San Bernardino County sheriff’s Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr., 36, died on March 17, 2025, after his patrol vehicle collided with another vehicle during a pursuit in Victorville, California. Reports described the patrol vehicle as having “split in half,” but that phrase refers to the crash damage; investigators had not announced a final cause of the collision.
What happened in Victorville
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said deputies from the Victorville Station saw a stolen vehicle near Mojave Drive and Amargosa Road at about 10:58 a.m. on March 17, 2025. The driver allegedly failed to yield when deputies attempted a traffic stop, and a pursuit followed.

During the pursuit, Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr. was involved in a collision with another vehicle. Cuevas died at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, identified in reporting as Marcelline Demyan, was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

What “the vehicle split in half” means
News coverage used the phrase “vehicle splits in half” to describe the patrol vehicle’s extensive visible damage after the crash. The available reports do not provide an engineering explanation for how the vehicle was damaged, nor do they establish which impact or action caused the breakup. The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team was investigating the collision.

The department’s account, reproduced in reporting, says the pursuit began after deputies attempted to stop a stolen vehicle and the driver failed to yield. It also identifies the crash as the event in which Cuevas was killed and says the accident investigation team was examining what happened.

Demyan told CBS News Los Angeles, “He didn’t have the siren on, he didn’t have the noise on, nothing.” That is her account of what she perceived before the impact, not an investigative finding. The available reporting does not resolve whether emergency equipment was activated or assign fault for the crash.

Who was Deputy Hector Cuevas Jr.?
Cuevas was 36. Reporting said he had six years in law enforcement and had served at the Victorville Station for three years. Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Cuevas left a wife and two children.
California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences in a press release: “Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Deputy Cuevas. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues as they navigate this unimaginable time.”

Why the final cause matters
A pursuit collision can involve multiple questions, including vehicle speeds, traffic movements, road conditions, visibility, emergency-light and siren use, and the actions of each driver. None of those issues should be treated as settled here. The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team was still investigating in the initial reports, and those reports did not establish a definitive cause.
Likewise, the initial coverage identified Turner as the suspect but did not establish a later court outcome. Allegations and arrest descriptions are not findings of guilt.
