Some drivers have already reported commercial offers appearing on their vehicle’s infotainment screens, but the evidence does not show that ads are standard across new cars. Automakers should keep promotions out of driving-critical interfaces, make marketing consent separate from essential vehicle services, and give owners a clear, lasting way to refuse.
In-car ads are a real concern, but not yet a universal feature
In February 2025, GoAuto reported complaints from owners of some Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles about recurring Mopar extended-warranty pop-ups. The report said some Jeep owners encountered offers when their vehicles stopped, interrupting access to navigation and other functions. Stellantis attributed the messages to a SiriusXM contract and said it was working to reduce their frequency.
That is evidence of reported promotions in some vehicles, not a measured estimate of how many vehicles display ads or confirmation that the same messages still appear in every affected model. It also illustrates why timing matters: an offer that blocks a screen used for navigation or vehicle controls is more than an annoyance.
Commercial offers are not the same as safety or vehicle notices
A driver should be able to tell why a message appeared and what action it requires. A paid warranty offer or sponsored recommendation is commercial marketing. A recall notice, urgent safety warning, maintenance alert, or software update message serves a different purpose and may need to reach the driver even when marketing is disabled.

That distinction should be reflected in vehicle settings and consent screens. Refusing promotions should not mean missing a safety warning; accepting essential vehicle communications should not silently enroll an owner in advertising. If a message’s purpose is unclear, consult the owner’s manual or contact the automaker rather than assuming every pop-up is an ad.

What automakers are considering—and what they have actually launched
In September 2024, Edmunds reported on a Ford patent application describing possible targeted in-car advertising that could draw on information such as a route, destination, speed, traffic, travel history, or cabin audio. A patent records a proposed idea; it does not establish that the system is available or planned for production. Ford’s spokesperson told Edmunds: “The ideas described within a patent application should not be viewed as an indication of our business or product plans.”
In June 2026, Sherwood News described marketing formats promoted by 4screen, including sponsored searches, branded location pins, and pop-up recommendations, as well as more utility-oriented placements such as charging and maintenance suggestions. The commercial benefits in that coverage are company claims and attributed views, not independent proof that these formats improve the driving experience. Whether an offer is useful does not remove the need for clear consent or a non-disruptive interface.
Connected-car privacy makes meaningful consent important
Advertising and data collection are related concerns, but they are not identical: the presence of an ad does not by itself prove that personal vehicle data was used, and not every automaker sells driver data. The Federal Trade Commission says connected cars can collect sensitive information, including precise location and biometric data, and warns that collection, use, or disclosure can threaten privacy and financial welfare. If a promotion is targeted using trip or behavior data, consumers need to know what is collected, why it is used, and how to refuse.

A concrete example of regulatory action is the FTC’s January 2026 final order settling allegations involving GM and OnStar. The agency said the order addresses collection, use, and sale of precise geolocation and driving-behavior data without adequate notice and affirmative consent. For 20 years, it requires affirmative express consent for covered data collection, use, or sharing, subject to exceptions; provides U.S. consumers a way to access and seek deletion of data; requires disabling precise-geolocation collection where the vehicle has the necessary technology; and provides an opt-out for geolocation and driving-behavior collection, subject to exceptions. The order also bars certain disclosures to consumer reporting agencies for five years. These requirements apply to GM/OnStar under that order; they are not a nationwide ban on in-car advertising or a universal rule for automakers.
Earlier context should be read as historical, not as a current industry count. In a 2017 review of selected automakers, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 of 16 reported offering connected vehicles and collecting, using, and sharing some vehicle data. GAO said the written notices it reviewed were not clearly written and consumer options were limited. Those findings describe the selected sample and practices at that time.

Consumer Watchdog, an advocacy organization, argues that connected-car data practices warrant stronger protections. Its report author Justin Kloczko said, “Consumers should have the right to say no to being tracked in their cars,” in the organization’s March 30, 2022 announcement. That is an advocacy position, not a statement of law or regulator guidance.
How to assess a message or decide what to do
- Identify its purpose. Is it a paid offer, a sponsored recommendation, a recall or safety notice, a service alert, or a software message?
- Notice when it appears. Does it show only while parked, or interrupt navigation and controls when the vehicle is in use?
- Ask what data supports it. Check the privacy notice for collection and use of location, travel, or behavior data, and whether marketing consent can be declined or withdrawn separately.
- Look for controls. Check the vehicle’s manual, infotainment settings, connected-service account, or automaker support for dismissal, opt-out, access, and deletion options. Exact menu paths vary by make, model, and year.
- Escalate a disruptive promotion. Record the message and when it appeared, then contact the dealer or automaker and ask how to disable marketing without suppressing safety or recall communications.
Some Jeep owners reportedly explored replacing the factory infotainment unit as a workaround, according to GoAuto’s report. That is not a general-purpose ad blocker or a guaranteed fix. Before replacing a head unit, verify vehicle-specific fitment, installation requirements, retained factory features, and warranty implications with a qualified installer.

What drivers should ask automakers to guarantee
Drivers and prospective buyers can ask dealers and automakers for a plain-language answer on whether the vehicle displays paid promotions, how to turn them off, and what data—if any—is used to target them. Those disclosures should be available before purchase, not buried in settings after delivery.
- Keep marketing consent separate from safety, recall, and emergency communications.
- Provide a persistent, easy-to-find opt-out and honor consent withdrawal.
- Do not place promotions where they interrupt controls needed while driving.
- Explain data collection and provide access, deletion, and opt-out controls where applicable.
These are consumer-protection recommendations, not a claim that every jurisdiction already requires those exact measures. The standard is straightforward: a vehicle should serve its driver first, and commercial messaging should be transparent, optional, and kept out of the way.
