An autonomous Maserati MC20 Coupé reached a reported 197.7 mph (318 km/h) on March 3, 2025, at a runway facility at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center. Stellantis says no human was on board. This was a modified Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) competition car making a high-speed runway run—not a standard road-going MC20 demonstrating consumer self-driving capability.
How fast did the self-driving Maserati go?
The Maserati hit 197.7 mph (318 km/h), according to Stellantis’ March 3, 2025 announcement. The run took place at the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, during 1000 Miglia Experience Florida. Stellantis describes the facility’s runway as 15,000 feet (2.8 miles) long.
The car was an Indy Autonomous Challenge Maserati MC20 Coupé modified for autonomous operation. PoliMOVE-MSU, whose AI driver software was developed at Politecnico di Milano, controlled the car; Politecnico di Milano also reported the achievement.
What record did the run break?
Stellantis says the 197.7-mph run exceeded the previous autonomous-car speed record of 192.8 mph, set by an IAC AV-21 racecar at the same facility in April 2022. These were different vehicles, even though both results came from the Indy Autonomous Challenge.

The word “record” needs a category attached. Stellantis also says this MC20 had reached 177 mph (285 km/h) at Piacenza in November 2024, which it described as the fastest autonomous production car. That is a production-car category claim, distinct from the overall autonomous-car speed record claimed for the 2025 run. The figures and characterizations are Stellantis’ accounts; the reviewed sources do not identify an independent record-certifying body or protocol.
How it compares with IAC’s racetrack results
A separate IAC event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 6, 2024, produced two racetrack figures: 184 mph (296 km/h) as the top speed and 180 mph (290 km/h) for the fastest passing overtake. IAC reported those results. They are not the same kind of attempt as a top-speed run on the Kennedy Space Center runway.

What the test says—and does not say—about self-driving cars
The result shows an autonomous system controlling a modified performance car at very high speed on a dedicated runway. IAC’s PoliMOVE-MSU team developed the AI driver software, and Politecnico di Milano identifies PoliMOVE-MSU as part of its AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Driving Autonomous) performance division.
Stellantis presents high-speed autonomous racing as a test environment for technology that could inform road cars. That stated aim is not evidence that this runway demonstration validates consumer-road autonomy: the event was a controlled competition and demonstration, not a public-road driver-assistance test. Nor was the vehicle a standard retail MC20 operating as a self-driving car.
