Skyryse says a company-equipped Robinson R66 completed an automated autorotation from altitude to the ground on July 22, 2023. The demonstration showed a system managing an emergency landing maneuver after power failure; it does not establish that the system is certified for routine use, available to operators, or able to handle every aircraft or emergency.
What the reported test demonstrated
A November 10, 2023 report by HeliHub, citing Skyryse, says the company completed its first full altitude-to-ground automated autorotation in a Robinson R66 fitted with Skyryse technology. The flight test took place at a Los Angeles-area facility on July 22, 2023. HeliHub also reported Skyryse’s claim that it had completed dozens of automated autorotations by the time of publication. These are company-reported details, not independently audited results. HeliHub’s report is the substantive account available here.
Skyryse described its system as a proprietary, highly automated flight-control system with redundant controls and sensors. According to that account, it detects power failure and manages successive phases of the maneuver: entry, descent, alignment and stability, flare, and landing. The report says the sequence can be initiated with a button press. Those capabilities describe Skyryse’s account of its test system, not a general feature of helicopters.
How a helicopter can land after engine failure
Autorotation is an emergency maneuver that lets a helicopter descend and land after engine power is lost. The rotor continues turning as the aircraft descends, allowing the pilot to control the descent and flare for landing. The Skyryse demonstration was about automating control of this maneuver after a power failure. “Without power” in the headline should not be read as meaning the aircraft has no energy or that every onboard power source has failed.

What “world-first” does—and does not—mean
The report presents “world-first” as a claim attributed to Skyryse and says Guinness World Records certified a record for the first automated autorotation landing by rotorcraft. The underlying Guinness record entry or certification documentation is not included in that report, so the claim should remain attributed. It does not establish that Skyryse created the first autonomous helicopter, or that a regulator certified the system for operational use.

The available account is dated November 2023. It does not establish whether the production-helicopter reveal that Skyryse forecast for the following first quarter took place, what configuration may have followed, whether a regulator has approved the system, or whether operators can buy or use it today. The demonstrated installation was proprietary Skyryse technology on a test Robinson R66; the report does not establish a retrofit option or compatibility with other helicopters.
