Not just because of age. A 30-year-old car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may have aging electrolytic capacitors, and leaking electrolyte can damage the circuit board. But age alone does not show that the capacitors have failed or that preventive replacement is necessary. Have the actual module inspected and diagnose the car’s symptoms before deciding.
Why age alone is not enough
Capacitors do age, but their behavior depends on their technology and operating conditions. Murata describes capacitance decline and increased equivalent series resistance (ESR) as aging effects for the polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors covered on its technical page. That information does not establish a lifespan or replacement interval for every capacitor type used in automotive ECUs.
There is no age-based replacement interval established for a 30-year-old car ECU here. Replacing components that are still sound can introduce soldering damage or other faults, while a leaking capacitor left in service may harm the board. The decision should turn on evidence from the specific module and vehicle, not a universal rule.
What to check before replacing capacitors
Inspect the actual ECU
Leakage can corrode or short circuit-board traces. A September 2003 GEARS/ATRA article describes staining or corrosion near a capacitor as a possible clue, but appearance is not conclusive: many automotive ECU boards have a protective coating that can complicate visual assessment. Look for evidence of leakage or board damage, but do not assume a clean-looking board proves every component is healthy.

- EASY SOLUTION: Known to fix the dreaded NO FUEL PUMP PRIME issue. Think about all of the headaches you will avoid!
If the board is corroded or a trace is damaged, the repair may involve more than swapping capacitors. A technician experienced in board-level automotive electronics can assess the extent of the damage.
Diagnose the vehicle, not just the symptom
Starting, drivability, or warning-light complaints do not identify a failed capacitor on their own. For example, a Nissan bulletin dated March 15, 1999, says that specified MIL and drivability complaints on 1998–99 Altimas may result from air-conditioner evaporator condensation leaking onto the ECM. That is a model-specific example, not guidance for other vehicles; it illustrates why diagnosis should follow service information for the actual car.

Check the vehicle’s service information and establish whether the ECU is the cause before opening or repairing it. Make, model, ECU part number, symptoms, and board condition all matter; without those details, no exact component list or procedure can be specified.
If replacement is justified
Choose components from the actual board and reliable vehicle-specific and component information. A capacitor that looks similar is not necessarily a suitable substitute, and a generic kit is not a safe fit for every ECU.
- Match the capacitance value and voltage rating.
- Confirm polarity, temperature rating, and relevant electrical characteristics.
- Check that the component physically fits the board and enclosure.
- Follow the vehicle’s service information and the component manufacturer’s specifications.
Murata’s discussion concerns a particular capacitor technology; it does not provide specifications for your ECU. The original component markings and appropriate technical documentation are needed to identify suitable replacements.

Consider a qualified ECU or circuit-board repair specialist if there is corrosion, trace damage, or soldering work beyond your skill level. Board-level work can require more than replacing parts, and an error can damage the module. If you are weighing repair against another module, first confirm compatibility and the nature of the fault; no vehicle-specific repair-cost comparison can be made without those details.

How to decide
- Identify the vehicle and module. Record the make, model, year, and ECU part number.
- Check vehicle-specific guidance. Review relevant service information and diagnose other plausible causes of the symptoms.
- Inspect the ECU. Look for leakage, corrosion, and trace damage, remembering that protective coating can make visual inspection less straightforward.
- Choose the repair based on findings. Replace capacitors only when inspection and diagnosis support it, and use correctly specified components. Refer board damage or difficult soldering to a specialist.
