Those are his concerns—not proven consequences: the reports on the announcement provide no injury-rate data or measured estimate of its effect on career length.
What MotoGP plans to change in 2027
The format announced on 7 October 2026 adds a Friday sprint qualifying session that will set the sprint grid. Saturday qualifying will instead determine the Grand Prix grid. Reports describe all 22 riders starting in Q1, with the fastest 12 advancing to Q2. The Sunday warm-up is removed and replaced by a 10-minute window for installation laps before the race. Crash.net’s report and AS’s announcement coverage describe the changes.

The reported session outline includes Friday free practices of 45 and 30 minutes, followed by 15-minute sprint qualifying. Saturday has a 20-minute free practice, 15-minute Q1 and Q2, then the sprint. Since sprint races began in 2023, one qualifying session had set the grids for both the sprint and Grand Prix, according to Crash.net.
Why Acosta objects to the extra qualifying session
Acosta’s concern is not simply that the schedule contains another timed session. He argues that riders already face pressure to push during a weekend that includes a sprint, and that another qualifying session creates another high-stakes opportunity for a crash. Speaking in Mandalika, he said: “We are risking a lot already. We are not racing cars. When we crash, even if it’s a small one, it’s our body that touches the ground and not the cockpit.” Visordown quoted Acosta on 8 October 2026.
#1 Best Overall
He described a race weekend as beginning as early as Wednesday because of pre-event commitments, and called the proposed format a potentially “really tough year.” He also questioned how a 15-minute qualifying session would work with all 22 riders on track. His statement that it was “impossible” to push at 100 percent repeatedly without getting injured is his assessment, not an injury statistic or measured forecast.
Why the Sunday warm-up matters to him
Acosta also questioned removing Sunday warm-up. He said it can be useful if a rider crashes on Saturday and needs to check the bike before the Grand Prix. The replacement installation-lap window is shorter and serves a different purpose; the reports describe the change but do not establish how teams will handle every post-crash repair or check under the new schedule.

What Acosta means by shorter careers
Acosta’s warning about riders’ careers predates the 2027 announcement. In April 2026, he told Motorsport.com that the current calendar could make careers shorter, arguing that sustained exposure to risk makes serious injury more likely. Those earlier comments indicate his concern is about the wider workload and calendar, not only the additional Friday session. Motorsport.com reported those remarks on 13 April 2026.
There is no independently verified injury-rate figure, named statistical study, or quantified estimate of how the 2027 format might affect career length in the reports covering the announcement. Acosta is describing a risk he believes riders face; that is not evidence that the schedule will cause a particular number of injuries or years lost.

Other riders do not share one view
Riders have expressed different views on the extra qualifying, the sprint schedule, Sunday warm-up, and how the decision was made. Motorsport.com reported that Francesco Bagnaia welcomed the extra qualifying as an improvement but wanted Sunday warm-up retained. Luca Marini saw potential in the changes for promoting the championship. Alex Marquez criticized the decision process and raised concern about added risk. These are individual reactions, not a consensus among riders. Motorsport.com covered the differing responses on 8 October 2026.
Acosta’s alternative: fewer sprint races
Acosta said he would understand the format better if MotoGP held roughly half as many sprints: 11 rather than 22. He has also argued that some circuits produce better sprint racing than others. His proposal addresses how often riders face sprint weekends, rather than the details of how qualifying grids are set.
