“Self-Driving” Cars Have a Dirty Secret: The Hidden Energy and Emissions Costs

Autonomous vehicles are not automatically green. Their computers consume electricity, and extra or empty miles could outweigh drivetrain efficiency—though shared electric robotaxis may cut emissions under the right conditions.

Self-driving technology is not automatically clean or dirty. Its hidden environmental cost is that the car’s computers consume substantial electricity, while automation could encourage more travel, empty repositioning trips or journeys that would otherwise use transit. Those effects can outweigh gains from efficient electric drivetrains.

The answer depends on the vehicle’s powertrain, electricity mix, computing load, mileage, occupancy, manufacturing footprint and the trips it replaces. Most headline figures are modeled scenarios rather than measurements of a mature autonomous fleet.

What the “dirty secret” actually is

A more efficient vehicle does not guarantee a lower-emissions transportation system. Autonomous vehicles add two easily overlooked variables:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Onboard computing: cameras, lidar, radar and artificial-intelligence computers draw electricity every time the system operates.
  • System-level travel: convenient driverless travel may increase total vehicle miles, send cars empty to pick up passengers, or pull riders away from buses and trains.

Environmental results also change depending on whether an analysis counts only driving energy or includes battery and vehicle manufacturing, sensors, maintenance and electricity production. Greenhouse gases, total energy and particles from brakes and tires are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Three very different things called “self-driving”

Category What it means Environmental evidence
Driver assistance Features such as adaptive cruise control or lane keeping that still require a human driver Effects depend mainly on the underlying vehicle, how often the features are used and whether they change driving behavior.
Level 4 driverless service A vehicle can drive without a human within a defined operating area, such as a robotaxi zone The International Energy Agency reported on 20 May 2026 that commercial Level 4 electric driverless taxis operate in more than 20 cities worldwide.
Widespread Level 5 autonomy A vehicle can drive anywhere in all conditions without a human fallback The IEA says Level 5 cars are not currently in sight. Global-fleet claims about them are projections, not observations.

The electricity bill inside an autonomous car

MIT researchers modeled the emissions from computers in a hypothetical global fleet of fully autonomous electric vehicles. In one scenario, one billion vehicles each drove for one hour per day and each computer consumed 840 watts. The resulting computing emissions were estimated to be comparable to current data-center emissions, depending on the electricity’s carbon intensity.

That is a modeled thought experiment, not a measurement showing that today’s cars already emit as much as data centers. The calculation varies with fleet size, driving hours, computer power and the grid supplying the electricity.

In more than 90% of the MIT scenarios, the computer in each vehicle had to use less than 1.2 kilowatts to keep autonomous-vehicle computing emissions below current data-center emissions. In one scenario with 95% of the global fleet autonomous by 2050, computing workloads doubled every three years. Even with continued grid decarbonization at the modeled rate, hardware efficiency would need to improve faster than doubling every 1.1 years.

MIT’s analysis, reported by MIT News on 13 January 2023, counted operational computing. It did not include sensor energy or vehicle manufacturing, and it acknowledged uncertainty about future driving hours and workloads. As MIT associate professor Vivienne Sze put it: “The energy consumption of an autonomous vehicle is really critical, not just for extending the battery life, but also for sustainability.”

More driving can erase efficiency gains

The U.S. Energy Information Administration has emphasized that autonomous-vehicle energy demand is highly uncertain. Its AEO2018 review found published estimates ranging from about 60% less to 200% more U.S. light-duty-vehicle energy use, depending on assumptions about travel and efficiency.

In EIA’s two modeled 2050 cases, vehicle miles traveled were 14% above the Reference case. Higher efficiency partly offset that extra travel, but total transportation energy still came out higher:

Extra travel can come from people taking trips they previously avoided, longer commutes made easier by working in the car, or empty vehicles circulating between passengers. If autonomous cars replace walking, cycling or transit rather than inefficient private-car trips, the system can become more energy intensive even when each vehicle is efficient.

When automation could reduce emissions

Automation can support lower emissions under a different set of conditions: electric powertrains, clean electricity, high occupancy, shared use, efficient vehicle sizing and high annual utilization.

A 2015 Nature Climate Change model by Greenblatt and Saxena estimated that shared autonomous taxis in the United States could have 87%–94% lower per-mile greenhouse-gas emissions in 2030 than current conventional vehicles. That result combined cleaner electricity, smaller trip-specific vehicles and high annual mileage that improved the economics of efficient vehicles. It was a conditional model of shared autonomous taxis, not a forecast for private self-driving cars or today’s entire fleet.

A 2018 review in Environmental Science & Technology reached the broader point: connected and automated vehicles can transform vehicles, transportation systems, cities and society simultaneously. Benefits found at the vehicle level may disappear if automation increases total use or changes travel toward higher-emission modes.

Climate emissions are not the only pollution issue

Electric vehicles eliminate tailpipe exhaust, but they still produce particles from tires and brakes. Automation can alter those emissions through changes in speed, traffic flow, mileage and vehicle weight.

A 2021 modeled study of Metro Vancouver scenarios found greenhouse-gas emissions 6%–20% lower than its no-connected-and-automated-vehicle conditions. In some of the same scenarios, increased vehicle travel was associated with brake-wear PM2.5 emissions up to 30% higher in 2040. The geography, year and modeled assumptions matter; these figures are not universal measured outcomes.

What is actually operating in 2026?

The commercial reality is narrower than the image of any car driving anywhere. The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026, published 20 May 2026, reports that Level 4 electric driverless taxis operate commercially in more than 20 cities worldwide. It also says the commercial robotaxi services currently in operation use electric vehicles.

Those services run within defined areas and conditions. They should not be used as evidence that a future fleet of privately owned, fully autonomous cars will have the same mileage, occupancy or environmental performance. The IEA says Level 5 cars are not currently in sight.

How to compare an environmental claim

Before accepting a percentage reduction or increase, line up the assumptions on every axis:

Question Why it changes the result
What life-cycle boundary is used? Driving electricity alone can look different from a calculation that includes manufacturing, batteries and sensors.
What powertrain and grid? An electric vehicle charged on a low-carbon grid has a different footprint from one charged on a carbon-intensive grid.
How much computing power and operating time? Higher wattage, more active hours and frequent data processing raise electricity use.
How many miles, including empty repositioning? More passenger and non-passenger travel can offset per-mile efficiency.
How many occupants share each trip? Shared rides spread vehicle and computing impacts across more passenger miles.
Which trips are displaced? Replacing a conventional car trip differs from replacing transit, walking or cycling.
Which pollutant is measured? Greenhouse gases, energy consumption and brake- or tire-wear particles answer different questions.
Where and when? Results from the United States, Metro Vancouver or a particular 2030, 2040 or 2050 scenario cannot be combined into one forecast.

What would make autonomous vehicles cleaner—or dirtier?

Conditions that improve the odds of lower impact

  • Electric vehicles powered by increasingly low-carbon electricity
  • Efficient, right-sized vehicles rather than oversized cars carrying one person
  • High occupancy and coordinated shared rides
  • Few empty repositioning miles
  • Trips replacing conventional car travel rather than public transit or active travel
  • Efficient computers and sensors designed for low standby and operating power
  • Planning that limits induced travel and congestion

Conditions that increase the risk of higher impact

  • Large private vehicles with one occupant
  • Carbon-intensive electricity or inefficient onboard computers
  • More total trips, longer journeys and empty vehicle circulation
  • Falling transit use because door-to-door rides are more convenient
  • Analyses that omit manufacturing, sensors or electricity production
  • More mileage that increases tire and brake particle emissions

Bottom line

The dirty secret is a systems problem, not proof that every self-driving car is a pollution machine. Autonomous computing adds a real electricity demand, and easier travel could increase total miles enough to cancel vehicle-level efficiency gains. Shared electric robotaxis powered by cleaner grids could reduce emissions in some carefully defined scenarios, while private autonomous cars that travel more and replace transit could worsen them. The credible answer is therefore conditional: judge the whole transportation system, not just the efficiency sticker on the car.
