Its 1.4-litre petrol-electric powertrain is smooth and has ample performance, but the battery reduces luggage space and the plug-in system may not justify its price if you rarely charge. The key trade-off is everyday electric use versus a smaller boot and potentially better-value Octavia alternatives.
What is the 2021 Octavia iV?
This review covers the fourth-generation, 2021 Octavia iV plug-in hybrid, not the sportier Octavia RS iV or later model-year versions. It pairs a 1.4 TSI petrol engine with an electric motor, a 13 kWh high-voltage battery and a six-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Škoda’s September 2020 launch figures list system output of 150 kW (204 PS) and 350 Nm of torque. Škoda’s launch announcement also claimed up to 60 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle.
That 60 km figure is an official launch-era test-cycle claim, not a promise of the distance every 2021 car will cover in everyday driving. Actual electric range varies with configuration and conditions; the available figures do not establish one universal real-world range.
How does it drive?
In its 16 April 2021 road test, Auto Express reviewer John McIlroy judged the transition between hybrid operation to be very smooth and found performance sufficient in Normal mode. The combination gives the Octavia iV the potential to handle routine trips electrically while retaining a petrol engine for journeys when the battery’s charge is depleted.

That smoothness is a strength, but it does not make the plug-in system the automatic choice for every buyer. The practical advantage depends on having a convenient charging routine; without regular charging, the case for choosing the iV over another Octavia powertrain weakens.
Charging: what routine does it need?
Škoda’s 2020 launch material estimated a full charge at about five hours from an ordinary household socket, or three hours and 33 minutes using a 3.6 kW wallbox. These are manufacturer-stated charging times, not a guarantee for every installation or charging condition. Škoda says each method requires its own cable type; check the car’s requirements and your local supply before buying a cable or arranging a charger. - Home or workplace charging available: plugging in between trips makes the electric capability more useful.
- No reliable place to charge: you are less likely to realize the benefit of the plug-in system, so compare the iV carefully with other Octavia engines.
- Journeys vary in length: treat the official WLTP range as a comparison figure, not a forecast for a particular commute or season.
How much boot space do you lose?
Škoda’s current model information lists luggage capacity of 450 litres for the Octavia iV hatchback and 490 litres for the Combi estate. These figures should be checked against the exact 2021 body style and market, since current model information is not a substitute for a dated specification sheet. Auto Express noted that the hatchback iV has less capacity than the non-hybrid hatchback and lacks a variable-height boot floor.

If you regularly carry bulky luggage, a pushchair or family holiday loads, check the actual car in person with your usual items. The published litre figure alone does not show how the boot shape, floor or loading height will work for your needs.

Is the Octavia iV good value?
The answer depends on what you will use. The iV’s electric operation can make sense for a driver who charges frequently and has journeys that fit the car’s electric capability. If you cannot charge consistently, or if boot space is a priority, the plug-in hardware may be a poor trade for the advantages you would actually receive.
Auto Express’s John McIlroy concluded in April 2021 that other Octavia variants could be better value and that many could come close to matching the iV for real-world running costs. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal cost comparison: purchase prices, equipment, fuel and electricity costs, tax treatment and incentives depend on country and individual use. Compare the price and specification of the exact cars available in your market rather than assuming a plug-in hybrid will save money.

Should you buy a 2021 Octavia iV?
- It is a stronger fit if you have dependable home or workplace charging, want electric running for suitable routine trips, and can live with less luggage capacity than a comparable non-hybrid Octavia.
- Look closely at other Octavias if charging would be occasional, the boot needs to handle bulky family cargo, or the iV’s price premium is hard to justify against the alternatives in your market.
- Before choosing one, verify the model year and body style, compare local purchase prices and equipment, confirm charging compatibility, and test the boot with your normal loads.
