The data and images point to a real inventory buildup at the time, but they do not prove that every visible car was unsold—or describe Tesla’s inventory today.
What Tesla’s Q1 2024 numbers show
Tesla reported producing 433,371 vehicles and delivering 386,810 in Q1 2024, a gap of 46,561. That is a quarterly difference between vehicles built and vehicles delivered, not a count of cars sitting in parking lots. Sherwood News described it as Tesla’s largest such imbalance to that point and more than twice the year-earlier gap. Tesla’s Q1 2024 update also reported deliveries were down 9% year over year.
Production and deliveries are not the same as inventory
Tesla separately reported 28 days of global vehicle inventory at the end of Q1 2024, compared with 15 days in Q1 2023. The company calculates inventory days by dividing ending new-vehicle inventory by deliveries for the relevant quarter, using 75 trading days. This is an ending-stock measure; it should not be confused with the 46,561 production-delivery gap, which compares two quarterly flows.
What the satellite images showed
In a June 6, 2024 report, Sherwood News compared selected SkyFi satellite images of Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas from October 2023 and March 2024. The parking areas shown appeared fuller in March. A former production lead who had recently been laid off told Sherwood that the lots in question held finished Tesla vehicles awaiting shipment. That description is attributed to the source, not independently established for every car in the images.

Sherwood also reported a separate SkyFi image-based count of 465 Teslas at Chesterfield Mall, outside St. Louis, in May 2024. The report said Tesla had been storing excess inventory at that site. The count applies to that location and date; it is not a companywide inventory total.
What the images cannot establish
A satellite image is a snapshot of a place, not a vehicle-status record. Sherwood noted that some cars in the photographed lots could have been en route to owners. It also could not determine whether additional vehicles were in nearby lots used primarily by employees and contractors. The report did not provide VIN-level status or a full accounting reconciling each photographed car with Tesla’s reported inventory.

- The images support the observation that selected parking areas looked fuller in March 2024 than in October 2023.
- Tesla’s quarterly figures independently show production exceeded deliveries in Q1 2024.
- Neither source proves that every visible vehicle was unsold, or that the photographed lots contained only finished inventory.
Sherwood said Tesla did not respond to its questions about the imagery or requests for comment. The reporter’s explanation of the Texas lots came from the unnamed former production lead, so it should be understood with that attribution.
Why Tesla said inventory mattered financially
Tesla reported negative free cash flow of $2.5 billion for Q1 2024 and identified an inventory increase of $2.7 billion among the drivers of the sequential cash decrease. Discussing the cash-flow result, Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja told Sherwood: “The primary driver of this was an increase in inventory from a mismatch between builds,” adding that “We expect the inventory built to reverse in the second quarter and free cash flow to return to positive again.” He also cited spending on AI compute. That was a forecast made at the time, not evidence that the expected reversal occurred.

How to read the headline today
The report documented a specific episode in 2024: a production-delivery imbalance, a higher inventory-days figure than a year earlier, and fuller-looking lots at selected locations. Those facts make “unsold car problem” a reasonable description of the period’s inventory pressure, but the satellite evidence is illustrative rather than a complete measure of unsold vehicles. It cannot establish Tesla’s current stock levels or demand; the figures and imagery here are historical.
