Possibly, but a broken serpentine belt alone does not mean the water pump has failed. Whether the belt failure stops coolant circulation depends on your vehicle’s belt routing; a bad tensioner, idler pulley, or another accessory can also cause or accompany a break. If the engine is overheating or coolant is leaking, shut it off and arrange help rather than driving.
What to do immediately after the belt breaks
If the belt broke while you were driving, pull over somewhere safe and turn the engine off—especially if the temperature gauge is rising, you see steam or coolant leaking, or the belt drives the water pump. Kia’s owner guidance says, “If the water pump drive belt is broken or engine coolant is leaking out, stop the engine immediately and call the nearest authorized Kia dealer for assistance.” That is Kia guidance, not a vehicle-specific instruction for every make and model. Do not open a hot radiator cap: pressurized coolant can escape and cause serious burns. If the engine is overheating, coolant is leaking, or your vehicle’s water pump is belt-driven, arrange roadside assistance or a tow. Belt layouts differ, so do not assume that every serpentine belt drives the water pump or that it is safe to drive a certain distance with the belt missing. Check your owner’s manual for vehicle-specific guidance.
Does a broken serpentine belt mean the water pump is bad?
No. The belt may have failed while the pump is still functional, or a problem with the pump or another drive component may have contributed to the belt failure. First establish whether this vehicle’s belt drives the water pump. If it does, a broken belt can stop the pump from circulating coolant and lead to overheating. If it does not, the belt failure does not by itself stop the pump through that belt.

A water pump should not be replaced just because the belt broke. The symptoms and condition of the entire accessory drive help distinguish a belt-only failure from a failed or binding component.
Clues that can help identify the cause
| What you notice | What it may indicate |
|---|---|
| Coolant loss or a visible leak | Possible water-pump trouble, though inspection is needed to identify the source. |
| Noise from the pump area, or a pump pulley that feels loose or binds | Possible bearing, impeller, or other mechanical damage; a mechanic should inspect it. |
| Poor cooling or engine overheating | Possible cooling-system or pump trouble. If the belt drives the pump, the broken belt itself may have stopped coolant circulation. |
| A belt that broke or wore prematurely, or reduced accessory output | A tensioner or another drive component may be involved. Gates recommends checking the tensioner when an accessory is replaced. |
These are clues, not proof that the water pump is bad. HELLA identifies noise, coolant loss, and deficient cooling or overheating among possible signs of water-pump trouble; listed mechanical causes include damage to the impeller, bearing, or seal. HELLA water-pump guidance

What to ask the mechanic to inspect
Ask for an inspection of the complete belt drive rather than a belt replacement alone. The broken belt may be the visible failure, but an underlying pulley or tensioner problem could damage a replacement belt too.
- Confirm the belt routing and whether this belt drives the water pump.
- Inspect the tensioner, idler pulley, and accessory pulleys for damage, looseness, or binding.
- Check the water pump for coolant leakage, bearing noise, looseness, or binding.
- Review whether the engine overheated before deciding to restart or drive it, particularly if the belt drives the pump.
The vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine are needed to confirm belt routing and identify the correct replacement belt. A shop inspection is necessary to diagnose the cause; symptoms alone cannot establish that the pump failed.
