governmental fees, the $1,450 destination charge, documentation fees, or optional equipment, according to Slate’s ordering page and announcement. The final cost will therefore depend on the buyer’s location and chosen configuration.

Slate announced a $29,950 starting price for the Squareback SUV configuration. The company also says a truck can be converted into an SUV later. Those are announced starting prices, not a complete configured or out-the-door comparison with any Tesla; the sources do not establish a like-for-like Tesla configuration or final transaction price.

Slate says the Marketplace will offer more than 200 accessories, with over 80% priced below $500. These are figures from the company’s June 2026 release, not a guarantee of lasting inventory or pricing. Accessories can be selected at purchase or added later, according to Slate’s FAQ and release.

How the pickup can become an SUV
The vehicle’s central idea is to start with a two-seat pickup and adapt it as needs change. Slate lists three five-seat SUV conversion options: Squareback, Fastback, and Open Air. The Squareback also has its own announced $29,950 starting price; the available material does not establish prices for every conversion or accessory combination.
Slate frames this as an alternative to replacing the vehicle when a household’s needs change. In its FAQ, the company says: “When your needs change, you don’t need to buy a new truck, you can make your Slate into something new.” That is the manufacturer’s description of the modular concept, not evidence about conversion time, installation requirements, or total long-term cost.
A deliberately sparse cabin, unlike an equipment-rich EV
Slate describes the base pickup as having tactile controls and no touchscreen. The company also says it has no radio; its FAQ says the driver’s phone can serve as the primary controller and that Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is not needed. Axios likewise reported the company’s description of the vehicle as having no radio or touchscreen (Axios, June 24, 2026).

Slate’s FAQ puts its position this way: “When your phone is your primary controller, you don’t need CarPlay or Android Auto.” That explains the company’s design choice, but it does not mean a particular phone mount, audio system, or other accessory is included. Buyers comparing it with a Tesla should check the specific model and configuration rather than assume equipment or interface features are equivalent.
Range, motor, size, and carrying capacity
Slate currently lists a projected range of 205 miles. This is the company’s estimate based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle, not an official EPA range rating or an independently reported test result. Slate says it will provide the official estimate when available (FAQ; product information).

The dimensions and bed and frunk figures are from Slate’s FAQ; the payload figure is from its June 2026 release. Axios reported Slate’s claimed 2,000-pound towing capacity, but that is a company-reported claim rather than an independent test result (Axios).
Charging access and safety claims
Slate says the truck will use a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port and that Slate drivers will have access to Tesla Superchargers (Slate FAQ; charging information). The company says the included standard cable supports a household 120V outlet, and its site discusses 240V dryer outlets. The available details do not establish a specific charging speed or compatibility with every charging stall.
Slate lists traction control, electronic stability control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, airbags, and a backup camera among the safety equipment. The company says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP rating; that is an objective, not a rating already awarded (Slate FAQ; product information).

Delivery timing and what remains unconfirmed
Slate’s June 24, 2026 release forecast first deliveries for Q4 2026. The company describes the vehicle as preproduction and says details may change, so the delivery window and specifications should be treated as plans rather than confirmed production outcomes (release; product information).
Axios reported that Slate said it had more than 180,000 reservations as of June 24, 2026. That is a company figure reported by Axios, not an audited sales total or proof that all reservations will become purchases (Axios).

Who the Slate concept may suit
The Slate’s difference from a Tesla is not simply that it is a pickup. It is the choice to sell a sparse two-seat base vehicle and make added equipment and a five-seat body configuration part of an owner’s later choices. That concept may appeal to buyers who prioritize an adaptable small truck and are comfortable evaluating a projected range, a phone-centered cabin, and a product that is still preproduction.
It is a less obvious fit for someone who wants a fully equipped cabin from the outset or needs confirmed range, final production specifications, and a delivered vehicle now. The practical comparison depends on the use case: passenger space, standard equipment, carrying and towing needs, charging access, final configured cost, and delivery timing all matter more than a broad brand-versus-brand label.
