The Shelby 1000 was not a factory Mustang GT trim. Shelby American built it as a post-title conversion of the 2012 Ford Shelby GT500, adding power and supporting chassis and braking changes. At its April 2012 launch, Shelby announced a street version and a competition-focused S/C version; the headline horsepower figures depend on which version and source you mean.
What the Shelby 1000 was
Shelby American introduced the Shelby 1000 at the 2012 New York International Auto Show as a conversion for the Ford Shelby GT500. In a post-title conversion, the buyer starts with the donor GT500 and has the Shelby package applied; it is not a separate factory Mustang GT model. Shelby’s launch announcement described the package as based on the 2012 GT500. Shelby American’s April 2012 announcement set out the original plan and pricing.
Street and S/C versions
Shelby announced two configurations. The street version was described by the company as 50-state street legal at launch; the S/C was the track- or competition-oriented package. That launch-era description should not be taken as a guarantee that every converted car meets road-use rules in every jurisdiction today.
| Version | Intended use and road-use description | Power figure and attribution | 2012 announced package price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Street | Street version; Shelby described it as 50-state street legal in its 2012 announcement. | Shelby’s launch announcement did not state a separate street-version output figure. Road & Track later reported the prototype’s claimed output; that figure should not be treated as an independently verified production specification. | $149,995 starting price, excluding the donor GT500, per Shelby American’s 2012 announcement. |
| S/C | Track/competition-oriented version; Shelby announced it as the S/C package. | MotorTrend reported 1,100 hp for the S/C in 2013. It is a later, version-specific report, not the same claim as Road & Track’s prototype figure. | $154,995 starting price, excluding the donor GT500, per Shelby American’s 2012 announcement. |
Road & Track’s 2012 first drive identified its car as a prototype with a supercharged 5.4-liter V8 and reported Shelby’s claimed 1,000 bhp at 6,450 rpm and 750 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm. The story noted the prototype was about 95 percent complete and that production details could differ, so these are attributed prototype claims rather than test-certified output figures. Road & Track’s 2012 first drive provides that qualification.

- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Adjustable seat back on some models
- Full function steering with Four wheel spring suspension
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
MotorTrend’s 2013 S/C report used a 1,100-hp figure and said Shelby reported that 40 to 50 customers had purchased the 2012 S/C. That customer count is Shelby’s reported figure for the S/C, not a final production total for every Shelby 1000 configuration. MotorTrend’s S/C report is the source for those later claims.
What changed beyond the engine
Shelby said the conversion addressed the GT500’s power, braking and handling rather than simply increasing boost. Its announcement describes engine internals, a supercharger, cooling and exhaust work, plus brakes, suspension and handling changes. It also identifies the hood, rear panel and splitter as functional exterior components, not merely styling additions. The announcement does not provide a complete production bill of materials, so individual parts and specifications can vary or remain undocumented in public launch material.

2012 launch price and production plan
The announced package prices were separate from the cost of the GT500 donor car. Shelby estimated an approximately $200,000 price for a completed car in 2012. It also announced a limited run of 100 numbered cars to be documented in the Shelby Registry. That was a production plan, not proof that exactly 100 cars were ultimately completed.
These figures describe the 2012 launch, not current conversion availability or resale value. Shelby’s model page for 2011–2014 Shelby 1000s has displayed a temporary unavailability notice, while its broader post-title-package listing does not establish that new conversions can currently be ordered. No current market price or verified transaction value is established here. See Shelby American’s Shelby 1000 model page for its current page status.

How to check whether a car is an authentic Shelby 1000
A GT500 listing, Shelby-style bodywork or a horsepower claim alone does not establish that a car is a documented Shelby 1000 conversion. Shelby said its planned cars would be numbered and recorded in its Registry; the company describes the Registry as a catalog of authentic Shelby vehicles and notes the risk of cloned or copied cars. For a specific vehicle, request its Shelby documentation and verify its record through the official Shelby Registry. Shelby’s history page provides additional company context.
