What changed—and when
The reform links a registration mark to the vehicle owner’s Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC), rather than treating the mark as something that necessarily stays with the vehicle. Business Recorder reported that an owner can retain the mark after selling a vehicle and transfer it to a later vehicle.
Keep the dates distinct: Sindh’s cabinet approved the proposal in principle in August 2025, as reported on August 7, 2025. The reported enforcement date was February 16, 2026. What the law and reporting establish
The Provincial Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2024 amended the framework covering number-plate series, registration, and the sale or transfer of vehicle ownership. Its text says: “The sale and transfer of any motor vehicle registered under this Chapter shall be in such manner as may be prescribed by the Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control Department, Government of Sindh.” The Act was published in the 2025 Gazette. The practical point reported for the CNIC-linked reform is retention of the mark by the owner after a sale, with the option to use it on a later vehicle. The law’s quoted provision refers to prescribed procedures for vehicle sale and transfer, but the official materials located do not set out the general application steps for retaining or reallocating an ordinary registration mark.
Can you keep your number plate after selling your car?
Reporting on the February 2026 enforcement says the owner may keep the registration mark and transfer it to a later vehicle. That does not establish that every existing plate is transferred automatically, or that keeping a mark happens without a request or other formalities. Confirm the current rules with Sindh Excise before completing a sale or registering another vehicle.

How to check a vehicle or plate through Sindh Excise
Sindh Excise’s online services include vehicle verification, verification by CNIC, and a number-plate status checker. These are useful for checking records and plate progress; the available pages do not say that an online lookup completes a mark-retention or transfer application. Sindh Excise online services.
- For vehicle verification, use the department’s official vehicle-verification service and enter the details it requests.
- For a CNIC-based lookup, select the official verification-by-CNIC service and follow its prompts.
- To check plate progress, open the number-plate status checker, select the vehicle category, and enter the registration number. The page reports stages including requested, printed, and handed over. Number-plate status checker.
These checks do not replace the department’s instructions for retaining or reallocating a mark. The exact procedure and any applicable time limit should be confirmed directly with current Sindh Excise guidance.

Registration mark, vehicle record, and premium plates are different
A registration mark is not the vehicle itself or its full registration record. Sindh Excise describes registration as mandatory and says it provides proof of ownership; the department’s overview describes issuance of a registration number, registration book, and plate. Ordinary CNIC-linked retention is also distinct from the separate premium or personalized number-plate scheme. That scheme has its own official standard operating procedure, including CNIC linkage and separate rules. What to confirm before you sell or register another vehicle
- Ask Sindh Excise how to request retention of your ordinary registration mark and what documents or steps are required.
- Confirm whether the rule applies to your existing mark and vehicle, and whether a deadline or eligibility condition applies.
- Check how the vehicle’s ownership transfer and its registration record must be completed separately from mark retention.
- Use the official verification and plate-status services for record checks, not as proof that a retention application has been filed or approved.
