Short answer: Drive across the modern Seven Mile Bridge on U.S. 1, then park legally near the Marathon end to walk or cycle the accessible section of the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The active bridge is a vehicle crossing, not a scenic pull-off. The historic bridge, Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach and nearby parks provide the safer places to stop for photographs and water views.

The modern bridge is approximately 6.765 miles long and opened to traffic on May 24, 1982. It connects the Marathon area in the Middle Keys with Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. A good visit can take 1–2 hours, while adding Pigeon Key, Bahia Honda State Park or Marathon attractions turns the crossing into a half-day or full-day Overseas Highway itinerary.

Seven Mile Bridge at a glance

Detail What to know
Road U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway
Modern bridge Approximately 6.765 miles long; opened to traffic on May 24, 1982
Location Between the Marathon area and Little Duck Key, near the Lower Keys’ MM 40 area
Historic bridge The original railroad-derived alignment remains in sections beside the modern bridge
Best walking access The accessible Old Seven Mile Bridge section near Marathon, reached from the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail
Best nearby bridge-view stop Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach, near MM 40

The bridge is the visual centerpiece of a much longer road trip. The Overseas Highway is an All-American Road running from the mainland through Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, the Lower Keys and Key West. Along the route are coral-reef parks, beaches, mangrove islands, historic railroad remnants, conservation facilities and marine-education attractions.

Modern Seven Mile Bridge versus Old Seven Mile Bridge

These are related but different experiences:

  • Modern Seven Mile Bridge: Drive across it as part of U.S. 1. Do not stop in a travel lane, park on the shoulder or attempt to walk along the active roadway.
  • Old Seven Mile Bridge: Park at a signed or designated area near the Marathon side, then walk or cycle the accessible section for the classic bridge photographs and open-water views.
  • Pigeon Key: Visit separately for a guided historic-island experience beneath the old bridge alignment. Walking the old bridge does not automatically include admission to Pigeon Key.

The original structure was derived from Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railway. Much of the historic alignment no longer functions as an ordinary vehicle bridge, and access can vary by section and maintenance status. Do not describe the Old Seven as a guaranteed, fully continuous seven-mile pedestrian trail.

How to visit the bridge without creating a roadside problem

1. Drive the active bridge first

Stay on U.S. 1 and treat the modern bridge like the highway crossing it is. The views open across broad Atlantic- and Gulf-facing water, low mangrove islands, the historic bridge alignment and the open Lower Keys horizon. A passenger can take photographs; the driver should remain focused on the road.

There is no ordinary scenic pull-off on the active bridge. If you want to stop, use the Old Seven Mile Bridge access, Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach or another signed park and parking area.

2. Walk or cycle the Old Seven from the Marathon side

The renovated, accessible portion of the Old Seven Mile Bridge is the best place to experience the crossing on foot or by bicycle. Its access and parking area are near the Marathon side, with entry through the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. You can walk only as far as feels comfortable, take photographs, look across the water and return without committing to a long hike.

Bring water, sun protection and footwear suitable for an exposed bridge surface. Shade is limited. Because the old alignment includes sections with changing access conditions, follow signs and barriers rather than assuming every visible span is open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Add Pigeon Key only if you want the history component

Pigeon Key sits beneath the historic bridge alignment and preserves the story of the railroad workers who built the Overseas Railway. Monroe County says that more than 400 workers lived in the railroad village on Pigeon Key during construction in the early 1900s.

Pigeon Key offers guided experiences reached by train, walking or bicycle, depending on the ticket and operating conditions. Its official tour information lists train departures at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., along with separate walk-and-bike admission. Reservations may be available online up to two weeks ahead. Treat those times, prices and access arrangements as changeable and confirm them with Pigeon Key before traveling.

The important planning distinction is simple: the Old Seven walk is a bridge-view and exercise stop; Pigeon Key is a ticketed, guided historic-island experience. The active modern bridge does not provide ordinary pedestrian access to Pigeon Key.

What you can see from the bridge

On a clear day, the crossing delivers the broad, low-angle scenery that makes the Lower Keys feel different from mainland Florida. Look for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open water extending on both sides of the highway
  • Low mangrove islands and shoreline vegetation
  • The parallel historic bridge alignment and its remaining sections
  • Small boats and fishing activity in the surrounding waters
  • A nearly uninterrupted horizon, especially from the old bridge’s pedestrian-accessible sections

Views change with weather, light, wind and boat activity, so the bridge should be treated as a scenic drive rather than a guaranteed wildlife-viewing location. The most dependable experience is the landscape itself and the contrast between the modern highway bridge and the historic structure beside it.

Best stops near Seven Mile Bridge

Heading south and west from Key Largo, these stops generally appear in a practical order before and after the bridge. Mile markers are more useful than island names when planning a Keys drive.

Marathon-area stops before the bridge

The Turtle Hospital — around MM 48.5

The Turtle Hospital in Marathon is a veterinary and rehabilitation facility for injured sea turtles and offers public tours. It is a good choice for families and visitors interested in conservation rather than simply adding another beach stop. Tour times, admission and availability should be checked directly before arrival.

Crane Point Hammock

Crane Point combines nature and local history. The site includes trails through a hardwood hammock, a museum and the historic Adderley House, making it a useful alternative when you want a land-based cultural stop instead of a boat excursion.

Sombrero Beach

Sombrero Beach is a Marathon-area beach option suited to travelers who want time for swimming, relaxing or a family beach break. It is not just a quick bridge photograph, so allow meaningful stop time rather than trying to fit it into a rushed crossing.

Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach — near MM 40

At the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge near MM 40, this Monroe County beach park provides shallow-water access, a pavilion and views back toward the bridge. The county lists daily hours of 7:30 a.m. until sunset. Permanent restroom facilities have required renovation, with portable toilets listed as available, so plan for a simple park rather than a full-service beach resort.

This is one of the easiest places to pair a shoreline break with a bridge photograph. Park only where permitted, and do not use the bridge shoulder as an alternative.

Bahia Honda State Park — near MM 37

Bahia Honda State Park, at 36850 Overseas Highway on Big Pine Key, is one of the strongest stops after the bridge. It offers beaches, nature, picnic areas, water-based recreation and historic bridge views. The remaining bridge structure gives the stop extra relevance on a Seven Mile Bridge itinerary because it helps explain the transportation history of the Overseas Highway.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Florida State Parks lists hours of 8:00 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year, and a standard vehicle fee of $8 in its current published information. The park can temporarily close when day-use areas reach capacity, especially on weekends and holidays. Arrive early if Bahia Honda is important to your plan, and check the official park page on the day of travel rather than assuming entry will be available.

The park’s history materials note that construction of the Overseas Highway connecting Miami and Key West began in 1904. Bahia Honda later became a county park before becoming a state park in 1961.

What to see on the way from Key Largo or Florida City

If you are approaching from Miami or Florida City, the Seven Mile Bridge is one landmark on an attraction-rich route rather than an isolated destination. The Overseas Highway’s mile markers begin near Florida City at approximately MM 127 and descend toward Key West at MM 0.

Area Approximate mile markers Useful planning angle
Key Largo MM 108–90 Reef access, mangroves, beaches and marine activities
Islamorada MM 90–63 Water views, marinas, fishing, boating and dining
Marathon MM 63–40 Wildlife attractions, beaches, Crane Point and the Old Seven Mile Bridge
Lower Keys MM 40–4 Little Duck Key, Bahia Honda, nature stops and the approach to Key West

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park — Key Largo, near MM 102.5

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is the most distinctive early stop for travelers beginning in Key Largo. Located at 102601 Overseas Highway, it is recognized by Florida State Parks as the country’s first undersea park and encompasses approximately 70 nautical square miles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The park includes beaches, short trails, mangrove paddling routes, an aquarium and—weather permitting—glass-bottom and snorkeling boat tours. Florida State Parks lists hours of 8:00 a.m. until sunset year-round. Its current published vehicle admission is $8 plus 50 cents per person for a multiple-occupant vehicle, with other fees applying to single occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists, boat ramps and camping.

Entry, parking and boat operations can be affected by demand and weather. In addition, Florida State Parks says that beginning July 22, 2026, some Pennekamp facilities and services are limited during construction, including one of two boat ramps, the boat sewage pump-out station and much of the boat-trailer parking. If your trip is on or after that date, check the park’s current status before making it the centerpiece of the day.

Islamorada and the Middle Keys

Islamorada makes sense as a longer stop between Key Largo and Marathon. The route has water views, marinas, fishing and boating operators, roadside parks and local dining. Because individual businesses, boat departures and opening hours change frequently, choose specific stops only after confirming them for your travel date.

For route planning, the mile-marker system is more dependable than trying to estimate distances by island. Record the MM number for every reservation and attraction, and remember that the numbers descend as you travel toward Key West.

Dolphin Research Center — Grassy Key

Dolphin Research Center is on Grassy Key, north of Marathon, and fits a wildlife- and education-focused itinerary. Regional tourism information describes it as a nonprofit marine-mammal research and education facility with dolphins and California sea lions, public educational sessions and optional interactive programs.

Do not assume that an animal interaction is included with general admission. Programs, schedules and availability should be confirmed with the center before you build the stop into a tight driving day.

Three practical Seven Mile Bridge itineraries

Quick bridge stop: about 1–2 hours

  1. Drive across the modern Seven Mile Bridge on U.S. 1.
  2. Exit near the Marathon-side Old Seven Mile Bridge access and park legally.
  3. Walk a comfortable portion of the Old Seven Mile Bridge for photographs and water views.
  4. If time allows, continue to Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach near MM 40 for a shoreline view facing the bridge.

This plan is best for travelers passing through. It gives you the central bridge experience without pretending that a short visit covers every historic section or attraction in the Lower Keys.

Half-day Marathon plan

  1. Begin with the Old Seven Mile Bridge walk.
  2. Add Pigeon Key if the train, walk or bicycle schedule and ticket availability fit your day.
  3. Choose either the Turtle Hospital or Crane Point rather than trying to hurry through both.
  4. Finish at Sombrero Beach or Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach.

This sequence combines engineering history, conservation, scenery and a manageable amount of driving. Pigeon Key requires more advance planning than the bridge walk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Full-day drive from Key Largo

  1. Leave early; the route from Key Largo toward the Lower Keys contains enough attractions to fill a day.
  2. Choose John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park if reef, mangrove or boat activities are a priority.
  3. Use the mile markers to organize one or two stops through Islamorada and the Middle Keys.
  4. Select one major Marathon attraction: the Turtle Hospital, Crane Point or Dolphin Research Center.
  5. Walk the Old Seven Mile Bridge.
  6. Continue to Little Duck Key and, if the park is open and has capacity, Bahia Honda State Park.

This is a demanding schedule if you also intend to reach Key West the same day. Seeing Seven Mile Bridge is not the same as driving the entire Overseas Highway to Key West. Add time for parking, tours, weather, bridge traffic and the possibility that a capacity-limited park may not admit additional day visitors.

Mile markers, maps and reservations

Mile markers are the Keys’ most useful navigation system. Key Largo is roughly MM 108–90, Islamorada MM 90–63, Marathon MM 63–40 and the Lower Keys MM 40–4, with Key West at MM 0. Use the markers to compare stops and judge whether a proposed itinerary requires backtracking.

A Florida Keys road map is still useful when planning a multi-stop drive, particularly if you want to see the relationship between the islands, parks and bridge approaches without relying entirely on a phone. Pair it with current digital directions for closures and live routing; a paper map cannot reflect same-day event restrictions or attraction cancellations.

For a longer trip involving Key Largo, Marathon, Bahia Honda and Key West, a Florida Keys travel guide can help organize attractions by island and mile marker. Use it as a planning aid, not as a guarantee that prices, hours or tours remain unchanged.

Current hours, fees and booking cautions

Stop or activity Published information to know What to verify
Old Seven Mile Bridge Accessible for pedestrian and bicycle use in renovated sections Open sections, parking, maintenance and trail access
Pigeon Key Official information lists four train departures: 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.; walk-and-bike admission is separate Departure times, ticket availability, prices and reservations
Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach 7:30 a.m. until sunset; portable toilets may be provided while permanent facilities are renovated Amenities and any temporary closure
Bahia Honda State Park 8:00 a.m. until sunset, 365 days a year; current standard vehicle fee listed as $8 Capacity, entry status, current fee and water-activity availability
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park 8:00 a.m. until sunset year-round; current published vehicle fee begins at $8 plus applicable per-person and activity fees Weather, boat departures, construction-related restrictions and parking
Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center Public tours, educational sessions and optional programs are available according to attraction information Tour times, admission, reservations and whether interactive programs are operating

Bridge events can also change the plan. Monroe County’s published 2026 calendar, for example, listed a Seven Mile Bridge closure from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for the April 11, 2026 Seven Mile Bridge Run. That specific event date is not a permanent schedule, but it illustrates why you should check county and transportation notices before setting out.

What to pack for the bridge and the Keys drive

  • Water and sun protection: The old bridge and shoreline viewpoints have limited shade. Bring drinking water, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Comfortable footwear: Use shoes appropriate for walking on an exposed bridge and for park trails.
  • Navigation backup: Keep the mile-marker plan available, even if you normally use phone navigation.
  • Optional wildlife gear: Compact binoculars for travel can be useful at shorelines, parks and wildlife facilities, but they are not necessary for enjoying the bridge.
  • Water-activity equipment: If you plan to swim or snorkel at an appropriate park, a travel snorkel set may be convenient. Official rentals or guided tours may be preferable, and visitors should follow each park’s rules and current conditions.
  • Reservations and confirmation details: Save tour times, admission information and the relevant mile markers before leaving.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Stopping on the modern bridge: It is an active vehicle crossing, not a photo pull-off.
  • Assuming the Old Seven is a continuous seven-mile trail: Access varies along the historic alignment. Walk only the currently open, signed section.
  • Confusing Pigeon Key with the bridge walk: Pigeon Key requires its own ticket or admission arrangement and may require a scheduled train, walk or bicycle visit.
  • Planning Bahia Honda as an automatic stop: The park can temporarily close when day-use capacity is reached.
  • Assuming every tour runs every day: Pigeon Key, reef boats, the Turtle Hospital and Dolphin Research Center all depend on schedules, availability and sometimes weather.
  • Trying to do every attraction in one drive: Select one major attraction in Marathon and allow time for parking and delays.
  • Relying on a historic description for current access: Bridge sections, restrooms, boat ramps and parking can change. Check official sources shortly before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you walk across the modern Seven Mile Bridge?

The modern bridge is an active U.S. 1 vehicle crossing and should not be treated as a pedestrian sightseeing route. Park at a designated area and use the accessible section of the Old Seven Mile Bridge instead.

How long does it take to visit Seven Mile Bridge?

A quick visit takes about 1–2 hours if you drive the modern bridge, park near the Marathon-side Old Seven access and walk part of the historic bridge. Add several hours for Pigeon Key, a Marathon attraction or Bahia Honda State Park.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Pigeon Key part of the Old Seven Mile Bridge walk?

No. The bridge walk and Pigeon Key are connected historically but are separate experiences. Pigeon Key requires its own admission and may involve a scheduled train, walking or bicycle access.

Where is the best place to stop for a Seven Mile Bridge photo?

The Old Seven Mile Bridge’s accessible section is the primary photo and walking location. Little Duck Key Veterans’ Memorial Beach near MM 40 also provides a shoreline view of the bridge. Do not stop on the active bridge.

Can Seven Mile Bridge close temporarily?

Yes. Special events, transportation notices, weather or maintenance can affect access. Check current county and transportation notices before traveling, especially if your schedule is tight.

The Bottom Line

The best Seven Mile Bridge visit uses two crossings for two purposes: drive the modern bridge to experience the Overseas Highway, then use the Old Seven Mile Bridge for walking, cycling and photographs. Add Pigeon Key for railroad history, Little Duck Key for a short shoreline stop or Bahia Honda for a longer Lower Keys visit. Use mile markers, reserve scheduled attractions and never turn the active bridge into an unscheduled roadside stop.
