Slate Auto: Everything You Need to Know About the Bezos-Backed EV Startup is an American company preparing the two-seat, modular Slate Truck, a rear-wheel-drive electric pickup that can become a five-seat SUV. Jeff Bezos is reported to back Slate through his family office, but Slate is not established as an Amazon subsidiary; the truck starts at $24,950 before fees.

As of the August 13, 2026 research timestamp, Slate says the vehicle is still in preproduction, its specifications may change, and first deliveries are expected in Q4 2026. The most important facts are therefore current company claims and projections—not final EPA, crash-test, production, or ownership-cost results.

Key takeaways

  • Slate Auto is reported to be backed by Jeff Bezos through his family office, but the available evidence does not establish Slate as an Amazon subsidiary or Amazon vehicle brand.
  • Slate Auto’s official June 24, 2026 starting price is $24,950 for the base Slate Truck, before taxes, fees, destination, documentation charges, and optional equipment.
  • Slate estimates 205 miles of range for the Blank Slate Truck, but the figure is a projection based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle rather than an official EPA estimate.
  • The Slate Truck launches as a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup and can be ordered or converted into a five-seat Squareback or Fastback SUV.
  • Slate says the vehicle remains in preproduction and expects first deliveries in Q4 2026, so the published specifications and delivery timing can still change.

What is Slate Auto?

Slate Auto is an American electric-vehicle startup developing a deliberately simple, low-cost, customizable vehicle called the Slate Truck. The company’s approach combines a basic electric pickup with owner-installed accessories and conversion parts instead of packaging every feature into the vehicle at launch.

Slate operated quietly in Michigan before emerging publicly in April 2025. TechCrunch reported that the company had deep connections to Re:Build Manufacturing, that the vehicle was initially developed under the Re:Car project name within Re:Build, and that former Amazon personnel were involved. Those connections help explain why Slate is often described as Bezos-backed, but they do not make Slate an Amazon company.

Is Slate Auto owned by Amazon?

No. Slate Auto is reported to be financially backed by Jeff Bezos through his family office, but the available reporting does not establish corporate ownership by Amazon.

The most accurate descriptions are Bezos-backed, reported to be backed by Jeff Bezos, or funded through Bezos’s family office. Amazon-associated executives and a Bezos investment are different from Amazon owning Slate, selling the Slate Truck as an Amazon product, or operating Slate as an Amazon subsidiary. The distinction matters because Slate is a separate EV startup attempting to develop and manufacture its own vehicle.

TechCrunch’s reporting is the basis for the Bezos and Re:Build connection; it should not be expanded into a claim that Amazon corporate money, factories, ownership, or distribution are behind the Slate Truck.

What is the Slate Truck?

The Slate Truck is a modular, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup that can be ordered in pickup or SUV form and converted after purchase. Slate’s central idea is to sell a relatively bare vehicle and let owners add body panels, seating, storage, audio, lighting, and other equipment as their needs change.

Slate Auto’s announced vehicle forms and starting prices in 2026
Configuration Seating Starting price Purpose Conversion path
Blank Slate Truck Two seats $24,950 before fees and options Rear-wheel-drive electric pickup Base pickup form
Squareback SUV Up to five seats $29,950 before fees and options More enclosed, SUV-style configuration Can be ordered as an SUV or converted after purchase
Fastback SUV Up to five seats $29,950 before fees and options Fastback SUV-style configuration Can be ordered as an SUV or converted after purchase

The prices and conversion options in the table come from Slate Auto’s June 24, 2026 press release. The release says the truck can start as a pickup or SUV and that owners can change the configuration later, but final equipment, pricing, and compatibility details remain subject to the vehicle’s preproduction status.

Slate says the platform will support more than 200 accessories, including wraps, wheels, racks, lighting, seat covers, audio equipment, and storage-related components. According to the company’s 2026 product materials, more than 80% of the accessories are priced below $500. That does not mean every accessory is inexpensive or that the full catalog and final compatibility list are already available. Buyers researching Slate Truck accessories should verify whether each third-party product fits the launch vehicle’s final mounting points, electrical system, and body configuration.

How much does the Slate Truck cost?

The Slate Truck’s current official starting price is $24,950, but $24,950 is not an out-the-door price. Slate excludes taxes, title, license, registration, government fees, destination charges, documentation fees, optional equipment, and accessories from the headline figure.

Slate Auto’s June 24, 2026 release gives the $24,950 truck price and $29,950 SUV starting price. Slate’s purchase information describes the $300 preorder, the $250 amount for existing reservation holders, the non-refundable deposit policy, and the delivery-window process.

That distinction answers the question, “Is the Slate Truck really $25,000?” The truck’s advertised starting price is $24,950, which is close to $25,000, but the amount is a pre-fee starting price rather than the final amount a buyer will pay. Slate has not supplied a final total that includes every mandatory charge, and optional equipment can raise the cost.

Are Slate reservations the same as vehicle orders?

No. Slate reported more than 180,000 reservation holders as of June 24, 2026, but a reservation is not the same as a binding vehicle order, a completed purchase, or a delivered truck.

Slate CEO Peter Faricy said in the company’s June 24, 2026 release: “More than 180,000 reservation holders have told us they’re ready for a vehicle that’s affordable, reliable, and built around their lives.” The statement is a company description of reservation-holder interest, not an independent measurement of buyer intent or a guarantee that all reservation holders will purchase.

How far can the Slate Truck go, and what can it carry?

The Slate Truck has a company-projected range of 205 miles for the Blank Slate Truck, projected payload of up to 1,550 pounds, and projected towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds. Slate says the range estimate approximates the EPA test cycle and is not an official EPA-estimated range value.

Slate Truck specifications published or projected by Slate Auto in 2026
Specification Published or projected figure Qualification
Estimated range 205 miles Slate projection for the Blank Slate Truck; not an official EPA estimate
Drive system Rear-wheel drive Single rear-mounted motor configuration
Motor output 135 kW Officially listed rear-mounted motor output
Maximum payload Up to 1,550 pounds Company projection
Maximum towing Up to 2,000 pounds Company projection
Length 174.6 inches Officially listed vehicle dimension
Width 70.6 inches Officially listed vehicle dimension
Height 68 inches Officially listed vehicle dimension
Wheelbase 108.9 inches Officially listed vehicle dimension
Cargo bed 35.1 cubic feet Officially listed cargo-bed volume
Frunk 7 cubic feet Officially listed front-trunk volume

Slate Auto’s official FAQ lists the dimensions, cargo volumes, rear-wheel-drive layout, and 135-kW motor. Slate’s 2026 release supplies the 205-mile projection, payload, and towing figures. Because the Slate Truck is still in preproduction, Slate says the specifications may change before production and certification.

The 205-mile number should therefore be used for early comparison, not as a promise of real-world range. Final EPA range, efficiency data, battery details, charging times, and independent performance testing were not established in this research pass. Weather, speed, payload, towing, wheels, accessories, and the final production configuration could also affect real-world range, but no Slate-specific test result quantifying those effects is available here.

Does the Slate Truck have a touchscreen?

No. The Slate Truck does not include conventional built-in touchscreen infotainment; Slate intends the owner’s phone to provide the main apps and controls, with optional phone, tablet, and portable-audio accessories filling roles handled by integrated systems in many other EVs.

Slate Truck cabin technology
Feature Slate’s published approach What the owner should expect
Infotainment screen No conventional built-in touchscreen system The owner supplies a phone or tablet for apps and display functions.
Phone use Phone mounting and charging The phone is intended to be the primary controller.
Tablet use Accessory bracket for a large tablet Tablet availability and final accessory compatibility should be checked before purchase.
Audio portable Bluetooth speaker or accessory-audio options A portable Bluetooth speaker can provide audio, but Slate has not approved a specific model in the available material.
Climate control Heating and air conditioning with analog controls Heat and air conditioning remain included without requiring a touchscreen.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Slate says they are unnecessary because the phone or tablet supplies the apps The experience is phone-centered rather than a factory-integrated interface.

Slate says built-in systems add cost, can become outdated, and may have high failure rates. The trade-off is straightforward: the Slate Truck may avoid the cost and aging problem of a dedicated infotainment computer, but the owner becomes more dependent on a personal device, a mount, charging hardware, and separate audio equipment. The details come from Slate’s official FAQ.

How do you charge the Slate Truck?

Slate says the Slate Truck can charge from a regular 120-volt wall outlet, a 240-volt dryer outlet, or Tesla Superchargers. The company’s charging information makes ordinary household charging possible, while faster public charging is intended for compatible high-power networks.

Slate’s announced charging routes
Charging route What Slate says Practical qualification
120-volt wall outlet Supported Useful where no dedicated charging circuit is available; Slate has not published a charging-time figure here.
240-volt dryer outlet Supported Uses an existing higher-voltage household outlet where suitable; installation and outlet condition must be handled safely.
Tesla Superchargers Slate says its charging message includes access to 29,000 Tesla Superchargers across the country Access should be treated as a current company claim subject to market, adapter, vehicle, and network terms.
Wallbox Supernova equipment Wallbox was reported to supply 180-kW chargers for Slate’s Warsaw, Indiana facilities This is a facility-level charging relationship, not proof that every owner receives a Wallbox charger or that the Slate Truck charges at 180 kW.

Slate’s official product page describes the 120-volt, 240-volt, and Tesla Supercharger options and makes the 29,000-site statement. A 240-volt home EV charger could be a useful convenience for an owner who wants faster home charging, but Slate does not state that a dedicated home charger is required.

Cinco Días reported in 2026 that Wallbox would supply 180-kW Supernova chargers for installation at Slate’s Warsaw facilities. The report should not be interpreted as a consumer charging specification, a home-charger recommendation, or proof of a universal public-charging guarantee.

Can you repair the Slate Truck yourself?

Slate is designing the Slate Truck for more owner service than many modern vehicles, but Slate does not say that every repair is safe for consumers. The company says panels can be swapped, parts are accessible, manuals are free, and Slate U will provide free video and written instructions.

Slate’s four-level repair boundary
Skill level Who Slate classifies as able to perform the work Key limitation
Level 1 DIY owner Slate identifies Levels 1–3 as DIY work; exact procedures depend on the final service information.
Level 2 DIY owner Still within the company’s stated DIY range.
Level 3 DIY owner Still within the company’s stated DIY range, but owners should follow the official instructions and safety procedures.
Level 4 Professional service partner Restricted to professionals and includes high-voltage and other advanced procedures.

The important safety boundary is that high-voltage work is not being presented as ordinary consumer DIY. Slate’s Slate U service and education page describes the four-level system, with Levels 1–3 considered DIY and Level 4 reserved for professional service partners. Owners looking for Slate repair information should use the company’s final manuals and service network rather than assuming that accessible parts make every repair safe.

Slate’s FAQ also says the truck should not be flat-towed because flat towing can damage the battery and electric motors. The recommended recovery method is a flatbed trailer. That restriction is especially important for owners choosing roadside assistance or planning to tow a disabled Slate Truck.

Public emergence April 2025 Technology reporting brought the Bezos-backed startup and its Re:Build connection into public view.
Preorder portal opens June 24, 2026 Slate moved from the earlier reservation process to a preorder process with a deposit and delivery window.
First deliveries Expected in Q4 2026 Slate’s current target; specifications and timing remain subject to change.

Slate’s June 24, 2026 company release says the vehicle remains in preproduction and that first deliveries are expected in Q4 2026. TechCrunch’s April 2026 overview also described Slate as working toward late-2026 production while noting the hurdles faced by a new automaker.

Is the Slate Truck a real vehicle or just a concept? The best answer is that Slate has a defined vehicle program, official projected specifications, an announced preorder system, and a delivery target, but it is not yet a completed production vehicle in the evidence available for this article. The research timestamp is August 13, 2026, and no authoritative source in this research pass verifies full-scale production or completed customer deliveries by that date.

What safety and ownership information is still unknown?

Several important ownership facts cannot yet be treated as settled because the Slate Truck is still in preproduction.

  • EPA range: The 205-mile figure remains Slate’s projection, not a final EPA-certified value.
  • Crash testing: Slate says the vehicle is designed to achieve a five-star USNCAP crash rating, but that is a target rather than a completed crash-test result.
  • Production and deliveries: A confirmed production start and verified first customer deliveries were not established in the research pass.
  • Accessory compatibility: Slate’s final catalog, prices, and compatibility details may change before launch.
  • Ownership costs: Independent data for insurance pricing, maintenance costs, tax-credit eligibility, and resale value was not identified.
  • Final specifications: Slate says preproduction specifications may change, so buyers should not treat early figures as final certification data.

The safety target appears in Slate’s FAQ and its 2026 release. A target should not be written as a five-star rating, and the absence of independent range, crash, maintenance, insurance, or resale data is a reason to wait for final production evidence before making a firm ownership calculation.

Is the Slate Truck worth waiting for?

The Slate Truck is most compelling for a buyer who values a low published entry price, a simple two-seat pickup, modular SUV conversion, owner customization, and the possibility of handling routine work personally. The same design is less attractive for a buyer who needs proven EPA range, an integrated touchscreen, completed crash results, established service coverage, or immediate availability.

Slate Truck decision framework
If your priority is… Slate’s published approach What to verify before committing
Low upfront price $24,950 starting price for the base truck, before fees and options Final destination, documentation, government, registration, tax, and equipment costs
Customization More than 200 announced accessories, with more than 80% reported below $500 Final catalog, compatibility, availability, and total accessory cost
Passenger flexibility Two-seat pickup with Squareback and Fastback paths to up to five seats Final conversion pricing, installation requirements, cargo effects, and delivery timing
Simple technology No built-in touchscreen; phone, tablet, and portable-audio approach Personal-device mounting, charging, audio, weather protection, and software convenience
Useful truck capability Projected 1,550-pound payload, 2,000-pound towing, 35.1-cubic-foot bed, and 7-cubic-foot frunk Final certified capacities and the effect of payload or towing on range
Owner repairability Accessible parts, swappable panels, free manuals, and Levels 1–3 DIY instruction Local professional support for Level 4 and high-voltage work
Near-term ownership Preproduction vehicle with first deliveries expected in Q4 2026 Confirmed production start and actual customer delivery records

The Slate Truck is not simply a cheap conventional pickup with a missing screen. Slate is making several deliberate compromises: a small cabin at launch, phone-centered technology, projected rather than certified specifications, and an accessory-based ownership model. Those compromises could reduce upfront complexity and support personalization, but they place more responsibility on the buyer to verify final equipment, charging arrangements, service access, and delivery timing.

What should a potential buyer do next?

  1. Separate the headline price from the real budget. Start with $24,950 for the truck or $29,950 for an announced SUV configuration, then wait for final taxes, destination, documentation, registration, equipment, and accessory costs.
  2. Treat 205 miles as a projection. Do not plan towing, winter travel, or daily charging around a final EPA number until certification is available.
  3. Choose the body configuration carefully. Decide whether the two-seat pickup meets the need or whether the Squareback or Fastback conversion path is more appropriate.
  4. Plan the cabin technology. Budget for the owner’s phone or tablet, a secure mount, charging, and audio equipment if a factory infotainment system is important to you.
  5. Confirm charging before delivery. Check whether a 120-volt outlet is adequate, whether a suitable 240-volt circuit is available, and how Tesla Supercharger access will work for the final vehicle and market.
  6. Know the repair boundary. Use Slate U and official manuals for Levels 1–3 work, and use professional service partners for Level 4 and high-voltage procedures.
  7. Wait for production evidence. Confirm final specifications, EPA certification, crash-test results, accessory compatibility, and customer deliveries before treating the vehicle as a proven production option.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Slate Auto is a separate, Bezos-backed EV startup—not an Amazon subsidiary—developing a modular electric pickup with a $24,950 published starting price, projected 205-mile range, and SUV conversion options. The concept is unusually simple and repair-oriented, but the truck remains in preproduction, so final specifications, certification, ownership costs, and Q4 2026 delivery timing still need verification.
