A headlight-on buzzer can warn you when you leave the lights on after switching off the ignition. A 2012 Hackaday project built for one Series III Land Rover used a normally closed relay and a buzzer to do that. The article describes the circuit’s basic behavior, but not a complete schematic or installation instructions, so it should be treated as a historical example—not a wiring plan for other vehicles.
How the Land Rover reminder works
In Mike Nathan’s April 11, 2012, account, the Land Rover owner had repeatedly left the headlights on and later needed jump-starts. The car did not have the reminder chime he wanted, so he built a simple alarm. Hackaday’s overview says it connects a normally closed relay and a buzzer with the headlights and ignition.
With the key in the ignition and the headlights on, the relay is energized and open, keeping the buzzer silent. When ignition power is removed while the lights remain on, the relay closes and the buzzer sounds. This explains the intended trigger, not the circuit’s detailed wiring or electrical ratings. Read the Hackaday project write-up.
What happens if you leave your headlights on?
With the engine off, headlights draw power from the vehicle’s battery. Leave them on long enough and the battery may no longer have enough charge to start the car. A Honda owner’s manual excerpt warns that headlights left on with the engine off can rapidly discharge the battery; the actual outcome depends on the vehicle and circumstances, and the source gives no universal time or drain estimate. See the Honda owner’s manual excerpt.

- 【Car Light Off Warner Control Buzzer Beeper 12V Adapter Cable】
- - Never forget to switch off the lights in your car with the light alarm from Adapter-Universe.
- - Warner emits a humming/buzzing sound to remind you if the lights are still switched on after removing your car key.
- - Multiple options for attaching the control buzzer: fuse box, driver's door, or any convenient place.
- - Easily attach the Warner with screws or tape ( strips not included).
A reminder can help prevent the oversight, but it is not a substitute for switching off the lights or following the vehicle’s operating instructions.
Ways to get a lights-on reminder
| Option | How it triggers | Installation and dependency |
|---|---|---|
| DIY relay-and-buzzer circuit | Headlights remain on after ignition power is removed. | Requires vehicle wiring knowledge. The 2012 project was built for one Series III Land Rover; compatibility with other vehicles is not established. Hackaday. |
| Removable key reminder | A tethered hook and key holder are intended to prompt the driver to switch off the lights before removing the key. | The documented concept does not alter vehicle wiring. The patent record documents a design, not a currently available or proven product. US Patent 4,653,422. |
| Built-in vehicle reminder or lighting feature | Depends on the vehicle. Honda describes an audible reminder under a particular key, door, and headlight-switch state; Chevrolet describes a lamps-on indicator and notes that some vehicles have automatic-light settings. | Availability and operation depend on make, model, and configuration. Check the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle. Honda manual; Chevrolet support. |
| Community-reported app alert | A nearby person scans a QR code or license plate and reports a visible concern, such as headlights left on. | Depends on another person noticing and reporting the issue; it is not automatic headlight sensing. Winkplate listing. |
Could you build the buzzer circuit for another car?
The project establishes that the idea was used on one Series III Land Rover, not that its circuit suits other vehicles. The published overview does not provide a full schematic, component ratings, installation steps, or modern-vehicle compatibility advice. Vehicle electrical systems and lighting controls vary, so the description is not enough to safely guide a wiring modification.

- IT NEVER HURTS TO HAVE AN EXTRA DETERRENT! - Designed to deter those with malicious intentions, this fake car alarm light keeps potential thieves guessing and acts as a strong visual deterrent. Add an extra layer of security to your vehicle.
- SOLAR-POWERED SECURITY LIGHT - The upgraded car false alarm light is powered by solar energy and will automatically charge in the sun. It can blink all night long after getting enough sunlight during the day. Note: This LED does not blink when there is sufficient light. If you want it to blink during the day, just partially cover the other end.
- DUAL CHARGING CAPABILITIES - In addition to solar power, this analog alarm light features a convenient USB charging port for backup power during overcast or rainy days. Built-in light sensor, intelligently senses the intensity of light. It blinks every 5 seconds when the switch is on and the light is dim. Just turn off the switch if you don't want it to work.
- SIMPLE INSTALLATION - Featuring strong double-sided tape on the bottom, this light can be effortlessly mounted on various surfaces such as the Rearview Mirror, Center Console, Car Door, or Rear Window. Ensure the surface is clean and dry before installation for optimal adhesion.
- PACKAGE INCLUDED - Package includes 2 dummy alarm lights(red light). Choose between red or blue light specifications based on your preference. Should you have any questions or require assistance, our responsive customer service team is available to address your inquiries promptly.
If you are researching generic components, “12V automotive buzzer relay” is a search phrase—not a validated kit or assurance that any particular parts will fit. Do not choose or wire components based on the brief project summary alone; get vehicle-specific guidance from a qualified automotive electrician or a reliable service source for your exact model.
