Schwinn revived the Hurricane name in 2024 with a compact electric bike inspired by its 1978 model. Its current listings show 14-inch and 20-inch versions, but the specifications announced at launch do not match those now published for the 20-inch bike. Check the size and date attached to any price, speed or range claim before comparing models.
What is the Schwinn Hurricane?
The Hurricane is Schwinn’s retro-inspired compact e-bike. In its October 30, 2024 launch announcement, Schwinn said the design took inspiration from the original 1978 Hurricane. Lisa VanderMause, Schwinn’s VP of Marketing, said: “Taking nods from our Hurricane model from the 70s, this new, electric version really speaks to our brand direction and provides consumers with an elevated and modern riding experience.” Schwinn’s launch announcement described the new bike as youth-focused.
The current Schwinn compact e-bike collection lists two Hurricane sizes: 14 inches and 20 inches. Its age-group filters include both kids and adults, but the sources reviewed do not establish separate current age guidance for each size. Wheel size alone is not enough to determine whether a particular rider fits; check Schwinn’s current size guidance and the listing for the exact variant.

The 40-mile figure is not a guaranteed distance in every riding mode or condition. Schwinn says fully electric throttle range may be lower, and that range and top speed vary with rider height and weight and conditions including hills and wind. The page also lists 20 x 4.0-inch tires, a steel frame, a 20-inch fork, mechanical disc brakes with 180 mm rotors, and front and rear lights.
The current 20-inch listing says the bike is SGS certified to ANSI/CAN/UL2849 and links battery safety information. Certification is not a guarantee against injury or a substitute for checking whether the bike and its use are appropriate for a rider.

Why do the specifications differ from the 2024 launch?
Schwinn’s October 2024 announcement described the then-introduced Hurricane with a 250 W motor, throttle speed up to 17.5 mph, and range up to 30 miles. It also listed 3-inch tires, mechanical disc brakes, automatic front and rear LEDs, a chainguard and fenders. Those are dated launch claims, not the specifications for the current 20-inch product page.
Schwinn’s launch release said the initial bike was for riders aged 13 and up and gave a suggested retail price of $599. It named Schwinnbikes.com, DICK’S Sporting Goods and Target as sales channels at launch. That historical price and channel information does not establish today’s price, stock or current age guidance.

New Atlas’s November 1, 2024 report on the launch model described it as a 14-inch-wheel bike weighing 56 lb, with a 260 lb capacity and a 280.8 Wh battery, and reported UL 2849 certification. These are secondary, launch-era details; the current 20-inch Schwinn page instead states SGS certification to ANSI/CAN/UL2849. See New Atlas’s report for its account of the original release.

The compact format and youth-focused launch make the Hurricane relevant to families looking at a smaller e-bike, but the available information does not establish that either current size fits a particular child or adult. Before choosing a model, check the manufacturer’s current fit guidance, the rider’s ability to handle the bike, and the exact variant’s specifications. Schwinn’s launch announcement advises riders to wear a helmet and stay aware of their surroundings.

Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Confirm whether the live listing is for the 14-inch or 20-inch Hurricane; the detailed current performance figures above apply to the 20-inch model only.
- Check the current price, stock, fit guidance and specification list on the exact product listing.
- For the 20-inch model, treat 40 miles as Schwinn’s pedal-assist maximum claim; throttle use and riding conditions can reduce range.
- Verify local rules and rider suitability rather than treating the 2024 launch’s age guidance as current, size-specific advice.
