Sebastian Wheldon will race for TRIDENT in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship, the series announced on October 9, 2026. He joins the grid after finishing second in the 2026 Formula Regional European Championship.
What Wheldon’s TRIDENT signing confirms
The FIA Formula 3 announcement confirms Wheldon’s seat with TRIDENT for the 2027 championship. It does not name a complete driver lineup for the team, so the announcement should not be read as confirmation of TRIDENT’s other seats.

Wheldon said he was “very happy” to compete with the team and acknowledged the pressure of racing for a successful F3 outfit. He said he would focus on learning quickly and delivering good results, and thanked TWG Motorsports and Andretti Global for their support. TRIDENT Team Manager Giacomo Ricci also confirmed the agreement.

Wheldon’s career has progressed through several levels of single-seater racing. The FIA’s signing announcement records the following results:

- 2025: Took seven wins across F4 Middle East, E4 and Italian F4. In Italian F4, he finished third overall, with six wins, three poles and nine podiums.
- 2026: Finished second in the Formula Regional European Championship.
The 2026 runner-up finish is the most recent result cited in the signing announcement and the immediate marker of his progress into F3.
What the 2027 F3 calendar means for a rookie
The FIA’s 2027 calendar has ten rounds. It opens in Sakhir on March 12–14 and concludes at Istanbul Park on October 1–3. The series is scheduled to visit Jeddah, Montreal and Istanbul for the first time; Montreal will be F3’s first appearance in North America.

For Wheldon, the calendar combines familiar championship venues with new stops for the series. Those additions broaden the range of circuits and event settings across the season, but the calendar alone does not establish a particular competitive advantage for him or TRIDENT.
TRIDENT’s place on the grid
TRIDENT is one of ten teams selected by the FIA for the 2025–2027 F3 seasons. The selection notice allocates three cars to each team, for a 30-car field. That team-cycle selection establishes TRIDENT’s participation in the championship, but it is separate from driver announcements and does not settle the team’s full 2027 lineup.
