Scout Motors says its upcoming Traveler SUV and Terra pickup take inspiration from the original International Harvester Scout vehicles, built from 1961 to 1980. That heritage is the company’s stated design rationale; a resemblance to Rivian, if you see one, does not prove either company copied the other. Scout has not published a detailed side-by-side comparison that settles the visual claim.
What Scout has announced
The two planned vehicles are the Traveler, a full-size SUV, and the Terra, a full-size pickup. Scout says both are planned with seating for five or six and a choice between a battery-electric powertrain and a gasoline range-extender system it calls Harvester. These are announced plans, not final customer specifications. Scout’s model information describes the vehicles and their planned configurations.
Scout says both models will use body-on-frame construction, but notes that final details will be confirmed closer to production. That establishes the architecture Scout has announced; it does not, by itself, make the vehicles technically equivalent to a Rivian. Scout’s help center says specifications remain subject to confirmation.
Why the design points back to International Harvester
Scout’s October 2024 reveal says the Traveler and Terra draw on the design and utility of International Harvester Scouts made from 1961 through 1980. The company’s stated aim is to bring that rugged, versatile vehicle idea into new models. Scout Motors president and CEO Scott Keogh put it this way: “The original core idea — rugged, versatile vehicles capable of off-road adventure and family duty — is more relevant than ever.” (Scout Motors’ October 24, 2024 reveal release.)

That is evidence of Scout’s declared heritage inspiration, not proof that every visible feature comes from a particular older Scout or that the new vehicles have no visual overlap with Rivian. Without a detailed, reliable comparison, “looks like a Rivian” remains an impression rather than an established account of design lineage.
What is known about timing and reservations
In a March 2026 update, Scout targeted initial production in 2027 and customer deliveries in 2028. It said Traveler would be the first model to enter production, but did not state how much later Terra would follow. Scout also said it planned to begin with the Harvester range-extender configuration. These are company targets, not confirmed delivery dates. (Scout Motors’ March 2026 update.)

In that same March 2026 update, Scout said more than 85% of reservations were for Harvester. Separately, it reported that nearly 75% were for Traveler. Those percentages describe different reservation choices—powertrain and model—and should not be added together or read as a measure of completed sales.
Capability figures are projections, not ratings
At the October 2024 reveal, Scout described concept-level towing targets of more than 10,000 pounds for Terra and more than 7,000 pounds for Traveler. They are projections from the reveal, not verified ratings for production vehicles. Scout’s help center says final details will be shared closer to production, so buyers should wait for final specifications before relying on those numbers for a purchase or towing plan. How to read the Rivian comparison
A useful comparison separates appearance from facts about the vehicles. Scout’s announced models are a full-size SUV and pickup with a stated International Harvester heritage, planned electric and range-extender options, and body-on-frame construction. The available Scout statements do not provide a detailed design comparison with Rivian or establish copying in either direction. Until final production specifications and a substantive comparison are available, treat the resemblance claim as subjective and Scout’s heritage explanation as the company’s own stated rationale.
