Siemens and OMV Open First SICHARGE FLEX EV Charging Site in Austria

Siemens and OMV’s first commercial SICHARGE FLEX site opened in Kufstein, Austria, with six initial points rated up to 400 kW each. The 1.68 MW figure is the system family’s maximum, not the output of each charger.

Siemens and OMV’s first commercial SICHARGE FLEX charging installation began operating on 29 September 2026 at an OMV station in Kufstein, Austria. The site has six initial charging points, each rated up to 400 kW. The headline figure of 1.68 MW is the maximum power-unit output Siemens lists for the system family—not the output available at each Kufstein charger.

Where the first SICHARGE FLEX system is operating

The installation is at an OMV station in Kufstein on the Brenner transport corridor between Germany and Italy. Siemens announced the deployment on 30 September 2026 and described it as the system’s first commercial deployment. The location is intended to serve freight traffic as well as passenger cars. Siemens says the site includes showers, restaurants and washing machines for truck drivers.

OMV has ordered SICHARGE FLEX systems for additional locations in Austria. In its announcement, Siemens said delivery and commissioning were scheduled for the coming months; that was a forward-looking schedule as of 30 September 2026, not confirmation that those sites are now operating. (Siemens, 30 September 2026)

What is installed now—and what the 1.68 MW figure means

Siemens’ 2025 launch announcement gives the SICHARGE FLEX system family a power-unit output range of 480 kW to 1.68 MW DC. That is system-level capacity, which can be dynamically distributed among connected vehicles; it is not a per-vehicle charging rate. The Kufstein site’s initial configuration is six points: four for passenger cars and two for trucks, each described by Siemens as capable of up to 400 kW.

Kufstein configuration Status Power and connector details
Four passenger-car points Initial installation Up to 400 kW per point; Siemens’ announcement does not specify a connector for each Kufstein point.
Two truck points Initial installation Up to 400 kW per point; Siemens’ announcement does not specify a connector for each Kufstein point.
Four additional truck points Planned later phase 600–1,200 kW via MCS, according to Siemens.

Siemens’ 2025 system announcement lists support for CCS and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS), and says one system can have up to four MCS points. It also specifies up to 1,500 A at an MCS dispenser. The four planned Kufstein truck points are explicitly described as MCS; the initial points should not be assumed to have the same connector configuration. (Siemens, 4 October 2025; Siemens, 30 September 2026)

How power sharing and truck charging work

SICHARGE FLEX allocates power dynamically among connected vehicles according to demand, Siemens says. This means the maximum system output and the rate an individual vehicle receives are different measures: the system can distribute available power across active charge points, while a vehicle’s actual rate depends on its charging session and the system’s allocation. The published figures do not establish the charging rate that every vehicle will experience at every moment.

Siemens gives an illustrative estimate of about 45 minutes to charge a truck with a 620-kWh battery from 20% to 80%. That is a company-published example, not an independently verified result or a guarantee for all trucks, batteries, temperatures, or charging conditions. Why the Brenner location matters

The Brenner route is a major transport corridor linking Germany and Italy, and Siemens says its strategic position was a reason for choosing Kufstein. High-power truck charging along a freight route addresses a different need from depot charging: drivers need charging options along journeys, alongside facilities that make a stop more practical. OMV’s Peter Vysny, VP of International Operations & eMobility, said: “Heavy-duty electric vehicles, in particular, require powerful and reliably available charging options along major transportation routes.”

The project also illustrates the distinction between a product launch and a working deployment. Siemens introduced the SICHARGE FLEX system family in October 2025; the Kufstein installation became its first commercial operation in September 2026. Siemens’ Markus Mildner, CEO of Siemens eMobility, described the system as “a scalable solution that can be precisely configured for a variety of use cases – from logistics depots to public charging facilities for cars and trucks.” Both statements are company perspectives; the published deployment announcement does not establish independent reliability or operating-performance results.

  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

What to watch as the site expands

  • Four planned MCS truck points: Siemens specifies 600–1,200 kW for each of the four planned additions, but described them as a later phase rather than points already open.
  • Additional Austrian sites: OMV has ordered more systems, while the timing Siemens gave was a schedule for the coming months as of its 30 September 2026 announcement.
  • Real-world operating data: Publicly stated capacity and an illustrative charging time do not by themselves show how often chargers are used, how reliably they operate, or what rates vehicles receive across actual sessions.
