Its light-duty 1500 run is generally described as 1994–2001, while the 2500 and 3500 retained the older body into 2002. That overlap explains why “second-gen Ram” and “second-gen Cummins” do not always mean the same thing: the latter usually refers to a 1994–2002 Ram equipped with the 5.9-liter Cummins diesel.
What years are considered second-generation Dodge Rams?
The redesign began with model year 1994. For the light-duty Ram 1500, a useful general range is 1994–2001. The 2500 and 3500 heavy-duty models continued with the older body after the redesigned 1500 arrived, so broader descriptions of the generation include 2002. MotorTrend uses “2nd-gen Cummins” more specifically for 1994–2002 Dodge Ram pickups with the 5.9-liter Cummins diesel.
When comparing vehicles or ordering parts, identify the series and model year rather than relying on the generation label alone. A 2002 heavy-duty Ram can fit the second-generation description even though the light-duty 1500 had moved on.
Which models and configurations were offered?
The range included Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 pickups. Depending on series and model year, buyers could find regular-cab or Club Cab models, short or long cargo boxes, and two- or four-wheel drive. The 3500 was also offered with dual rear wheels. Those choices were not all available in every combination or every year.

For a specific truck, compare the actual series, cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, and transmission. The available information does not establish a complete year-by-year trim or equipment chart, so do not assume a feature or combination from another model year applies.
What engines did second-generation Rams have?
The lineup included gasoline engines as well as the 5.9-liter Cummins turbo-diesel inline-six. Cummins says its partnership with Ram began in 1989. Its company history notes that Ram Cummins output exceeded 200 horsepower in a 1996 milestone and surpassed 500 lb-ft of torque in a 2001 milestone. These are manufacturer-published milestones, not a full specification sheet for every engine, truck, or configuration.

How do the 12-valve and 24-valve Cummins differ?
The key change came during 1998: the 5.9-liter Cummins moved from a 12-valve engine to the 24-valve ISB version. The transition is commonly called “1998.5,” because trucks built during the 1998 model year may fall on either side of it. A model-year badge alone may not tell you which engine is installed.

If the valve configuration matters to a purchase or repair, check the truck’s build date and confirm the engine itself. “Second-gen Cummins” is shorthand for the diesel-equipped Ram, not a label for every second-generation Ram pickup.
What should you check before buying one?
Use known trouble areas as inspection prompts, not as proof that every truck has a defect. A technical guide lists different concerns for earlier trucks and 1998.5–2002 models; condition, maintenance, configuration, and age all matter.

1998.5–2002 Cummins trucks
- Ask about fuel transfer pump and fuel injection pump history, and have the systems checked if their condition is uncertain.
- On six-speed trucks, assess clutch condition; the guide flags weak clutch concerns.
- On some 4×4 models, inspect front suspension bushings for wear.
1994–1998.5 trucks
- Inspect fuel return lines for age-related degradation.
- Look for transmission fluid-loss points.
- On 4×4 models, check front-end components for wear.
These items are not failure-rate data or universal defects. A vehicle-specific inspection is more useful than treating a year range as a guarantee of a problem or of trouble-free ownership.

For trucks, compare the model year and build date, series (1500, 2500, or 3500), engine, transmission, cab, bed, and two- or four-wheel drive. For a Cummins, verify whether it has the 12-valve or 24-valve engine instead of inferring it from the listing’s model year.

For replacement parts such as a fuel transfer pump for an applicable 1998.5–2002 Cummins Ram, confirm fitment by VIN, engine, and configuration. A part’s broad year listing is not enough to establish that it fits every truck in that range.
