For compact sedans, the Honda Civic is the strongest five-year resale-value pick; for midsize sedans, it is the Toyota Camry, with the Honda Accord close behind. Those are class-specific results, not a fair head-to-head ranking: iSeeCars’ 2026 study puts the Civic sedan at 75.5% resale value and the Camry at 68.5%. Kelley Blue Book also names the Civic and Camry its 2026 compact- and midsize-car award winners, but those awards are projections and do not publish a retention percentage for either model.
Which sedan holds its value best after five years?
There is no single winner across all sedan sizes. The Honda Civic leads the compact-sedan discussion, while the Toyota Camry leads among midsize cars. The Camry’s closest listed midsize rival is the Honda Accord. These figures come from iSeeCars’ 2026 resale-value rankings, which compare MSRP with the prices of equivalent five-year-old used vehicles.

The large-car figures are included for context; they are not directly comparable with the compact or midsize results. Likewise, iSeeCars lists a Civic hatchback at 76.9% in its small/compact category, but a hatchback is not a conventional sedan, so that result is excluded from the compact-sedan lead.
Compact sedans: Honda Civic leads
Honda Civic sedan
iSeeCars lists the Civic sedan at 75.5% five-year resale value. Its broader Civic sedan/hatchback category recorded 22.9% average five-year depreciation in iSeeCars’ 2026 study. That depreciation figure is not the exact inverse of the sedan-only ranking percentage: the category scope and reported statistic differ.

Other compact-car evidence
Kelley Blue Book named the Honda Civic its 2026 compact-car Best Resale Value award winner. That supports the Civic as a strong compact choice, but KBB’s award release does not give a Civic-specific retention percentage. It is a projection for 2026 model-year vehicles, not a measurement of five-year-old Civic sale prices.
Midsize sedans: Toyota Camry edges the Honda Accord
Toyota Camry
At 68.5%, the Camry is iSeeCars’ midsize leader for five-year resale value. KBB also named it the 2026 midsize-car award winner, based on projected future residual value rather than observed prices for five-year-old cars.

Honda Accord
The Accord follows at 68.1%, only 0.4 percentage points behind the Camry in the iSeeCars midsize ranking. iSeeCars’ separate segment table reports 30.5% average five-year depreciation for the Accord. That is a category-level depreciation result, not a personalized estimate for a particular car.
How to interpret the percentages
iSeeCars’ 2026 study analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold from March 2025 through February 2026. It compared new-vehicle MSRP with equivalent five-year-old used prices and adjusted value-retention scoring for inflation using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Across the study, average five-year vehicle depreciation was 41.8%, an improvement of 3.8 percentage points compared with 2025.

Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 Best Resale Value awards answer a different question. They are projections for 2026 model-year vehicles drawn from its Official Residual Value Guide. KBB describes the assumed vehicle as average-condition with 75,000 miles after five years of lease or ownership; its analysts review statistical models built on millions of transactions. The award release names winners but does not provide the individual sedan winners’ retention percentages.
For context, KBB says the average 2026 model-year vehicle is expected to retain about 45% of its value after five years, while vehicles in its 2026 Best Resale Value Top 10 are projected to retain around 55% or more of MSRP. Those are broad KBB figures, not Civic- or Camry-specific estimates.

iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer said the recent reduction in five-year depreciation rates “suggests rising used car demand and/or insufficient supply over the past 12 months.” That is an interpretation of market conditions, not a proven explanation for any one model’s resale performance. Supply and demand, along with current and projected market conditions, can affect resale values.

A retention percentage does not tell you how many dollars you will lose. The result depends on the purchase price, including any discount from MSRP, as well as the car’s age, mileage, condition and local market when you sell. The published results compare market values or use stated projection assumptions; neither is an appraisal of your specific vehicle.

- Compare within a class: The Civic’s compact result and Camry’s midsize result answer different shopping questions.
- Check body style: A Civic hatchback or a coupe listed in a broader category should not be described as a sedan.
- Consider the whole purchase: Resale value alone does not establish the best car for your budget, safety needs, reliability priorities or daily use. iSeeCars treats reliability, value retention and safety as separate elements of its overall scoring.
