U.S. wholesale prices eased in mid-September 2026, but that trend does not guarantee lower retail prices for a specific car next month.
What the latest used-car market data says
Cox Automotive reported that its seasonally adjusted Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index (MUVVI) stood at 206.2 in the first half of September 2026, down 1% from August and 0.4% from September 2025. The index tracks wholesale prices adjusted for vehicle mix, mileage, and seasonality; it is not a retail price quote or a forecast for an individual car. Wholesale days’ supply was 27.8 days as of September 15, about 2.4 days higher than a year earlier. These figures point to some easing in wholesale conditions, not a guaranteed discount for shoppers. Movement also differs by vehicle type. In mid-September, compact cars and EVs were the only major segments with wholesale values above year-earlier levels; larger, less fuel-efficient segments were lower. In August, compact cars and EVs were relatively resilient while pickups and SUVs trended down. A national index cannot tell you whether a particular model is getting cheaper in your area, so compare similar cars by model, age, mileage, and condition in your local market.
Consumer Reports’ search-indexed result attributed an average U.S. dealer listing price of $27,028 in July 2026 to Cox Automotive. That figure is an indexed claim, and listing averages are not transaction prices or a measure of your local market. Consumer Reports’ used-car market result

When buying now makes sense
- You need transportation, or keeping your current vehicle carries meaningful repair, safety, or reliability risks.
- You have found a car that suits your needs and passes an independent pre-purchase inspection.
- The out-the-door price, including fees and taxes, fits your budget.
- You have compared financing offers and are comfortable with the APR, loan term, and total interest.
If a suitable car meets those conditions, a market-wide price trend is not a reason by itself to delay. The cost of waiting may include ongoing repairs, unreliable transportation, or the practical cost of being without a needed vehicle.
When waiting makes sense
- Your current vehicle is reliable and the purchase is optional.
- More time would let you build a down payment or improve your credit readiness.
- You need time to compare more candidates or no inspected car currently fits your budget.
Set a personal milestone for deciding again—such as reaching a savings target or finding a car that meets your inspection and price requirements. Waiting solely because you assume all used-car prices will fall is a bet, not a plan.

Compare the full cost of buying versus waiting
For each candidate, compare the car’s cost and condition with the cost and risk of keeping your current vehicle or delaying a needed purchase. Use actual offers and local listings rather than a national average.
| What to compare | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Out-the-door price | What is the final price after taxes, fees, and any required charges? |
| Condition and fit | Do age, mileage, condition, and independent inspection results justify the price? |
| Local alternatives | How does it compare with similar cars in your area? |
| Financing | What are the APR, down payment, loan term, and total interest across your preapproval offers? |
| Ownership costs | What maintenance and insurance costs should you expect? |
| Cost of delay | What repairs, safety concerns, or transportation costs could arise if you keep your current vehicle or wait? |
Compare loan offers, not just monthly payments
Request preapproval offers and compare the APR, term, down payment, and total interest for the actual buyer and candidate car. A lower monthly payment can come from a longer loan term while increasing the total interest paid. A market index or a study’s sample rates cannot predict the offer an individual buyer will receive.

A 2026 Federal Reserve staff note illustrates how much financing can differ by lender and borrower type. In the note’s loan sample, covering observations from the first quarter of 2018 through the third quarter of 2025, weighted average derived interest rates were 25.39% for subprime buy-here-pay-here (BHPH) loans and 5.65% for prime traditional auto loans. In the same sample, 10% of BHPH loan balances were delinquent in the third quarter of 2025, compared with 3.8% of traditional auto-lender balances. The note describes BHPH dealers as selling and financing vehicles themselves. These are historical sample findings, not current offers or rates representative of every buyer. Wholesale values measure prices paid in the dealer market, not what a retail shopper will pay. Even a change in average dealer listings would not establish the future price of one particular car. Segment trends can differ, and a vehicle’s condition, mileage, location, and availability all matter. Cox Automotive’s September 2026 data can inform your comparison, but it cannot establish that waiting will lower your specific purchase price.
